I think you need a computer, and to be high enough level in the music skill.

Answer: you must meet level 8 of an instrument skill to be able to write, scrap, and name songs!!! 😊

I have trouble cancelling out the write song actions, be forewarned... they seem to continue for hours after I X it in the queue.

Also if you do cancel one, it becomes sheet music in your inventory that you need to click to continue it... I started three songs before I ever noticed that and the counter for aspiration is a bit wonky, it seemed to not count my songs until I started another.

I found a trick to cancel out writing song.  After you cross out the song writing in your queue, use your mouse and click somewhere on the floor asking your sim to go there, and that seems to cancel their song writing.  I was late to work because of that, panicking hence random clicking my sim everywhere and voila it work.

Do Perfectionist or Creative Visionary affect the quality of the song written and the royalties?

Or are songs not like regular "crafted" items?

One of my Sims almost died because he wouldn't stop songwriting even after cancelling the action.  I didn't try a move command though, I instead saved game, exited to the main menu and then reloaded and he was free of the action.  So yeah, definitely keep track of your sims while they're songwriting, they won't stop for low needs!

There's a bug with the Write Song for some.  I have it on my sim with her violin.  She won't stop even when I cancel the action.  Here's how I fix it.

Cancel the Write Song action
Queue Practice on a Guitar (I believe it needs to be an instrument they have to pick up which makes them put down the one they have)
Then I cancel the Practice action in the queue.

I had it work by doing a play or practice action on the same instrument when my musician was playing the piano, haven't tried with the others.

I ran into all of the issues mentioned here and got them worked out, so thank you for sharing your information everyone.  My current problem is that my Sim can't seem to finish a song.  He's got sheet music for two songs in his inventory and I have him resume writing one of them and he just never stops.  Has anyone actually successfully finished a song?  How long does it take?

Edit:  My Sim finished his first song about five minutes after I posted this.  Naturally.  The answer to the question about how long it takes to write a song is "awhile".  :D

I've finished about 6 or 7 songs with my musical sim. It takes ages. I haven't times it exactly but I make sure she has all needs maxed out before starting. I have found that if you try to cancel writing a song, the action continues for sims hours but at the end there is no new song! So now I just let the action go on. I estimate that it takes about 10+ sim hours, probably even longer. By the time she has finished writing a song, her needs are in the red mostly so I have to potty and feed pronto!
I have noticed that now she has maxed out piano the songs get written a tiny bit quicker.

A few times I have managed to quit the action and there was a half finished song in her inventory, it still took hours to complete these songs, probably about 7+ hours.

Hope that helps.  :)
