lol, awkward!! I love your style of writing, it is very entertaining to read.  :D So, hmmm, who's she going to choose?
Did you have much lag with all those sims in your little house? When I tried to throw a one-room party everyone took so long to get in that it was time to leave before anything else happened!

Wow maaaan... Nothing more awkward than a date like this, I think. Another romance interest came in right when you about to woo the girl, pfft... just like drama.

And who is it Olive talking with? How come she sound soo creepy?
(She is just as creepy in my game though. My male sim died the next day after trying for baby with her; it was accidental though, just like the other olive husband perhaps. I set him for brain enhancement right before repairing a broken dishwasher and left to control other sim. Suddenly I heard 'Grim Reaper music and sound effect' and see he is dead by electrocution already)
I just paused the game, saw what was happening and had to take a screenshot. I hadn't even noticed Conrad was a witch. It's funny what will happen autonomously, it's like the sims are trying to tell their own story sometimes.
Which bit is that about Olive? What a coincidence about your male sim dying!

Thank you! I'm really glad you enjoy it  :D Find out down below. About the lag, it wasn't too bad. There were a few pathing issues though, and some people just standing outside. That must have been frustrating, the tight quarters didn't allow for much interaction for me either.

Chapter Four

I’m not alone. The realisation left her poleaxed and mind reeling, an image of a vivid pink apple burned into her mind. Jadis turned to Jin Sang slowly, feeling removed, as if it was another girl who met his eyes and saw the pain before he could hide it. Their flirty conversation seemed worlds away.
“I’m sorry.” Words had never felt so inadequate.
“I understand, Jadis. I know what it’s like to feel alone.” The man raised a hand, as if to brush her cheek, but it fell to his side instead. A crooked smile he was gone, back into the mist he’d come from.

But there was someone like her in the vast, overwhelming entity they called the universe. And in light of that, she was ready to share her story just had Conrad had opened up to her. So it all spilled out; her teenage years in Sunset Valley, the bit of paper, the requirements, the immortality. What he would be bound to if he chose to step into her life. When the girl was done, well, there only seemed only one option left to show herself to him.

Conrad seemed convinced.

There was a moment of doubt, though, when she stepped back and he just stood there with a stupefied expression. The moment passed quickly enough when he grabbed her hands and gave a strong pull. Jadis’ legs became jelly.

When they finally broke apart, Jadis smiled, eyes sparkling.
“Are you with me in this?”
“I wouldn’t settle for anything else.”
“Then follow me.”
She took his hand and led him across the lot, feet skidding across the damp grass as they approached the water’s edge. The dark, tranquil surroundings - that now felt more familiar than glittering golden sunshine - calmed the girl’s mind and gave a measure of confidence as she brought them to a halt a stone’s throw from the foundations of an old pier.
“I’ve been waking up these last few days wondering what I’m doing. Why I’m here. Why I’m devoting my life and the lives of two others to it. Sometimes Olive looks at me with this unreadable expression, and I think what I’m doing is insane. It is insane.” Jadis paused and took a breath.
“I’ve said what you’ll be committing to if you want to be with me. And I’ll understand exactly if you don’t want that. But when you conjured that apple, I just knew that whatever lies in store for me, I want us to face it together.” She dropped to one knee in the cold but yielding sand.
“I want you to marry me, if you’re willing.”

Clear grey eyes met pink as a smile tugged at the man’s lips.
“I got no sleep last night daydreaming of your face when it lights up. I’d say that this is all just a dream, but it’s too cold for a fantasy and what I’m feeling at the moment can’t be felt by pretending. I’ve never believed in soul mates, but if they did exist I think we’d come pretty close. Jadis, I was willing to marry you when you walked onto my porch.”

Jadis’ only response was to smile wider as she slid the ring onto his finger. Her new fiance tugged her up and they hugged tightly, eyes squeezed shut.

It was Conrad who pulled away first, brushing a loose strand of pale hair off the girl’s face as he stepped back.
“Jadis, let’s get married now.”
“I was hoping you’d say that.”
Towering dark hills and the endless shadow of water surrounding the pair provided a bleak yet beautiful setting as they exchanged rings and spoke their vows.

And for just a moment, forgetting about her garden, forgetting about Olive and portraits and property, Jadis could pretend that they were truly alone in that daunting expanse of land.

Chapter Four

The small part of Jadis that managed to notice her arrival back home came to the conclusion that Midnight Hollow boasted the most efficient builders around.

