A Webber Somewhat (Not Really) Legacy Chapter 2; Sunset Valley
« on: September 05, 2014, 11:20:47 PM »
*Note: I am determined to get a good story out there without having such terrible computer issues! And the reason I chose to do this "Legacy" here is because it doesn't follow the rules of the Legacy Challenge due to story progression mods and the way I am choosing to play the game. I also want to make the story as interactive as I can (not quite sure how yet). Thanks for giving my story a read!

This is Alice Webber. Alice has always been talented. She lived off her talent since the day she left home. She didn't have a troubled childhood, she wasn't overly spoiled, she was just Alice.

Alice earned everything she owns. Starting from rock bottom, she made a living off of her paintings. She enjoyed her beautiful town of Appaloosa Plains, though she didn't go out often. Her paintings were in high demand, and mainly left her house to go to the consignment store to sell them.

When she wasn't at the store or painting, she often felt alone. She wasn't a loner, she just was a natural lone wolf. She longed for a friend or a pet, but never found anyone.

Her routine normally consists of wake up, eat, go sell paintings, paint, eat, paint, sleep. She took her everyday taxi down to the store, just like every other day. She thought of talking to the driver, but couldn't think of anything to say, just like every other day.

When she got to the store, she noticed that the normal consignment clerk wasn't there, and that in his place was a blonde, tall man. He looked at her in awe, he must have been a new employee who enjoyed her art.

Alice asked, "Have you been here long?"

"Yeah, I've lived here since I graduated school a few years ago. Today is my first day working here, though."

The only people Alice really knew were the few constant buyers and clerks at the store. She realized that she had lived there for over 5 years and had never truly explored the town. She decided to skip her normal routine, just this once, and go look at the town.

Alice decided to head to the nearby library. She has an interest in books, but didn't have many at home. She looked around for a bit, but didn't find anything she wanted to read. She sat down near the entrance near a man who seemed to be completely entranced in whatever he was reading. He looked up and saw Alice watching him, and abruptly left. Alice was embarrassed and left just as quickly as he did.

Alice walked across to the street to the main park. Alice had been there once with her mom and dad when they were visiting her grandmother back when she was little. She saw a group of beautiful butterflies, and wanted to catch one to take home and paint. After failing a few times, she noticed a muscular man watching. It looked as if he wanted to join her in playing with the butterflies, she thought. But he just stood and watched until all the butterflies had flown away.

The butterflies at the park made her think of her mothers' butterfly tattoo on her shoulder. She went to the tattoo parlor, thinking about getting a similar tattoo. Today was a day to try new things, Alice decided. But when she got there, she chose to dance to the catchy pop music in the waiting room. Eventually others joined in, including a rich, well known playboy and another well dressed man.

It was getting later in the afternoon, so she decided to visit one more place before the day ended. Alice headed to the graveyard to see her grandmother. She never really knew her grandmother. Alice had very few memories of her, other than a few visits her family made to Appaloosa to see her. But when she saw her grave, it made her heart ache for her family. She cried and wailed and wished nothing more than to see them again.

Alice soon realized that there was someone fishing in the graveyard pond. She quickly composed herself and went to go tell him off for being so disrespectful to the dead, but he ran away before she got to him.

Alice stayed in the graveyard well into the darkness. It wasn't a full moon, so she knew it was safe. She sat there thinking about her family. Alice wished to be able to go back and change that, but she didn't even know where her family was anymore.

As she got up to leave, she noticed a weird glow coming from the intimidating reaper statue. She walked towards it, and a scary looking fairy with dark wings walked toward her from behind the statue.

"Alice."

How does he not know my name? She wondered. Maybe he had heard of her paintings.

The dark fairy approached her. Alice felt colder and colder as he came closer.

"Alice, you naïve girl."

What was he talking about?

"It really is a shame. We could've really used someone like you."

"What are you talking about?"

