Invisible sims and cannot control them

Upon my return from the future, My sims are invisible. I have 7 sims in my family but only 3 have shown up and i cannot control them. The ones that have appeared seem to have crashed and the rest just are not there. I absolutely love this family and i really hope to get them back. Does anyone know how to fix this or have any ideas. I have tried the reset sim cheat already and have completely shut down my laptop in hopes to fix it. The icons down the left hand side have all disappeared (the selectable ones) and the image of the current controlable sim is not there. My household funds have gone down to 0 and i just can't do anything.

That sounds like you may have a corrupt save.

Do you run any mods? And do you have a save prior to going home?

This is a fairly common problem, particularly if you have Supernatural. The usual fix is to restore a backup file, clear the game cache and then load the restored backup file. There are other solutions listed in Crincict's Blog:
