Great update! I like how you wrote the Altos here, more human (even if they are sims ;) ) than a stereotypical villain or evil portrayal.

Whew! I'm glad that the Landgraabs made it out mostly unscathed, if not exhausted d slightly traumatized. Interesting that Vita is showing a bit of remorse though...

Well, I couldn't bring myself to let anything terrible happen. As for Vita, she's by far my favourite character to write, mostly because I spent quite a while working out her personality and back-story No spoilers  :-X

Good to have you back!
This is just getting more and more interesting. I'm mad about your dialogue - it's so natural without being boring. Excellent work! :)

Thanks! I've never been quite sure about the dialogue so I'm glad it's working.  :D

Thank you! I'm so glad you're enjoying it.

I confess that the Altos are by far my favourite Sims family ever, so like I said before I worked quite hard on making their personalities work. They're certainly not completely evil.

Parker – Holly?

Michael  - ??

Ethan – MaryKay??

VJ – Lisa?

Candy – Davy?

Dallas – Bebe (confirmed)

“What’s that?” said Lara, peering over River’s shoulder.

“This?” River grinned. “I’m trying to work out who’s going to the dance with who. And who they should ask if they haven’t done so yet.”

“So, you’re trying to match-make?”

“Exactly. Who do you want me to set you up with?”

“Woah, I dunno. I was just gonna go on my own.”

“Same here. Romance is so overrated. But it’s great fun setting the others up.”

“So you know, Davy already asked Candy.”

“Ah.” She marked it down in her notebook. “Because nobody saw that coming.”

Lara rolled her eyes. “Tell me about it. Has anyone, like, ever seen them apart? Anyway, don’t suppose you need a hand?”

“With pairing people up? You bet.”

***

“Holly! Hey, Holly, wait up?”

Holly turned to see Malcolm running down the hill towards her. Her stomach clenched; after Nancy’s impromptu visit the night before she’d realised what her parents had done. And what could have happened to Malcolm...

“Mal, I am so sorry,” she began. “I had no idea what my parents did and I couldn’t believe it when I found out...”

“Are you kidding?” he said, beaming, “That was the best holiday ever!”

“What?”

“Well, it was kinda scary at first. But then Dad was like Superman and he stopped the fire and we escaped and it was the coolest thing ever. And then we went to Paris, and Mum spent most of the time being stressed out but she’s always like that on holiday and so Dad and I went to these art galleries and we saw the Mona Lisa and did some other stuff and then it was my birthday and we climbed the Eiffel Tower and you could see for miles and miles and miles!”

He stopped, out of breath. “And now we’re home. Oh, Dad got me the new Galaxy Battles action figures but Morty and Bella say they’re nerdy so will you play with them with me sometime?”

“Err, sure?”

Malcolm threw his arms around her. “You’re the nicest person ever. C’mon, we’ll be late for school.”

***

“So go on then,” said Holly. “What did you get?”

“A B,” Bebe said with a shrug. “I didn’t study for it or anything, though. You?”

“I got a C,” Holly said, barely suppressing a grin.

“Hols! That’s awesome. That’s, like, your first one in chemistry, right?”

“Yeah. Couldn’t believe it. Remember a while back, when Mr Steel gave me a load of tutoring in science and maths? Well, that helped. I mean, it’s never going to be my strong point but good grades in science should help with...” She was about to say ‘University’, but bit her tongue at the last second. “Stuff,” she said limply.

“Sure it will. Don’t get yourself down about it. I might be okay at science and things, but give me some Shakespeare and I’m just lost. That’s your thing.”

“Aw, thanks!”

“You might want to know, Parker’s just over there.”

Holly jumped and blushed. “Oh gosh. Do I look okay?”

“Sure. You did just have a chemistry lesson with him, you know. He has seen you.”

“This is different. The dance is in a few weeks. He’s coming this way, he’s coming this way!”
Parker strolled up to them, holding something behind his back. “Good afternoon, ladies. Could I borrow Holly for a second?”

Holly’s cheeks turned an almost violent shade of pink. “Sure!” she squeaked.

“Good luck!” Bebe whispered, and then hurried off. Holly knew her best friend well enough to know that she would undoubtedly be listening in on them. It didn’t really bother her.

“So, look,” said Parker. “I know loads of people have this all worked out, and hire professional dancers and whatever, but I didn’t really get a chance to do that.” He pulled out a bunch of roses. “Holly, will you come to the dance with me?”

Holly could hear Bebe squealing. She beamed and took the roses from Parker.

