Constructing Roofs
« on: September 11, 2014, 10:01:11 AM »
Let me put this out there, I have always and likely always be an absolutely horrible builder! I know auto-roof button in the sims 3 was my best friend, even if it still gave out some wonky things. But they were better then what I came up with!

It seems to me constructing roofs now is harder. It could just be still trying to get used to the sims 4 building mechanics. Is anybody with me on this? Or am I just going insane?

I have found some of the building mechanics to be challenging but most of that is learning a new way of doing things and getting my head around building 'rooms' for everything.  I haven't found roofs to be too much of a problem so far.  Basically, click to style of roof you want and put it down (rotate first if necessary) and then click and drag the arrows to the correct dimension.

The only issue I've had with roofs so far is trying to get one to fit an octagonal room.  Other than that, I think they've been much easier to place (manually) than in TS3.  I do agree that the auto roof was a lifesaver most of the time.

Learning to build roofs and prettier houses changed the game for me, definitely recommend it. What taught me was Carl's guide, actually! Surely, Sims 4 is a bit different, but most of the "rules" still apply. Link here.

Yeah, no roofs for octoganol shapes, unfortunately.  I'm making use of the flat roof with fence used give it a more finished look.

I'm having trouble getting roofs on upstairs balconies. I can drag a normal pointy/pitched roof across them but I want a flat roof. I managed to do it by accident by sort-of clicking just inside the balcony at the top of a pillar and a pop-up message asked my if I wanted to place a roof, so I clicked yes, and an auto placed flat roof appeared. But I can't make that happen again.

Does anyone know how to place a flat roof on an upstairs balcony?

Have you tried the tool for decks? That might work.
Have you read the Forum Rules?

lol, no I haven't. Seems obvious thought! I'll try that when I fire up my game tomorrow. Husband has commandeered the pc tonight as he hasn't had a chance to use it since TS4 came out!  :) I've been relegated to the mac!

Put columns where you want the roof to end, then delete them after the roof is in place.

Thank you guys! I could not figure out how to get a roof on top of my balcony... but I guess using columns was pretty obvious.  ::)

I've got columns all along the upstairs balcony and I still can't place a flat foof over it. All I can do is drag an, 'A' shaped roof (forget it's real name) over it.  :'(

Select the balcony 'room'.  You should see the arrows for dragging the walls, etc.  Hover your mouse near the top of one of the walls and you should see a yellow ring come up all around the edge of your room.  Click and Add Ceiling.

Oh, thank you Dellena, I had managed to do this once by accident but I couldn't remember where or how. I'll be making a flat roof first thing tomorrow when I fire up my game.  :D <skips with joy>

You can do the same with a floor that you're removed and want to replace.  Hovering near the floor edge gives the same yellow glow to click on to add floor.  We're all learning. :)