"Prove to the king you can commit to someone. You have exactly twenty four hours to marry a man before this condition becomes permanent. In exactly twenty four hours, your heart will stop beating. The King sends his condolences to any family members you have. Goodbye, Alice."

"Why?" Alice screamed at him with all her might. But within a few moments, the dark fairy had disappeared. Alice could feel the weight of the next twenty four hours in her shoulders.

What should she do? Who could she marry?

*Another Note: I would like to put up a vote here for what Alice should do to find a husband within 24 hours. If you would vote, please comment so I know how many people would vote. I don't want to have 5-6 options and only 4 people vote. If no one or not enough people are interested, I guess I will just decide for myself. Thanks for reading!

This is an interesting beginning.  However, I have no idea who she could marry but since she likes to paint so much, go to Art Gallery and try to meet someone who likes art.  ;)

The challenge of finding someone for Alice to marry is that she has no one she really knows well enough. If there is a poll, I plan to have a few locations as options for you guys to choose from for her to go looking for a husband. I would like to put up a poll as soon as I can, since it's the weekend and I am very busy with schooling during the week. Thank you for giving my story a read!

*Edit: I went ahead and created a poll for anyone that has already read the prologue and would like to vote. This is the first time I've ever done a poll like this, so please let me know if there is any issues. :) thanks for reading!

If the forum is against me using this site for the poll, please let me know and I will take down the link. Thank you!

This is a pretty good intro. Alice seems like an interesting founder and I'm really curious to see who she ends up marrying. Can't wait to see more!

Now, onto the story!

21 more hours, Alice thought to herself. She had only 21 hours to live, unless by some miracle her prince charming rode into town and married her today. She spent the last 3 hours getting home, crying, and eventually she composed herself.

She decided to try to finish her last painting since she couldn’t sleep. Who could, knowing they had only hours to live?

“Maybe I’ll go explore more of the town once this is done,” Alice thought to herself. “I haven’t even seen the art gallery in town. Maybe I’ll go do that.”

After completing her last painting by 7 a.m. , she went to the art gallery. She knew they had about 5 of her paintings in the gallery, but she wanted to see some other art. Dying around art didn’t sound too bad to her.

As she got to the floor with all the sculptures, she noticed the consignment clerk she met yesterday viewing what looked like a child’s dollhouse.

“Hi.”

“Alice Webber?”

“That’s my name. You work at the consignment store, right? What’s your name?”

“Don Woodward. I can’t believe you remembered me.”

Alice and Don chatted and quickly learned how much they had in common. They both loved art, though Alice enjoyed painting and Don enjoyed music. They became quick friends. What surprised Alice the most, though, was when Don flirted with her.

“If you let everyone see this side of you, Alice, you would have men banging down your door constantly. I know I’d be one of them.”
Alice didn’t know how to respond but to smile. She hadn’t dated since high school, and that relationship ended when he left for university. But Don made her feel safe and comfortable for the first time since she was cursed.

Alice’s confidence grew exponentially, and made her move, which surprised her more than it surprised Don.

“I know I’m not the most successful guy or the funniest or the most talented guy, but would you put that aside and be mine?”

“Don…. I need to tell you something.”

“What is it Alice?”

She told Don everything that had happened. She feared he would think she was using him to live, but Don didn’t see it that way. He listened wholeheartedly to what she had to say, and knew she was genuinely scared. He didn’t want to lose her. They weren’t in love, but Don could tell that she was special. He couldn’t let her go after less than a day.

“Do you have any rings?”

“Don? Why would we…”

“We may not know each other as well as we should, but I know I don’t want you to die. Marry me now, and maybe we can learn to love each other. I can’t let you die like this, Alice.”

Alice pulled the two rings out from her pocket. They had an impromptu, informal wedding. The only guest they had was the statue bust of a woman. And as crazy as it was, they became Mr. and Mrs. Webber.

As the sun began to set, Alice felt a cold breeze behind her as Don pulled her close.

