Save vs Save As
« on: September 07, 2014, 03:31:37 AM »
With my game crashing so regularly I'm saving frequently.  Wondering if Save As would be better and if so where would you find that kind of save?  In Sims3 when you Save As you rename your save so you can quickly find it in your files but the only time I did Save As I couldn't find that file.

I am using Save As on sims 4.

Got 3 files on the go atm. When I load the game back up, it just seems to pick whatever the latest save game is... I can't seem to find a "load" function.

EDIT: Got it!

On the first screen, with the play button on the bottom right, the white background and sims doing animations, go to the top. Second icon in, next to "Open Gallery" says "Load".

You can pick which saved game to load from there. :D

I have been using "save as" in sims 4 as it doesn't show up in "My Library" as lots of the same game  that way.

I am also using save as. I think it feels safer. I am rotating between 5 different saves, just renaming the oldest of the 5 when it's time to save again.

I guess I wasn't clear.  My point is when you go into your files, (my route is computer/documents/EAgames/Sims4), there is no place that has the files you named/labeled with your Save As.  Also, all the save files have the exact same date and time frame and I know I didn't save multiple times in the same minute.  What I want to do is remove the oldest version of the same game leaving only the last save to play.  In Sims3 my route is the same except I choose Sims3.  Then I can go to my Saves folder and remove the backup or any game I'm playing.  This makes it easy to move or remove multiple games

For instance,  I am playing in Union Cove so I have a Union Cove file.  Then I decide to remodel it so I "Save As Union Cove remodel".  In my saves folder I will find a file both for Union Cove, the original game, with its backup, AND a file named Union Cove remodel with its back up.  For purposes of challenges I want a pure Union Cove so I keep that in a separate place on my desktop.  When I go into my game, after having moved the one file, the only file that will show up as being played will be the one I did not move.  In Sims4 when you go into your Save file folder you get multiple save files but they are simply listed as version0 to whatever the last number they used is.  No way to know which file these are.  So if I play with SimA I'll have a bunch of "version" saves and when I play with SimB, different game, I'll have more "version" saves but no way to tell which game is which and which one of those files would be the one to keep.

Firstly, if you want a fresh game, click the + sign on the first screen that loads up. That will give you a new copy of the base game. Secondly, you can manage all your saved game files from the Load Game Menu. You can rename them and delete them right from that menu. No need to go into the folder and mess around with the files.

When we get new worlds added in, I think you will just be able to save those to your library in the Gallery, so if you mess about and edit one version, you'll have a fresh version always available to you.

I'm also using 'save as'. I just keep saving over the same file and I delete the auto saves in game when I start the game up each day.

I know exactly what your saying and I agree with you. It's very frustrating as I want to keep the saves file empty apart from the actual game I'm playing. I'm still totally confused as to what all those files are so I hope a techy person will be able to offer some advice.  :)

Yes, I have found it difficult to know what file relates to which game as they have the same date.  I deleted what I thought was the correct ones and when I went back into game, nothing showed up !.

I'm still confused as to why you need to go into the folder to mess around with your save files, when you can delete/manage/rename them from the Load Game menu.

Just make a copy of the whole Saves folder for backups.

Ok, yes I know I can delete/manage/rename them from Load Game.  But there are a TON more generic saves in my main Sims4 folder although I only have two save as files in Load Game area.  I don't know if these relate to the Load Game save as files or not.  I have trouble with my pc crashing the game so I thought removing unnecessary save files MIGHT help, rather like cleaning up your files by removing the different cache files in Sims 3.

Hi Joria,   I agree exactly with your comments.  Also I find I have more than one of the same Sim in My "Library" when I open my game and only want the "up to date" one to show (e.g. latest skills, inv, relationships, etc) so I can use this one to put in a game if I want to change house / area, etc.  I deleted one of them (thinking it was the first one and not the one that had accumulated skills, etc) and when I brought the sim left in My Library she had no skills, inv, relationships, etc.

Owch!  I just did that earlier today since I had four copies of the same Sim.  Sure hope I kept the correct one.

Morning Joria, hope you did !      Let me know and I will try to "clean up" My Library as I have two of the same sim at the moment and just want the latest one with all the skills, etc so I can re-use her in a different game later ☼

Ok, I THINK I've got most of this figured out.  As soon as you go into your game the game sets up a series of "save" files with the date and time.  These will be, in your EA file folder, from 0 to 4 or 5.  There really isn't anything apparent in there because if you remove every other save file from that folder, except that top bunch, and go into your game you won't be able to load a game.  It isn't there.

What I did was this.  Yesterday I removed all my save files from earlier date/time stamp except the most recent.  Out of three games this left me with two games.  I couldn't tell in the files which ones were which until today.  I only played one family yesterday so that one had the latest date/time stamp.  I removed all other files and went into game and my one family I'd been playing was there ready to be loaded with no other "save as" files showing.  I left the game and removed all but the top few, newest, time files and then went back into game.  My games were all missing and I could not "load game".  My next step will be to put my game back in but remove the earliest time of that game to see if my game will be able to be loaded and played from where I left off.

Every time you save, or save as, a new file is created in your EA file folder so this can get pretty long and full.  Eventually it MIGHT slow your game down.  So if we know we can remove the earliest parts of a file and be able to continue to play that particular game it should save space and hopefully keep your game from slowing down.  Now, I'm totally a non-tech person, so I could be way off base here, but that's what my fooling around has led me to believe.

If you look at the extended line of your files to where it shows how big it is, you will see they get bigger and bigger as you do or add more and more.  Every time you save you are adding a new file instead of it just enlarging the original file.  What I don't know for sure is, is it adding all that information over and over, like repeated back up files.  So I removed all but two files for one of my games, one I didn't care if I lost, and went back into game and voila, the game was still there.  So I deleted those removed files.  I then cut the two files I'd left in and moved them to a folder with the name of the "saved as" game.  Again, went back into game and lo and behold the game was gone. When I replaced those two files again, the game was back but with only two files instead of six.  So now I have separate file folders on my desktop for all my various games and "think" I know how to keep the amount of files in the EA folder down to a minimum.

I'm hoping a tech savvy person can figure this out, see if I did it right, and maybe explain it all more clearly.