“I’d love to!”

Bebe came running up to them and threw her arms around Holly.

“Sorry if I’m interrupting but omigoshHolsheaskedyoutothedanceomigoshomigosh!”

“I know!” She turned to Parker. “So, I’ll see you Monday?”

“See you around.” He winked at her and sauntered off.

“He’s almost as attractive as Dallas,” said Bebe.

“Almost? Don’t be stupid, Bebe,” said Holly cheerfully. “So, any Friday night plans- oh, hey Ethan!”
Ethan, who was walking through the playground with a huge bunch of balloons, spun round to face her. He seemed startled.

“Oh, hi,” he said. “Just had Lara trying to get me to ask Mary to the dance. Weird, huh?” He seemed a little flustered.

“Cool. Listen, the most amazing thing ever just happened!”

“Yeah?”

“Parker... asked me to the dance!”

An unidentifiable expression crossed Ethan’s face, but he turned it into a smile. “That’s... really great. I’m real happy for you, Holly.”

“Thanks! What are those balloons for anyway?”

“Oh, these? They’re, err, for Darlene’s birthday!”

“I thought that was in March,” said Bebe in confusion.

“It is! She moved it,” Ethan said earnestly. “You know what Darlene’s like. She wanted to move Christmas to September, too! Anyway, got to go... buy her a cake, bye.” He fled, just as Lara and River came running up to them.

“Was that Ethan?” asked Lara.

“Yup. He was acting super weird too,” said Bebe with a shrug. “Were you guys trying to pair him with Mary?”

“Uh-huh,” River laughed. “I feel a bit mean, to be honest. Hey, Holly, have you considered asking Parker?”

“He just did!”

“What? Ok, if anyone asks that was our idea,” Lara scowled. “Seriously though, congrats. I mean, boys aren’t really my thing but...”

“Hey,” someone drawled from behind them. “Any of you Holly Alto?”

They turned to see a boy around their age watching them. Holly gave him a strange look.

“That’s me. Why?”

“Lukas Moran. Me and my Dad are moving in ‘round here. I’m starting here Monday. Apparently we’ve gotta go out to dinner with your folks later so he sent me over here to introduce myself. Kinda stupid but whatever. So see ya.” He wandered off, flicking his fringe to the side as he went. Holly glanced over at her friends.

“What was that about?”

“You’re going to some dinner party with him later?” asked Lara casually.

“Dad said something to that effect, I guess...”

“Don’t suppose you get a plus one?” She looked at her hopefully.

“Says the girl who isn’t interested in boys,” said Bebe sarcastically.

Oh, school dances...so full of drama and romance!  ;D But in all seriousness really good chapter. As a person who had a prom earlier this year, the teens behavior is very realistic. Great job capturing the reactions and emotions! Can't wait to see more!

Sorry about the delay, for some reason this was a really difficult chapter to write. Anyway, here it is, at last  ::)

“I don’t know why we have to look after mum’s friend’s stupid dog,” scowled Bella. “And I really don’t know why I have to walk him.”

“He is kinda cute,” Mortimer admitted.

“He’s a pain, that’s what. This is why I have a snake, not a puppy. Tyler, stop!” She barely managed to keep hold of the lead as the little dog tugged at it. “We’re nearly at the park, you idiot.” She smiled at Mortimer. “Thanks for coming with me, by the way.”

“No problem. Vita came for lunch, and frankly I’d rather do anything than listen to Dad suck up to her. Plus, she’s got David what’s-his-face, Moran, the guy who owns all the sport teams, on her side now and he’s the worst. Seriously, he talks so much and his son Lukas is such a show-off. And he’s there too, so...” He made a face. “They’re all insufferable.”

Bella chuckled. “Fair enough. Michael’s having a band practice, so at least I’m avoiding inner ear damage out here.”

“They’re that bad?”

“Michael, Ethan and Parker? Terrible. Parker barely even knows how to hold the guitar, let alone make it sound good. And they’re experimenting with clashing chords.”

“Sounds painful.”

“Oh, it is.”

They reached the waterfall and Bella removed the leash from Tyler’s collar. “There, run free. Run very far, if you can. Away from me.” The two of them sat down next to the lake. It was a gloomy, overcast afternoon and hardly any light was coming through the dark clouds overhead.

“It’s weird, isn’t it?” Bella said after a moment.

“What is?”

“That this whole place could be gone within the year, if the Altos get their way. There’ll just be a load of... skyscrapers.”

“Yeah,” muttered Mortimer. “It’s kinda sad.”

