The Introduction (taken from the personal journal of BPM)

"I'm not quite sure why they recruited me"

"It might have been my mom's military connections"

"Maybe it had to do with my traveling experience"

"All I know is that I'm in..."

 "and apparently, in too deep..."

Good start!
Thank you.  I plan to get the first chapter of adventure number one up mid-week or thereabouts.  It's all scripted out, I'm just getting the shots staged and being way too picky about them.

Oooh, this definitely looks interesting. :)
Thanks!  I'm glad you're intrigued!

I'm glad you find it intriguing  Given the timing with my legacy, this was absolutely the right time to start this story!  :=)  I basically saw Barbara as a chance to combine elements from Indiana jones, Lara Croft, Isabelle Lightwood, Sherlock Holmes, and Stephen Moffat's take on the eighth Doctor (in the Night of the Doctor).  Her first chapter should be all ready to go by mid-week.

Ooh! A mummy! It smells like a great adventure is boiling under the surface...

On a side note, who's Isabelle Lightwood you mentioned? Sounds like a fantasy book character. I swear I've read it somewhere during my constant trips to the library.

Isabelle Lightwood is from Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series (and the movie "City of Bones" which is based on the book of the same name).
Glad you're liking the look of it.  The intro shots were all staged during Babs' teen years.  She'll have new, young adult adventures for this storyline  :=)

I can't believe I didn't comment on this!  I'm really intrigued!  I haven't read your legacy yet (I plan to soon), so I'm not familiar with any backstory, but this certainly looks like a lot of fun.  It's been bookmarked ^^

Thanks!  This story was really an accidental offshoot of the legacy.  Barbara (as a child) just happened to be in the household where Mal (the heir) moved, and this unique, little child aged up to teen and captivated my imagination.

Barbara Pleasant-Mithrilen: The Fist of Simla, Chapter 1

The Fist of Simla
 Chapter 1

The sun beat down on the Shang Simla marketplace.  There was the chatter of voices and the chaos of many paths crossing.  The marketplace was in the midst of one of its busier days.

That would be helpful.  The last thing she wanted was to draw attention.

She slipped easily in and out of the crowd and into a shop that no locals seemed to have an interest in.

"Would you care to see some relics, my dear?" the merchant asked her only customer.

"I'm looking at one right now," came the sharp-tongued response.
"Okay, wise cracker, enough with your wit," the merchant replied lightheartedly, "your instructions are on the laptop."  Turning, the customer found that a laptop had appeared on the table behind her while they'd been speaking.

"You know," the witty customer said in a casual tone, "if this whole spy thing doesn't work out for you, you could always become a magician."
Smiling, the merchant said, "Didn't I already say that was enough of your wit, Babs?"

"No, seriously," she continued, "you could do birthday parties, bat mitzvahs...how are you at balloon animals?" and then the conversation trailed off as she pulled up her assignment on the laptop.

Agent BPM-The Fist of Simla must be obtained.  Item is a rare blue gem.  Former possession of Emperor Chang.  Buried with him and located in the Dragon's Maw.  Item is a key to gain access to catacombs beneath imperial palace.  Threat to royal family.  Matter of national security.

Also being sought by international jewel thief Victor Clavell and NAPS agent Demond DeCourte

"Off to collect a relic?" the merchant inquired as Agent Barbara Pleasant-Mithrilen walked out of the shop.

"Yep," Babs replied, "and this one's almost as old as you."

After getting her assignment, and taking lighthearted shots at her local contact, Barbara went off to prepare.
She went to the apartment she keeps in China:  her work takes her there often enough to justify the expense.  She quickly changed out of her local and attire and into something more suited for tomb exploration.
That's when her phone rang.

"Hello, Mum," she said, clicking her phone on.
"Finally!" came the reply.  "I've been trying to get ahold of you all morning."
"Mum, you know I don't always get cell service when I'm traveling."
"Oh yes, I know," came the response, "the busy life of a traveling saleswoman.  I can't believe my daughter gets to travel the world for a living."