Olive only gave a small, knowing smile in response to the profound thanks of the newlyweds as she jiggled Nervous gently on her hip. The house may have smelled of wet paint and had the odd nail lying around, but the girl decided it was more than worth it for the luxury of privacy.

Two plaster walls away, the pair were settling down on fresh sheets and the new, heavily embroidered quilt, oblivious to Nervous’ soft words and his mother’s equally hushed replies.

“Someone’s gone to a lot of trouble to arrange all this bedding and set,” Conrad shrewdly pointed out, “so we may as well give it some use.” Jadis’ amused, weary chuckle escalated into a full-throated laugh that had her shaking the bed, tears gathering at the corners of bloodshot eyes. The man eventually realised that the only way to shut her up was to kiss her.

Olive, settling down at the scratched old bistro table she’d found, wasn’t quite so oblivious.

Working her way through a soggy, re-heated toastie, the woman’s chewing was drowned out by a cacophony of zombie moans and a faint cherubic soundtrack from down the hall.

By the time Olive had slid into her new sheets, a deep red was blossoming over the sky and the only one awake, giggling and rocking himself gently in a prison of upholstery, was Nervous.

Even he passed out eventually. Despite the boy’s best intentions, tiredness overcame the desire of staying awake until his birthday.

When the adults finally roused themselves around noon, it was Conrad who went to fetch Nervous from his cot.

And set him in front of the xylophone as the two helpers worked side by side for the first time in companionable silence. Conrad fumbled slightly with the awkward tools and foreign media - a computer keyboard and Word processor was more his forte - but after realising Olive paid no attention to his bumbling mistakes, even when he dropped the chisel, it was easier to persevere.

Jadis was on her way to the grocery store in search of something to plant in that black, fertile ground, humming softly as the broom bounced around and her hair was teased out of its braid by fickle, breezy fingers.

But after arriving back home, dumping her reusable cloth bag by the garden gate and spilling melons, apples and bananas over the grass, the girl was forced to reflect unhappily that the ride had been perhaps a little too bouncy.

And conceal her nausea when they gathered in front of the cheap, tacky cake that she’d found sitting on a marked down shelf in the grocery store.

She’d managed to find some noisemakers, even if they were sold out of party hats, and Olive had shot her a grateful look for the effort. Besides, it gave her something to hide behind as the girl pretended not to notice her friend brush away a tear after setting her son on the waxy wooden floor.

Nervous was big enough to sit at the table with them and make conversation over cake, even if his feet dangled well above the floorboards.
“Thank you for the cake, Jadis.”
“You’re welcome,” the girl replied, mind flashing back to a toddler in her awkward grip, politely reacting to a nervous tickle. “You’re going to pick out some new clothes now?”
“After my second helping. I think there are a few things in the drawers that Mother picked up yesterday.”
It would be nice, she mused, having a child around the house. Jadis glanced up and her eyes met Conrad’s. There was an almost implacable expression on his face that she hadn’t seen before, but with Nervous sitting between them, it was easy to read. Her mouthful of stale chocolate sponge stuck in a suddenly dry throat.

She reached the bathroom in time, kneeling over the toilet bowl and holding back her hair with shaky hands. Conrad had looked at Nervous and seen the children they could have one day. Jadis had known that a heir was part of the requirements, but panic set in as the realization dawned and a hand slid over the black silk of her top to rest on her belly. Wasn’t a parent’s life supposed to be in order before having a baby?

A hesitant knock broke through that train of thought, so she smoothed her hair and eased the door open. Nervous stood there in a new t-shirt, pants and apron with a comb in one hand and some scissors in the other.
“Would you be able to cut my hair? Mother’s busy painting.”
“No problem. Stand in front of the sink. I’ll grab a towel.”

It soothed her frazzled mind, and once every coal black hair was in place, Nervous stood in front of the mirror of her bedroom dresser with a tentative smile.
“It suits you, buddy.”
“Thanks.” He hitched up his glasses. Olive had insisted on them after looking in seeing her son squinting out the window.
“Ready for school tomorrow?”
“Do you think the other kids will like me?” He looked up at her earnestly. In Sunset Valley, he would have been a bit of an oddity, uninterested in running around outside to get covered in water and mud or race up into splinter-filled tree houses. Midnight Hollow, though, seemed different. Maybe there would be no pushing in the halls, no whispered name-calling.
“Yeah. I think they will.” She smiled, and he gave a small one in return. Maybe she was okay with kids.