“Don’t you think there’s something a little strange about the whole thing?”

“What do you mean?” Mortimer said slowly.

“Why here? Why spend all that time, effort and money on building over Sunset when there’s tons of land they could build on? Just over the mountains it’s just empty space. Wouldn’t it be easier and way cheaper to just build Altopolis or whatever they’re calling it over there?”

Mortimer raised his eyebrows. “I’d never thought of that. You’re right. It doesn’t make any sense. Why are you the only one to have thought of that?”

“Maybe I’m just way more intelligent than all the adults in town.”

“You’re the smartest person I know, that’s for sure.”

Bella looked away so he couldn’t see her blushing.

At that moment, Tyler came bounding back to them, wagging his tail. He stopped in front of Bella and Mortimer and deposited something at their feet. It looked like some kind of rock. Mortimer picked it up and examined it.

“You do know that’s been in Tyler’s mouth, right?” Bella said in disgust, but Mortimer didn’t seem to hear her. His eyes widened and he shoved the rock towards Bella.

“Look at that!”

“Look at what?” She took the rock from him gingerly, and then gasped. There were flecks of red embedded in the stone, glimmering in the weak November light.

“Is that...”

“Ruby,” Mortimer breathed. He stood up and turned to Tyler. “Not at dumb as we thought, eh? Where’d you find this?” He took the rock back and let Tyler sniff it. His ears pricked up and he turned and ran back to the mountain side. Bella and Mortimer raced after him.

The recent downpours had disturbed the side of the waterfall, triggering a rock fall and exposing the inside of the rock. The stones piled at the bottom of the cliff face were all covered in red streaks, and a few of them had pink streaks too. Mortimer shook his head.

“This is crazy. These mountains, they’re full of...”

“Rubies, and whatever that pink stuff is,” Bella finished.

“And maybe more. They must be worth a fortune. Maybe there’s more under...”

He and Bella looked at each other in horror as they both realised.

“When’s the vote?” Bella whispered.

“Tomorrow,” Mortimer said.

They stared at each other a moment longer, and then turned and ran back towards the town, Tyler following at their heels.

***

“Dad.”

“Just a minute, Mortimer,” Gunther said, before turning back to Vita. “So, as you was saying...”

“Dad, we need to talk to you.”

“Later,” he snapped. “Sorry, Vita. Do carry on...”

“Mr Goth!” Bella shouted. “We need to talk to you now. It can’t wait.”

“Bella, we’re busy,” David Moran said, sounding bored. He raised an eyebrow at Gunther. “Kids, eh? Reminds me of this time when Lukas...”

“I suppose I could talk to you for a moment,” Gunther said loudly. Vita stifled a laugh.

“Outside?” Mortimer asked?

“Alright then,” Gunther got up and followed the two of them into the kitchen. “Just until David finishes his story, mind.”

Bella explained what they’d found at the waterfall, and what they reckoned was happening. When she had finished, Gunther regarded them for a moment, and then shook his head in amusement.

“There’s nothing in the Pinochle Mountains. The Goths have lived here for almost three centuries, don’t you think we’d know about a ‘load of rubies and pink stuff under Sunset’, as you put it.” He smiled sadly. “I know you don’t want things to change, but there’s nothing to be done.” Bella glowered at him.

“But, we saw the rocks!” Mortimer cried. “There was a great pile of them, and they were all shining and-”

“A lovely little tale,” Vita said softly, stepping into the kitchen. “But, Miss Bachelor, you are quite mistaken. There’s nothing there.”

“We’ll take you both there,” Bella said. “We’ll show you, Dad. And then you‘ll know that she’s lying.” He pointed at Vita. “We swear, it’s true.”

Vita held up her hands. “By all means, show us your treasure horde. Children, I promise you that there’s a perfectly logical explanation. Nick and I want to develop Sunset, not dig it up.”

“I’m eleven, not five,” Bella said darkly.

“Of course you are,” Vita said sweetly. She glanced up at Gunther. “I’ll tell David what’s going on. With any luck he won’t want to come.”

Mortimer and Bella shared a look. It seemed that Vita was equally unimpressed with her new ally as Gunther and Mortimer were.

A few minutes later, they headed off to the waterfall, accompanied by Gunther, Vita and, annoyingly, David. Bella called out to Tyler and he came hurrying up to them.

***

“It’s just up here,” Mortimer said. “We were walking Bella’s mum’s friend’s dog and he ran off and came back with this rock...”

“Did he now?” said Vita tersely.