“I hope this works out for you, Alice.”

She chose to ignore the voice she heard, and let her mind wander about her future with her husband as the sun set over the horizon.

Note: These next few chapters are mostly filler, but that will change after that!  :)
Don knew that Alice couldn't stay here. If someone put a curse on her here, they could easily find her and do it again. He knew there was a simple, friendly town not far from Appaloosa, but far enough that she would be safe. That night, Don and Alice left their lives in Appaloosa for Sunset Valley.

They arrived early morning at a large plot of land. Don had ordered the necessities to be delivered for them for when they arrived. It wasn't much, but Alice had her easel, which made her happy. No one in the town had ever heard of her art, so she got to start from the bottom again.

Don went to go get a job as soon as possible; luckily, there was an opening at the theatre. It wasn't much, but if they saved they could hopefully afford a roof over their heads.

Alice went to register officially as a painter. She never bothered to do that in Appaloosa, so they had no previous records for her.

Even though she didn't have anything to sell, Alice went to check out the local consignment store. The clerk was nice and friendly, and she met another woman named Monika. Alice wanted to make friends here, unlike being a loner in Appaloosa.

After an uneventful first day in Sunset Valley, Don and Alice went to bed. Alice couldn't help but think about her regrets. Don was nice, but she didn't know him that well. What if it was a mistake? She would've died, but what if she's miserable with him? She had to give him a chance, she concluded. He took a risk marrying her. In fact, what was in it for him to marry someone he barely knew? She soon drifted off into sleep, without dreams or nightmares.

Don burned overnight; apparently he has really sensitive skin. Alice couldn't help but giggle when she woke up to the sound of him wincing while trying to play his guitar.

"I didn't know I was married to a lobster."

"This lobster can play guitar better than you."

Alice giggled. Don was definitely a goofball; he was a year or two younger than her, and definitely showed it sometimes. But he got so burnt that he literally caught fire.

"Alice! Alice! Alice! The lobster is burning!"

Alice was at the consignment store the time of the butt fire, but Don was smart enough to put himself out in the shower.

.....................................

As time passed for Alice and Don Webber, they learned a routine. Don practiced guitar, went to work, came home, went to bed, repeat the next day. Alice woke up, painted, went to the consignment store, went home and painted, then went to bed. They were rarely romantic; a kiss or two here and there was as lovey-dovey as they ever were.

Alice knew what she wanted in life. She wanted a large, happy family. She wanted to be around to see her kids grow up and get married and have grandkids, so she knew she needed to have them young so she could see more of their lives. Don didn't argue; he wanted to feel like he was married to Alice. By raising a family together, he thought that maybe she could love him like he had grown to love her. Everything she did made him smile; her laugh, watching her paint, even the way she slept. Don had fallen for her head over heels.

When Alice started having morning sickness, she knew she was pregnant. She was excited to have her first child, and to her surprise, she was excited to raise her child with Don.

Alice spent the next few months in front of her easel, daydreaming of names for their unborn child. Don was a helpful husband, and gave many back massages as necessary. Unsurprisingly, she went into labor in front of her easel:

"Don!"

"Hi Alic... OH MY GOSH ALICE WHAT IS HAPPENING WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!?!"

"Either help me or go play guitar and leave me alone!"

Don then hurriedly grabbed his guitar and headed outside until Alice allowed him back in.

When Don walked in a few hours later, he was surprised to see Alice completely calm.

"Jayden, you are so handsome my little boy, I hope you turn out like your daddy. Your dad is the most selfless man I have ever met. He's also really good at playing the guitar; maybe you'll learn to play that too someday. I know he loves you just as much as I do."

Don quietly walked back outside, smiling from ear to ear. Hearing her say those things made him feel lucky to be Don.

Awwwww that was so sweet.  Welcome Jayden.

Don is a good man.  I think Alice is already more than half in love with him.  She just hasn't figured it out yet.
