Ghost Hunter: Can't Scan for Spirits in China!

My master ghost hunter has the gizmo in her inventory that shows her where the spirits are hiding. It works for her in China too, but when I click on the ground, there is no option to Scan for Spirits.

Has anyone succeeded at collecting spirits while traveling?

I'd hazard a guess and say because it's work-related, it can't be done in a vacation town.

It's strange that hidden spirits would be identified with the spirit collecting gizmo if they weren't collectible.

That makes sense to me.  The tool still works, but you're on vacation so you can't actually do the work.

There's a game hint at the loading screen saying you can hunt spirits on vacation. One more thing they started but didn't finish, I guess.

Can you do it in Egypt or France?

I can't say that I've checked this particular problem, but since work-related stuff are blocked on vacations, I'd imagine it won't work in France or Egypt either.