What a gorgeous snap of Nervous blowing out his candles, cute as a button! Great update as usual  :D I love your use of patterns on the wallpaper and clothes etc. I normally go for very plain colours so it's nice to see something different.

1. The house looks awesome! Especially the exterior.

2. I love your use of adjectives.

3. Nervous is cute! I remember that he looked a little more odd in TS2. I hope Jadis is right about him fitting in with the other kids in Midnight Hollow.

That's lovely of you to say! It is pretty cute when they lean forward and huff and puff at the two little candles. I think some of the wallpapers were from the Store. I always used to go for default coloured outfits, but lately found it's pretty fun re-colouring to suit their tastes and styles.

Thank you! I'm slowly progressing from the box stage. Writing this is a bit of a change, and I'm glad people like it. And you're right about Nervous in Strangetown, it's great to see him grow up in TS3 with unique genes without looking too odd.

Chapter Six

Hazy moonlight filtered through the window as Jadis lurched out of bed, fumbling for the light switch. It was only after the pads of both feet touched the cold lacquered floor that she felt it. A small, almost inconceivable movement in the slight swell of her belly, the type that could easily be mistaken for the flex of a swarm of insistent butterflies. They’d been rather persistent as of late as she held off telling Conrad, shying away slightly when he enfolded her in the night and hoping he’d put down the change to an increased laziness about exercise. She’d tried to get to the bathroom only when his chisel gnawed away at the daunting blocks of clay, but his worried concern later made her stomach churn again with guilt. It wasn’t that he’d be unhappy - quite the opposite, based on the hints he dropped - but it was all simply too soon, and for a moment, the sweetly decorated walls blurred into a haze.
A second, more forceful kick brought a glazed, slightly incredulous smile onto the girl’s face.

But when she finally drifted into a tangled web of bizarre dreams and Conrad rolled closer, her unconscious embraced the comfort, though complete oblivion was elusive.

Morning brought a pensive Nervous over his multigrain toast and thin spread of strawberry jam. He was quiet through a goodbye hug from Olive and slipped out the double doors to board the school bus with a furrowed look on his brows.

Jadis watched him go, surrounded by pungent herbs and waving with a hand encrusted with compost. She knelt back down feeling strange and wondering if it would be her child on those red vinyl seats in the next few years as the bus jerked into movement and rolled down the road. At least he had his own space now, the girl reassured herself. A bolthole, if you will.
They’d spent an afternoon working on the room, dripping wallpaper paste over the sheets thrown haphazardly over the floor. It had been worth it to see the look in Nervous’ eyes as he walked into the tiny den of his new room.

Olive had found some old pieces of furniture around town and even if the bed creaked whenever someone hauled themselves up the ladder or the odds and ends that filled the costume box were found at a garage sale, Nervous was happy pottering at the little oven or fussing with his mother’s paints at the easel.
“That is what you picked out the apron for, Nerv?” Olive had asked, that same furrow of the brow settling on her forehead.
“So I won’t get all covered in paint,” the boy had explained, and the furrow cleared.

By nightfall, they’d had four steaming little plates at the table and Nervous bashfully answering queries of flavors through a mouthful of warm vanilla muffin as Conrad swiped a snack with dusty hands or Jadis dropped down at the table smelling of tea tree soap and an underlying hint of fertilizer.

Olive had tucked him in that night.
“Mind your head.”
“S’allright, Mother. Nice and warm up here,” came his reply.
“That’s because heat rises.”
“Why?”
The woman had sighed internally.

“Well, the atoms of warmer particles… you might learn about it at school, who knows. I won’t spoil it for you.”
“Okay. Night, Mother.”
“Night, darling. Sweet dreams.” She had blown him a kiss and before ducking out of the tiny room, flicking off the wall light and leaving the door a little ajar, knowing that he worried and huddled down deep under his blankets when left in complete darkness.
Jadis jolted back to the present as her boot caught the sprinkler switch and doused her with a spray of grey water. Ducking under the next sweep, she flicked it back and knelt once more in the moistened earth.

Conrad had made no comment when she’d cast off her tight frilly skirt and stiff oriental top, instead finding a pair of stretchy leggings and a black polyester tunic. She’d kept the boots, comfort for slightly swollen feet, but the girl knew his eyes watched from beneath long lashes used to conceal worry.

