A Path to Answers: The Player Dynasty - Graveyard please

Prologue

The girl let out a muffled groan as she sank into the lumpy red cushions, face resting in the palms of small white hands. The hard corner of the book she’d brought to read dug into her leg, so she yanked it out and flipped the cover of the leather bound blue book open to reveal a dirty, dog-eared scrap of writing. She’d read it a thousand times before, but now, as the train let out a sharp whistle and began to gain momentum, she needed the reassurance.

Thoughts swarmed like angry bees, each more insistent than the last. Questions, more like. What in the name of the Watcher had possessed her when she decided to leave everything she’d ever known for a scrap of paper found in the middle of an ancient philosophy book? Because you want answers, a voice whispered in her head, and the girl sank down further. The other passenger gave her funny look. Cautious, she tilted the book so he wouldn’t have a chance to see the paper.
A pair of pink eyes scanned that scrap of paper hungrily. Young adult… portrait of each life stage… life fruit… eight generations...immortality. It was only a few months ago the idea of immortality would have revolted her. But now everything was different. The girl frowned and shut the book with a snap, sliding it under the seat.

All she had now was the paper and book, her day old diploma, her broom, and the savings she’d accumulated by beeping groceries at EverFresh Delights Supermarket. The thought of starting fresh was tantalizing. A new town, new start, new memories to make, and an inconceivable challenge ahead of her. It was insane - why she chose to believe the outlandish claims of a philosopher long dead - but yet… she’d always known she was different. The albinism hadn’t made such a big difference at primary school, but in Year Ten when Stiles McGraw discovered the White Witch of Narnia was also called Jadis, the nickname stuck.

Hours flashed by as the bright green foliage melted into dense, dark forest. The other passenger got off. When they cut through a valley, gloomy hills towering to either side, the girl knew they were close. Then the towering hills were behind them and the train was pulling into a station. The girl stood up and walked out of the compartment without bothering to look at the station’s sign through the window. After collecting her broom from the luggage compartment, she hopped on and flew through the little town, stopping only when she reached a broad expanse of land with a blaring ‘For Sale’ sign hammered in.

This was what the bit of paper said she would need. The girl let out her breath and allowed herself to take in her surroundings - the black skeleton trees, the dull grass, the red light that seeped everything.

The White Witch, for once in her life, belonged.

Mmmm... black trees, red light seeping in everywhere... you're setting this in Midnight Hollows, aren't you? I would love to try the town but alas, I need the $$$ for it.  :'(

I can't to see a story going on in Midnight Hollows. Good luck! ^_^
I play The Sims 4 for fun, so I don't care if I never end up being interviewed for the Dynasty Hall of Fame; people who play for keeps burn out too easily and don't enjoy playing the games, so I am going to not sweat the details.

Midnight Hollow is a stunning town, my graphics don't do it justice. Hopefully you'll be able to give it a try sometime. Thank you for the kind words!

Beautifully written. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you, that's really encouraging.

I'm just in the process of writing the next update, it should be out in the next few days  :)

Welcome!  Really loving the start to your story!
Thanks so much!

Chapter One

“True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing.”
-Socrates

Jadis Player bit her lip, dwarfed by the broad expanse of dense, dark green springy grass unique to Midnight Hollow. Intimidation came easily when you were surrounded by an unknown town with unfamiliar people - she’d never been outside Sunset Valley before. The wardrobe that she’d spent hours scouring dusty op shops to collate, however, gave a small measure confidence. Within the richly embroidered chinese-style top, cute frilly black skirt, quirky tartan tights and lurid yellow ‘don’t-mess-with-me’ military boots, she felt like a whole new person. The earrings themselves had a story of their own.

It wasn’t so much the people that scared Jadis, but herself. Absently she pulled out a varnished teak wand and conjured a plumbob, head snapping up to check for bystanders as she realised what she’d done. Back in Sunset Valley, most residents would have withdrawn or given her strange looks.

Nevertheless, Jadis couldn’t conceal a smile as she tucked the wand away and hopped on her broom once more to begin exploring the town. No-one stared as the pale girl flew past on irregular puffs of sparkles and smoke.