She’s so transparent, thought Bella. She won’t be able to get out of this one.

But when they reached the waterfall, there was nothing there. Bella and Mortimer searched frantically but there was no trace of the rocks, or any sign of where they had fallen.

“They were there,” Mortimer said indignantly. “Bella, what about the one Tyler found?”

“I dropped it back with the others,” she said in alarm. “We’re not making this up, there was loads of ruby and gold in the rocks...” Her voice trailed off as the rain started to fall.

“I think I see what’s going on,” Vita said coolly. “Mortimer, your father’s been working a lot recently, hasn’t he? So you made up a silly story to try and get some attention from him. Understandable, but really, you should know better.”

“That’s not what...”

“I’ve had enough of this.” Gunther rounded on Mortimer and Bella. “You disrupted an important meaning to take us on this wild goose chase, it’s completely unacceptable.”

“We...”

“ENOUGH!”

“He’s right,” David said with a shrug. “Kids, this is important stuff you’re messing with. I really think that some sort of pun- Argh!”

Tyler, who had been splashing around in the lake, came bouncing up to him and Vita and started to shake himself dry, spraying dirty water everywhere. They both leapt back, but the heel of Vita’s shoe snagged on a lump of grass. She tripped and went sprawling backwards into the mud. Tyler leapt up on top of her and started licking her face.

“Get off me, you filthy mutt!” she screamed, shoving Tyler away. Bella and Mortimer didn’t even try to hide their laughter. Gunther ran over to help Vita to her feet.

“Are you okay?”

“Do I look okay?” She spat out every word, seething with rage. “This coat is ruined, my heel almost snapped, and, and...” She looked round at the four of them, and turned and stormed off. Gunther ran after her. Tyler flopped onto his side and Bella rubbed his belly.

“Good boy, Tyler,” she cooed. David rolled his eyes.

That was intense.  And even scarier was that someone was obviously following Bella and Mortimer.  Otherwise, how could the rubble pile have been cleared so soon.  Way to go Tyler.  ;)

Oh my goodness! Things are heating up... Agh, I hate things like this when the adults act all patronizing to the kids but you know the children are telling the truth! It happens all the time and agh! I love the kids. Haha. But, anyway, this was really good. :D Can't wait for more!

Thanks! Bella and Mortimer have certainly stumbled on something big. And I'm glad Tyler's so popular. He was just going to be in this chapter but  I might have to find a way to keep him  :P

The kids are great fun to write, so I figured they ought to take a more prominent role in the story. I don't have access to my gaming computer right now but the next chapter's taking shape so it should be out in a week or two. Glad you like it!

Re: Dreams of Sunset: Chapter 10 - Voting Day Part 1: Ticking Clocks (09/08/14)
« Reply #74 on: September 21, 2014, 05:05:17 PM »

Nancy stared at the clock, willing it to stop or start ticking backwards, but it was no use. Seven thirty drew closer by the second, by every tick of the clock. It was excruciating.

She looked down at the leather-bound book she had found in the stack of books she’d taken from the attic. It was an old history of Sunset Valley, published around thirty years previously. Most of it was rather dry, but at the back was an intricate family tree of all the Landgraabs since Gregory Landgraab, who had been the first to settle in Sunset almost two hundred years ago, and all their children, partners and in-laws. At the very bottom, the name Nancy Amélie Katherine Landgraab had been written beneath a picture of a smiling girl of five or six.

A good portion of the book had been dedicated to the various exploits of her ancestors. Gregory, who was the town’s founder in all but name. His grandson known simply as Admiral Landgraab, who for a time commanded the country’s navy and built the house that had almost killed them.  His son Kermit who had started up Landgraab Industries, and finally Nancy’s father Chester, who had turned the business into what it was today.

And me, Nancy thought, bitterly. Me, who’s about to lose it all.

She gritted her teeth and stood up. She needed some air.

***

Five hours, Holly thought. Five hours until everything was over. Her mother had it all planned out: while she gave her speeches, Holly got to stand at the side of the stage, nodding along and 'pretending to look charismatic and intelligent’ as her mother had put it. That had stung. She was hoping that if she just sat in the ‘park’ between the school and the diner and read the copy of Game of Thorns Bebe had lent her, the evening might somehow pass her by.

Small chance of that.

“Hols? You alright?”

Lara appeared in front of her, arms folded. “Don’t tell me you’re hiding,” she said scornfully.

“No,” Holly replied, jumping to her feet. “Just reading and, y’know, relaxing.”