He doggedly persisted with the sculpting, despite his knowledge drawn solely from tacky websites, and made a toy box for ‘Prince Nervous’.

Perhaps it had been a hint for her, the girl worried as she eased out a straggly weed. Or maybe that was excessive paranoia. It hadn’t stopped her from freaking out one night, though, when he’d left to grab a glass of water.

Her worries got relegated to the back of her mind when Jadis finally finished up and met Nervous as he called a goodbye to the driver and walked up the steps of their deck.
“So? How did it go?” Maybe she should have waited to ask, but a niggling feeling told her she’d get monosyllabic answers if a less direct method was used.
“It was okay.” The boy shrugged and dropped his gaze. “People were nice, especially Ms Stark. She does art.” He walked inside, leaving Jadis to bite her lip and follow. It didn’t sound like a total disaster, at least. Maybe she could get more out of him later. Or talk to Olive, who quietly followed him into the new room after an interval had passed.

Regardless of what may or may not have happened, he dressed up in odds and ends after homework was done to lord it over the table.

And Conrad took a break to swear fealty to the little neurotic ruler.

“I dub thee Sir Conrad,” the boy intoned, tapping him on each shoulder and once on the thick blond dreadlocks. “Serve honorably and well.”
“My life for yours, sire. Do you require an escort to your royal chamber?”
When he was answered with a gracious nod, the man stooped beside his wooden chair and settled Nervous on his shoulders. He trotted around the table and out of the room, ducking under the doorframe as the boy clung on and squealed to the clapping and laughing of the two women. Once they were gone, Jadis tiredly slumped onto a chair and copped a glance from her friend.
“You’ll have to tell him sometime.” Olive commented, not unkindly, as Jadis rested her forehead in white palms.
“I know. I know… I’m just not sure if I can handle it right now,” she replied. There was a silence, and she looked up to meet the older woman’s eyes.
“I never told Nervous’ daddy about him. I was always afraid of what might happen to my boy… so I said nothing.” Her voice was quiet. “It’s hard, though, because he doesn’t have a father. And he never will. But Nervous was the best thing that happened to me.”
Jadis nodded slowly, reached out to lay a hand on her friend’s arm. Olive clasped it and gave her a bitter smile.
“Tell him, Jadis. If there’s one thing I regret in life, it’s that Nervous might be missing something in his. Conrad will understand, I think.”

This is an ingenious way to handle children's questions, haha! Nervous makes for an adorably geeky little prince, though. Somehow, I think Jadis is worrying over nothing, but then don't we all!

I thought it was something Olive might say  :D Yeah, she's pretty neurotic like that. Too true!

She does indeed (though it is rather amusing on the third day of a pregnancy if a sim tells the father and they look absolutely shocked at the news). Thanks, I just hate those ones they automatically choose for you! Got to be comfy  ;)

Chapter Seven

After it got to the point where she was hiding in the garden at night to avoid Conrad with his gentle worry and Olive with her knowing eyes, Jadis bit her lip and packed away her tools.

Her husband was sculpting as usual in the living room. It set off a deep stab of guilt as she slipped through the doors to see him persist endlessly at something for her own ends. It didn’t stop nerves and worry mixing in with the guilt, though.

She padded over softly, watching as wooden coils emerged from the surface of that virgin block to fall on the wood underfoot. It was a while before Conrad sensed something behind and turned, black singlet coated with dark smears and a tired expression on his face.
“Are you all done out there for the night?” he asked.
“I think I could leave them for a few hours without running away,” she replied. It was a pathetic attempt at a joke, but Conrad managed a half-smile even if worry clouded his eyes.
“Jadis…” the man seemed to hesitate, but made up his mind. “Is everything okay?” He knows, the girl realised. And I was a fool to think it would go away if I pretended it wasn’t happening. When he reached forward to squeeze her hand, it was like a flood gate had been opened. Suddenly all her pent up emotions came pouring out in a torrent of jumbled language.

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I never meant… I just wanted…” the girl looked away, frustrated.  “It was all so sudden. I was married to a man I’d just met, and then I was pregnant… a few months ago, a year, my life was unimaginably different. I just couldn’t handle it. I should have told you, but I couldn’t face… I couldn’t...”
She trailed off as excitement lit his wearied face, only to be concealed a moment later. For her sake.