As the conversation, full of pleasantries and the care of a concerned mother, continued, Barbara found herself idly pondering the backstory the agency had created for her.
The story about her career kept her family from asking questions.  That was important to Babs.  The less her family knew, the less likely they were to feel the repercussions of her real job.  Barbara had been approached as a teen by representatives from the SIA:  Sims Intelligence Agency.

With another promise to be safe and careful and another, "I love you," being said, Barbara clicked her phone off.
She liked knowing that she was making the world a safer place.
She liked  feeling like she was making a difference.
She didn't like lying to her family.
She never got a chance to tell her father the truth.
She was living a lie with what she was telling her mother and siblings.
She'd make it up to them one day.

Not today though.  Today, she had things to do.

Wow!  274 views for nothing more than an intro and a first chapter!  I just wanted to say how appreciative I am of my readers.  Chapter 2, in which we'll actually get started on the first mission, is in the works.  Thanks again for your interest in and support of my writing and Babs' story!

Barbara Pleasant-Mithrilen: The Fist of Simla, Chapter 2

Chapter 2

The Dragon's Maw:  a former palace, later a tomb, and now a national landmark.

If Barbara was going to gain entrance, the first obstacle was going to be getting past the guards.  Of course, given that there was no reason to suspect anyone would be trying to break into the centuries old landmark, the guards were more ceremonial than functional.

Barbara could have easily eliminated the problem with a mild application of violence.  However, she tries to avoid dishing out beatings to those who don't entirely deserve it.  She scanned her surroundings and found a quick and easy solution.

The friendly tourist from Appaloosa Plains was simply enjoying the scenery when the stranger approached her.
"Lovely view, isn't it," the stranger greeted her.

"Oh yes," she replied.  "Absolutely breathtaking."
"Speaking of breathtaking," the stranger said, "do you feel like the heat might be getting to you?  Like you might collapse?"

"What?" the tourist responded in confusion.
"Oh, did I forget to mention this hundred bucks?" the stranger said.

Quickly grabbing the bill, the tourist began to hyperventilate and fell to the ground.

"Help!  Someone come quickly!" yelled Barbara.

As the guards approached, she called out, "She just collapsed.  I think it might be heat stroke."

With the guards completely focused on the apparently unconscious young lady, Babs made her way to the Dragon's Maw.  That's where the next obstacle appeared.  The opening to the Maw was still closed.

An impenetrable slab of stone stood between Babs and entering the Dragon's Maw.  Of course, Barbara has always interpreted terms like "impenetrable" as horrendous exaggeration.  Some quick work with a battery powered fan blew away some of the excess dust.  A follow up inspection of the patterns in the stone showed her well-trained eye a concealed panel.  With a push of the panel and a slight twist, she got the door moving.

That's the same moment that she noticed the presence behind her.
As she whirled into a defensive stance, she was greeted by a slight chuckle.  "Thanks for figuring out the doorway," said a smiling blonde fellow, with just a trace of a British accent, "I was having ever so much difficulty."

"DeCourte," Barbara said, recognizing the character now facing her as the agent sent by the National Agency for Sims Protection.

"Ah, I see my reputation proceeds me," he said with a smile.  "You've no doubt heard terrible things about me.  All true, I might add.  And I imagine you must be the agent SIA sent in.  I knew they were sending someone, but I was never informed of how lovely she'd be."
"Well, I guess your intel is seriously lacking," she said, turning to head into the Maw.  "You should wait here.  You'll have a great view of me leaving with the Fist.”

"Kind of you to offer, but I think I'd enjoy the privilege of your company going through this musty old tomb," he replied, looking nervously around as he crossed the threshold into the Maw itself.  "Besides, two heads are better than one and all that."  Then he quickly added, "This doesn't mean I trust you, though."

"The feeling's mutual," she added, scanning the tomb and not bothering to look back at him.
