Sims 3 won't start after reinstalling
« on: May 26, 2014, 09:39:23 PM »
This is probably going to be kind of long, so sorry in advance!
My laptop has some pretty major issues. There's nothing I can really do about it right now, but I'm just working with what I have. So, a few months ago I decided to delete my WoW installation (which somehow involved manually deleting files, I'm not really sure why... I'm sure there was a good reason at the time) and my computer freaked out and deleted half of my installed programs, including all of my Sims games. They still showed up in the add/remove programs dialog, though, so I clicked "uninstall" on all of them, which caused my computer to complain about them being gone and remove them from the list. It also presumably deleted their uninstall files and registry entries, because those are gone. (I've already checked, so don't just point me to the manual uninstall page.)

Not having TS3 on my laptop didn't really bother me until now, so I didn't try to reinstall anything until yesterday. But, now my game doesn't work! I've only been trying to install and play the base game, none of my expansions, but it seems to think that the expansions are still there and crashes when they aren't there. The reason I think that that is the problem is because it doesn't seem to have an issue when I first install it (but I can't really play it that way because my CD got trapped in a dead computer years ago, so I use nraas nocd) but when I update, that's when it starts having issues (it displays an error on the launcher when I open it to test, as well) and every time I reinstall, it tells me that I still have expansions installed (but, of course, there's no option for "just delete whatever it is you're seeing").

I've already nuked all of my custom content, all of my store items, all of my saved games, in fact I've deleted every sims related file and registry entry I can find, other than HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Electronic Arts>EA Core, since I don't know whether or not that's Sims related. Specifically, I've deleted HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Electronic Arts>Sims 3 from the registry, the entire EA folder from My Documents, checked AppData, Program Files, and the Installshield folder for any stray files (there are none), even deleted the shortcuts from my desktop, reinstalled several times, and rebooted. Not necessarily in that order. (Any file deletion and registry editing happened after I uninstalled the game). It still doesn't work. I get a "Service Initialization Failed" error when I try to run the game directly, and some sort of "Error occurred during startup, check the log for more details" dialog when I start the launcher. I can post the log if you want, but it seems to just be system information, I can't find anything particularly related to whatever problem it's experiencing.

Please please please, if you have ANY idea what I can do to fix this, I'd be so grateful! I'm getting desperate here!

Welcome to our Forum.

If you haven't actually done a manual uninstall, it certainly wouldn't hurt and it would remove any doubt about what may be left behind on your computer.

If you've lost your disk long ago, what is your installation source?  You mentioned nraas nocd, but I don't use mods and don't know how that would work.  If your game is registered on the Sims 3 site, you can download it digitally through Origin without any mods and that's what I would recommend.

If you don't mind posting the error log, please go ahead because it might be of use to someone who is more technical minded than me.

I have done a manual uninstall, at least as much as I'm able... everything it told me to delete was already gone when I tried.
My game isn't registered and I lost the serial a long time ago. I'm installing using a medium that's never failed before, and given the other symptoms, I don't think that's the issue. I'll post the log when I'm able (my mom is bugging me to get off the computer right now).

Sorry for double-posting, but where does the launcher put its error logs? I thought I found it before (it was just system information, though) but it got deleted when I was reinstalling over and over... and the launcher didn't put a log where the old one was this time so maybe I was looking at the wrong thing? I thought it would put the log in My Documents, but there's nothing in My Documents/Electronic Arts/Sims 3 anymore...

Edit: I tried to install the expansions it seems to think it has, and this happened:

As I already mentioned, I don't use mods and don't know how one would work for downloading the digital version of the game.  You don't have the disk, it's not registered, and you've lost the code for installation.  So, I have to ask this question.  Is this a pirated copy of the game?

I'm taking a guess here, as I've never run into this problem myself. But it sounds like you may have deleted something or something has gotten corrupted during the uninstall/re-installation process. So you may want to try uninstalling and reinstalling one more time. But read on first. There maybe a few tips that might help fix the problem.

Have you tried a program called Ccleaner? It's free - http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download -- This helps clean up temporary files, internet cache files and other files that are left behind that are no longer being used, after uninstalling.

This may help. Also while searching for possible solutions, I came upon a thread here on the forum that maybe able to help. It explains what the error is, and some tips on how to fix it. I also found something about the error on Crinrict's site that maybe helpful as well.

I hope this helps, :)

It turns out that EA's instructions for how to do a manual uninstall are incomplete. Simswiki has a better one that actually works. There were a bunch of registry entries that were put in a different place than EA claimed because my computer is 64-bit. My game seems to run fine now.

And yeah, I had run ccleaner about 5 times. =P

I'm glad your game seems to be fine now, but I'd still like to have an answer to this question.