“What are you going to do about the child?”
“I have to keep it, if I want to do this. Her. I have to keep her,” Jadis said, almost to herself. “It’s going to be a girl.”
“And are you okay with that?”
“Yes… well, I have to be. Our girl will be born into a supportive family ready for a child. We’ll make sure of that. After all,” the girl added, with a ghost of a smile, “she’s guaranteed to have a doting father.”
“Yes,” he agreed. “Well, that’s a given.”
“Well, doting father… would you like to feel her kick?”
His eyes lit up and the man reached forward to lay gentle hands on the swell of his wife’s belly.

He couldn’t help then but draw her into an embrace, gently brushing away strands of that hair to tuck it behind an ear.

That night, her dreams were twisted and unsettled. When she was jolted out of them, it was still dark and Jadis was uneasy. Hairs on the back of her neck prickled as swollen feet touched the floor and Conrad began to stir. Ears picked up the sound of the front door creaking and closing with a clunk, followed by the slow, cautious tread of heavy boots in the living room. Three rooms away, Olive glanced through the gap in her door to see a slowly moving figure. The woman reeled back and punched three deliberate numbers into her phone.

The young woman fled with her bag as soon as the sharp sound of sirens cut through the quiet morning, taking only an Indian tapestry with her.

After the apologies of the young police officer who arrived later and a round of hot drinks, everyone was back in bed with the promise of a burglar alarm to be installed.

~

After that incident, time passed quickly, as it inevitably was wont to do. Nervous seemed to gain a measure of self confidence, though still remained quiet about school beyond giving monosyllabic answers.

Conrad seemed to field the brunt of this change, which he did with good grace - and though the worst of it came out, for days afterwards his dreadlocks remained a washed-out rose. The boy continued to hole up in his room and mess with his mother’s paints. Olive eventually gave in trying to reclaim her set and simply bought a new packet, continuing to try out different styles and conventions and incorporating everything from street art to watercolour landscapes. Jadis toiled at her plot until the girl’s hands hardened and cracked and even the snails began to fear this pale, patient giant. It became increasingly difficult to uproot oxalis around a bulging middle, but she was nothing if not persistent. And after coming across a strange egg-shaped stone around the tomatoes, she patiently washed off the grit to reveal a brilliant emerald colour beneath.

Maybe it was just those pregnancy hormones kicking in, but the girl felt an attachment to this strange object. It seemed almost capable of possessing consciousness, and sometimes the others would find her chatting to it while tending the time-consuming garden around that cumbersome bulge. Soon even polyester failed her out amongst the plants, and Jadis had to resort to a maternity bathing suit.

She remained quiet about the driving pain between her shoulder blades - they had enough pressure without being loaded with her worries. Olive made her hesitant first trip to the consignment store downtown with an armload of canvases, and was elated when they sold for a decent price.

Upon her return, the older woman found her friend beside her garden watching dumbfounded as the green stone began to tremble, and crack.

After Olive got over her initial shock, she noticed her friend's expression. For days afterwards all the woman would have to do is picture that young face and it would have her cackling away to the strange looks of the rest of the household. Soon Jadis was besotted with the little creature, especially when it proved to be helpful around the garden, and often brought it into the living room to the delighted cheers of Nervous and smiled of Conrad as the dragon swooped around the room.

But if she’d thought the backache had escaped everyone’s notice, the girl was in for a surprise. His hands worked out the bunched knots, though, and reduced her to a tranquil, quivering heap.

And the days began to fly by even faster as they all fell into a routine and her second trimester wore into the third. It was usually enough to see Conrad working away at the sculpting station or standing in the nursery, lost in thought, to dispel any lingering doubts.
Her world of plants and earth was bordered by the chipping of Conrad’s chisel, the stroke of Olive’s brush, the happy shouts of Nervous playing an imaginary racing game on the couch. It was completed by the long cuddles at night and hours of muted discussion, or just periods of silence in each other’s company. Their arguments faded in importance, the swollen feet seemed distant, the attack of parasites on her plants didn’t dent her tranquil state. But she knew the almost static time couldn't last.

She was right. One night, alone in that tangle of sheets and blankets, the pain hit.

I've realized I made a silly mistake that falls under exiting without saving - next time I think I'll play a while ahead. Thanks so much for reading and making the effort to comment. For the record, Jadis had beautiful twin girls:

Eowyn, the heir,

and Lyra.

Could this be moved to the graveyard, please.
