I haven't bought it yet, but I might after these comments.

Would it be a good idea for someone to start a poll to give sims 4 a rating out of 10? I would find it useful to see what most people think in such a simple way... :)

It's been an up and down for me so far. I had so many hassles actually installing the game that it really dampened my enthusiasm. But, now that I'm actually playing it, it doesn't seem so bad. I re-made a Sim I had gotten attached to in the Sims 3, and right now I'm working on her dream to become a writer.

EDIT:

So after giving it a bit of playtime, I can say that this is a game I like. I don't know about expansions, but knowing me, I'll think "Nah, I'll pass" and then end up buying it anyways. -Looks at ITF expansion-

While I'm still getting the hang of the controls and the new career system, I can say that I think I'm getting my money's worth from the game.

Got home yesterday to find that I'd lost power in the house while I was at work.  This pretty much set my game back to about day 4.  I know I read on the Sims 4 site that autosaves were an option, but apparently they're not activated by default or they are few and far between.  I need to figure that one out!

I like the event challenges very much -- the micro-goals make it a more hands-on situation where you really can get a feel for how well or poorly you're doing.  The rewards for hitting a Gold result are pretty nice too!

I've learned that it's not wise to queue up actions after queuing up a cooking action, at least until the cooking has started.  Some actions seem to just override others, and several times I've paid the cost of the ingredients up front only to see my sim skip the cooking entirely and go do whatever else I'd queued up.

So far I only have three radio stations -- Pop, Indie and Classical.  Then again my radio is on the low end.  Does anyone know if there are more stations on more expensive sound systems?

I like that when I'm in the bedroom the music from the living room is much quieter, but I get the same thing when I'm focused on the living room but my camera is outside the house walls as well.  I understand the mechanic (music behind a wall is harder to hear) but the implicit idea behind cutaway outer walls is that you have an open feel to the room so I'd think the music should still be normal from that angle.

I like the new dance moves, they're almost as goofy as my own clumsy RL ones!  Strange that sims dancing together usually are side-by-side rather than facing each other.  If could understand that when dancing with strangers or friends, but not while on a date :D  Maybe that's an issue with floor space and a more open area would allow more face-to-face dancing.

I think it's interesting that EA decided to deflate the numbers for Lifetime Rewards and for the activities that give you satisfaction points.  At first I thought "Steel Bladder only costs 2000 points?  I'll have it in no time!" and then I realized that most satisfaction point rewards I've seen are in the 25-50 point range.  After about a week I'd accrued 1250 points, so it's obviously possible with a little effort.  Heck, just stay in a flirty mood around a girlfriend and you're constantly getting flirty Whims that are easy to fill.

I think I'm finally get the hang of the new controls. At least for the most part. So I'm starting a Legacy with Yvonne Greenfield, a sim I created. Anyway, the first eligible bachelor she met was Don Lothario of all sims. They're living together now. And, I'm building my first Sims 4 house! We will see how it goes.

@echo, I haven't tried a more expensive stereo, but I think that sims generally get 3 stations to choose from. I've seen Pop, and I know there's Romantic. Maybe it depends on your sim's traits.

I'm definitely on the fence about TS4 after about 4 hours of game play.  I like the emotion system and some of the new features but I feel like they came at a pretty high price, namely very limited towns and build/buy/wardrobe options.  To be fair, I started playing TS3 after Late Night came out, so perhaps the base game was equally limited when it was released, I don't know.  To me TS4 doesn't really feel like an improvement over TS3 - it seems more like a sideways move with equal parts exciting, new features and disappointing lack of other features.  I'm not sorry I bought it, but I don't love it, or at least not yet.

LIKES
New CAS - it took some getting used to but I love how my sims look even more than I did in TS3.

New build mode - I love being able to place whole rooms.  I can't tell you how much TS3 time I spent ripping stuff down and redoing it.  Hopefully the upgrades to build mode will reduce this.

New collectibles, skills and professions.  Lots of stuff to do!  Treasure maps!!!

Aspiration and Wishes - similar to TS3 in concept with some variety so that it doesn't feel like a rehash of TS3.

Emotions

Achievements - you can unlock items for completing achievements.  I got a 'romance' item for having a gold-medal date.  I don't know yet if the item is unlocked across all games or just for the sim who completed the achievement.

Social Goals - There were specific activities that my sim was tasked with on her first date.  The more she completed the higher level she finished with (in this case she finished a gold date) and the better the reward.  This is linked in with the achievements.

It seems easier to discern other sims' traits.

Multi-tasking

Separate friendship and romance relationship meters

2 towns and easy travel between them



DISLIKES
Not enough customization options in CAS and build mode - I miss being able to apply custom patterns to my sims clothing and furnishings.  I know it is possible to do custom recolors but the process is so cumbersome and involves at least one 3rd party mod that I won't bother with it.

The furnishings, build items, and clothing options are pretty limited, but I assume EA is already working on SPs and store items to fix that.

The controls are different enough from TS3 that I find them not particularly intuitive and I am having some trouble adjusting.  However, I think this will be less of an issue the more I play the game.

No moodlet manager!!!  It appears to have been replaced by a potion that clears negative moodlets.  I presume this is a single use item and we will have to buy a lot of them if we want to get rid of pesky moodlets.

Game is laggy on my PC, which is pretty robust - although the graphics card could stand to be updated.  Loading screens between neighborhoods take at least a minute, sometimes more. 

Sparse information on items and collectibles.  For example, I can send off my crystals, gems, and metals to the geological society for$20 and they will send back elements.  I can put the elements in a display rack and study them, increasing focus, but I haven't found any other use for them besides selling.

It seems harder to build relationships with other sims.  I assume this could be easier by taking advantage of emotions and objects with emotion auras.

No consignment store or self-employment - I assume this will come back via an EP somewhere down the road.

Towns and neighborhoods seem very small.

That being said, since we are all on this post, I know we will continue to play this game since most of us have been "Sims" addicts for 15 years.

I understand why they did it this way. They made the game run quickly and smoothly.

BUT we lost 95% of it's functionality. The author of the ABC article put it best, "I couldn't even buy a dishwasher."

So, yes, I am extremely disappointed with the Sims 4 and with EA, but I will still be playing it.... call me crazy!  ;)

For anyone still having trouble with the new camera controls, I figured out a trick!  Use the WASD keys to move the camera around.  Then just use your mouse buttons to zoom and turn, etc!  The controls are actually really nice now that I figured that out... >.<

Gardening has become a lot more profitable.  The splicing thing is really cool!  Right now I have a tree that when I harvest it I get carrots, bananas, apples, grapes, and strawberries.  I haven't figured out what the max amount you can splice on one plant is yet though.

I love this game so much!

I noticed this happening as well but didn't make the connection between what speed it was set to when they left for work and the time spent at work.  Just noticed that sometimes they seemed to be gone for a few minutes and sometimes it was more like 10 seconds.  Good eye!


One annoying thing -- I went to have my sim plan the wedding with his fiancee.  Selected the wedding ceremony, guests, singer, mixologist, and put it all in the local park.  It kicked the ceremony off immediately, but there was no bar, no wedding arch, no guest seating, etc.  I placed all of those via the build menus, and then while I was chatting with the guests (one of the event goals) both my sims decided they needed to go to work RIGHT NOW.

Seems like sim jobs don't offer leave for weddings/childbirth/etc.  Weird.

Same thing happened to me! Except it wouldn't let me go to build/buy mode--did you have a cheat of some kind or did mine just not work the way it was supposed to?

I find that since I don't "promise" the wishes anymore, I pay a lot less attention to them. I have to keep reminding myself to remove one if I don't want to try to do it, as opposed to capturing one before it disappears. I have been focusing a lot more on the overall aspiration and the reward goals.

I was so psyched up for TS4! Granted, I've only played for a few hours, but I find it odd. I even tried to put the camera on the "TS3" setting but that didn't even help. This morning when I downloaded it and played, I did the motherlode cheat(yep still a die-hard cheater  :P ) and I bought the biggest most expensive rooms and built a large, mostly useless house. So a little while ago I fired it up to give it another try, bulldozed the house, and built my normal box way. I was trying to do it right, so I built one large square. Than I added doors, windows and I was attempting to put curtains on the windows when the camera did something wonky. I ended up only able to look across the street at my dude standing on his lot. So in frustration I quit. I'll give it another shot later. So my basic first impression isn't all that great, but I've been a loyal EA fan over the last few years so was it worth $70? I'm sure it will be once I've gotten over the odd way the camera works. I have faith in the new sims!

No, I haven't started with the cheating yet.  I know that when I open that door I'll never be able to close it, and I want to get some impressions of the vanilla game before I move on to the fudge-ripple version :D

All I did was hit the F2 key to go into buy mode while in the park.  I bought a bar for the drinks, a wedding arch, and then moved a bunch of the park's own benches to the arch so the guests could have a seat.

Still, i do hope they add the full range of life stages later on in DLC and packs. Makes it more interesting imho than seeing a baby age up to a kid instantly. WHAT i'd love to see in the sims series is aging that occurs naturally rather than just clicking something to do it or having a set time that it occurs. (As in, your baby starts getting bigger and older every day, then the same with child and so on.) Think that would be interesting to have.
Still want to poke around in the build your own house stuff but i don't like to use cheats to get money so have to wait till i have enough to build what i want.

I've only played for about an hour, (yesterday it mostly was just loading, and I have to focus on schoolwork before I can actually start playing.. Ugh) but so far I'm loving it a lot more than I thought I would. The Emotions are really fun to play around with.  I haven't got into Build mode at all yet, so my sims don't even have a house. Hehe. I like how immediately the neighbors came over and started socializing with my sims. I'm not sure if I'm going to like the new relationship system, it's more realistic, but I kind of liked meeting a Sim and getting married that same day. :P