“Uh huh. Well, reading’s boring, and you don’t exactly look relaxed. At all.” She put a hand on Holly’s shoulder. “What’s the worst that’s gonna happen?”

“I just... I don’t like this stuff, Lara. It’s so embarrassing, standing there while Mum goes on about some nonsense with everyone watching. And last time I went to one of these public meetings, she actually got me to go and make a presentation, right on the spot.”

Lara snorted. “You’re saying that you, the daughter of one of the most famous public speakers in the country, get stage fright?”

Holly blushed. “It’s hard, alright? And Mum seems to think that just because she can do it that means I can too! And she’s gonna be really stressed tonight, Dad too... Sorry, am I venting at you?”

“A bit. Don’t worry, I don’t mind.”

Holly opened her mouth to reply, but suddenly the heavens opened and rain started pouring down. Wrapping her arms around her book, her and Lara ran to the diner.

***

Nancy was being followed by a scruffy looking stray cat and for some reason it was making her very uncomfortable. Every time she looked at it, it stared at her with big, green eyes. It wasn’t hard to work out what it wanted; it looked like it hadn’t eaten in a while. She couldn’t get it to leave her alone, no matter how many time she tried to shoo it. By the time she got to Central Park, she decided to just ignore it. Hopefully it would wander off of its own accord.

“Leaflet?” A blonde girl who Nancy vaguely recognised as one of the Bunch children wandered up to her. “I’m meant to hand out all these... Oh. Hi Mrs Landgraab. I guess you don’t want one. Since you made them.”

Nancy didn’t know what to say. The only thing she could manage was “Why aren’t you at school?”

“School finished half an hour ago, Mrs L.”

“No it didn’t. It’s half past eleven.” She glanced at her watch and was shocked to see that the girl was right. How did I lose track so quickly? She shook her head and turned back to the girl. “No matter. What are those?”

“Leaflets. Some woman offered me §200 to give them out. Don’t ask me why it was worth so much to her.” She handed one to Nancy, who read the letters emblazoned on the front in bright crimson. “SAVE SUNSET TODAY.” It was imploring people to vote against the ‘destruction of history and culture and the creation of yet another energy-guzzling metropolis where individuality and hope will be crushed in a sea of grey concrete and despair.” The author, whoever they were, was certainly trying to hammer their point home. And was possibly an aspiring yet terrible poet.

“I’ve never seen this before in my life.”

“Well, whatever. That woman said you’d made it. Can I go?”

“You don’t know who she was?”

“I’ve seen her around, but I don’t know her name. Probably hasn’t lived here that long.”

“Well, what did she look like?”

She shrugged. “Black hair, in a sort of, like, updo?”

“What about her eyes?”

“Yeah, she had them.”

“I meant- Anyway, what about her height?”

“’Bout the same as you.”

“Weight? Distinguishing features? Piercings?”

“Why would I know? Only saw her for, like, a minute. She had black hair, okay? Bye. Cute cat by the way.”

She walked off. The stray meowed at her.

“Mum!” She turned to see Malcolm running up to her. “I’m so glad you’re here. Look, we got our reports and I got all A’s except for in Music and Sports and they’re stupid anyway!” He waved it in her face, and she managed a smile.

“That’s amazing, Mal. Well-”

“Awwwww! Kitty!” He knelt down and scratched the stray between the ears.

“Careful, it might have fleas.”

“No she doesn’t. She looks very clean. Good kitty!” The cat rolled onto its back and purred lazily. Malcolm smiled up at Nancy. “I think she’s a girl. Can we keep her? I’ll feed her and wash her and walk her every day, I promise. Wait, do you walk cats?”

“No. And I don’t think your father likes cats.”

“He said about two months ago that we should get one and you said no.”

“Fine. I don’t like cats. They shed and scratch and bring in mice...”

“But look at her! She’s so cute! Please? Please, please?”

“Don’t be ridiculous. We are not adopting some disgusting...”

It was at that exact moment that it started to rain. Malcolm looked at her in much the same way as the stray had. “Mum! It’s raining now, and she’ll get all wet and cold and there’s nowhere for her to go and she looks so sad-”

“Fine!” It came out louder than she’d intended and a few people looked at her in bemusement. She sighed. “She can sleep in the garage tonight, if she must. But no feeding her, or she’ll keep coming back.”

“But she looks so hungry!”

Nancy suddenly felt very tired. “Sure. We will feed it and you can even give it a bath if you really want to. Walk it, for all I care. Now let’s go home, before I freeze to death.”

She glanced at her watch. Four hours.
