Forum update
« on: September 02, 2014, 01:43:24 AM »
Will you be updating the link and the very top left of the screen that is currently for Carl's The Sims 3 Guide? Also, will we have a tab in the menu at the top of the forum Next to Home and The Sims 3? I often use these links to go straight to the guide, so it would be useful to have one that takes us straight to the new guide.

Yes - very soon, although if an artist wants to step up to plate and share a new logo for the Forum, that'd be welcome.. else I'll try to do it myself. It needs to be transparent background (png) and look similar to how it does now, just with the Sims 4 logo in the middle. You can email/attach to [email protected] if you volunteer. I won't be offended if no one does, I'm just a bit busy right now. I think I can do it myself just by cutting out the middle section, but the font might not look right with the new Sims 4 logo.

The links I can do myself.

I have another suggestion - we have two links at the top - one for show unread posts since last visit, and another for new replies. Is it possible to split the former into Sims 3 and Sims 4? It might get confusing as to which one we are replying to if we are looking at posts this way.

I was thinking the very same thing.

I personally wouldn't.

That has the potential to split up the community, which is not a good thing in any way.

EDIT: Just realised I need to explain that a bit.

The only way to split "show unread posts/new replies" would be to have separate forums on separate MySQL databases, which is why I said it has the potential to split the community as you'd need to have 2 separate forums with separate logins.

...I've poked at forum software way, way too much over the past 14 years... >_<

...or you could click the big "unread posts" link on each individual forum rather than using the forum-wide link instead.

Basically does the same thing as what you're wanting.

Thanks for pointing that out. I have been using the one on top (by my avatar) and I was also wondering where to find a more focused new post link.

You're right, and it would be tough to do to the point I am not sure I'd want to. I'm not sure if you can ignore categories, or not, but I assume most people who know something wouldn't mind answering a question from someone new to Sims 3, or at least directing them to a post. I'm glad you enlightened folks to the option to read new posts from each Forum individually, so thanks.

Additionally, I'd like to point out that simchuff has stepped up and sent me an email with a new logo at the top - I got it pointed to the Sims 4 guide today, so thanks to him we have a nice looking logo that leads to the Sims 4 Guide.. He was even patient and made the font larger for me, and that is much appreciated. I'll work on making links to the 4 Guide in a similar way as we have Sims 3, but in a few days. I'll likely just put it right next to home, so it'll be Home > The Sims 4 > The Sims 3 > Help

The logo looks great, well done simchuff.

@Khaine: I didn't notice the unread topics button until you pointed it out, thanks!

If memory serves correctly...

To do the "unread replies" thing, other than the link I mentioned, you'd need 2 MySQL databases and to split the forums. But, to have logins work on both forums, you'd have to make sure both setups point to the same members table in the SQL database (so one database would be the "primary" and the other would be the "secondary").

Then, just to top it all off, Unread Replies go by cookies, so you'd need to have a domain name for each forum as WELL so the cookies can be properly set.

It's do-able, but it's a pain and it means paying for two domain names. >_<

This should help people who want only The Sims 3 or 4 boards to show up in unread posts - you can ignore boards from your profile > ignore board options. Show unread replies will override this, but posts from ignored boards should not show up in show recent posts. This doesn't make them completely invisible, it's just to help sort out things you don't want to read. Many do it for the babble board.
