Sims 3 Pose Packs - What's the Point?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.  On MTS I always see Pose Packs with themes like "Seated Poses", "Love Poses", and "New Baby Poses".  I've never bothered to download these because, frankly, my computer is slow as molasses and probably can't handle them.  But what I've always wondered is, besides storytelling, is there any point to getting different pose packs?  Do they add anything to gameplay itself?  And will the sims pose on their own or do you have to specify which pose they use and when?

This is the correct section. I have Pose Packs for my Bachelorette story (link in my signature) and they are purely for storytelling purposes. They don't have any gameplay effects and yes, you must specify the poses you want them to do. Posing is not autonomous. It's a big pain as well, because you often have to shift them around to get them in the right position after they're posed. I don't recommend it unless you have a very specific reason. I do all my other stories without Pose Player, but for The Bachelorette they're almost necessary to make the story work.

They are also useful if you make either custom content or Sims and outfits, etc. to share and you want to get easy clear photos without a lot of fussing to get your Sims to stand still for the camera.