Exquisite Victorian architecture appeared out of the red-tinted mist as she rode past, boasting haunted-looking vegetation and gothic decoration. It was funny, Jadis would often muse later, that the building she was first drawn to was the towering indoor pool, despite never much being one for swimming.

Maybe because it was so different to Le Petit Shark Pool Centre, or maybe because lively shouts and squeals permeated the sullen grey bricks that echoed the atmosphere of the rest of the town. Whatever her reasons, the Sombre household currently enjoying the facilities seemed friendly, if curious about the slight, quirky girl that no-one knew.

Amid the blatantly familiar smell of chlorine, Jin Sang Kim seemed especially welcoming. The older man, who was so different to the conventional, conservative men back home, had Jadis instantly entranced and blushing as she fumbled words for an introduction.
“Who might you be, this stranger girl who’s set the town alight with gossip?” He must be teasing me! Despite the blush, Jadis responded with an arched eyebrow and a tart reply.
“Do you use that line to every new arrival?”
“Oh no,” he replied fervently, eyes dancing, “just to the beautiful ones.”
“And end up breaking their hearts. I’m Jadis.”
“Jadis…?” The tone was questioning. Ah well, in for a penny, in for a pound.
“Last names can be dangerous, Mr Tease.” He laughed, and they were instant friends. They chatted for a while, but Jadis left afterwards, with the excuse that she hadn’t even begun to explore Midnight Hollow and it was already time for lunch. She got a wink and a whispered goodbye from Nadia, a bandmate;
“He very rarely flirts with women, he must like you!”

Her next encounter with the locals was with none other than Olive Specter and her quiet little boy Nervous Subject. Olive, somewhat a local celebrity, had caught Jadis starting at the bleak, haunted beauty of Pitch Park.
“It kind of takes your breath away, the first time you see it.” Olive commented. The girl looked up, startled, then nodded.
“There’s just nothing like it back home.”
“Forgive me if this is too nosy, but where might that be?”
“Sunset Valley.”
“Ah, I see. Welcome to the Hollow.”

“Thank you. Who’s this little man?” Nervous was introduced, and the women belatedly exchanged their own names. The conversation evolved from there. Engrossed, they talked about various topics as dusk fell and Nervous started squirming. Jadis was fascinated by the older woman - she seemed to have so many stories to tell. It wasn’t until true darkness began to ensconce the town that Olive broached the subject of where the girl was staying.
“Um, it’s not much at the moment. I don’t have the funds yet for building.” Olive suggested they have a look, and hailed a taxi. Jadis manouvered her broom into the boot and climbed in.

Heart in her mouth, the girl climbed out of the bright yellow taxi, absentmindedly noticing that it stuck out like a sore thumb in the gloom of her new home. Olive followed, her expression unreadable as she surveyed the broad expanse that lay before them. Minutes trickled slowly by as crickets chirped in the smothering night. Finally, she turned and studied Jadis.

“Don’t give me a see-through lie, girl. Why did you come here?”

She's not a husband, so hopefully she'll be safe  ;) Olive does seem to have a softer, benevolent side, though.

Chapter Two

It was impossible to get to sleep that night. Replays of conversations that day reduced Jadis to silently punching her pillow in frustration and her bed to a colourful mess of blankets. Really, she should be grateful she actually had a bed to sleep in that night, when she’d been psyching herself up for an uncomfortable night with just a sleeping bag between herself and the cold, hard ground.

She’d given Olive an abridged version of her desire for immortality and the requirements to attain it. That had seemed to satisfy the older woman without going into her reasons behind it, but those rich brown eyes had seemed knowing when Jadis had quickly glazed over finding the challenge scrawled on a scrap of paper in ‘some old book’. When the girl had finished, Olive announced that she would move in to help with the requirements, brushing away Jadis’ arguments like one would a fly.
“Nonsense. When I’m gone, it means Nervous won’t be alone.” And that was that.

Olive never did let on to Jadis exactly how she’d arranged for a small prefab to be delivered at eleven o’clock on a Sunday night. When they’d walked inside, she’d simply handed Nervous to the girl before turning to the fridge and pulling out the limited selection of vegetables.

Jadis, who’d never held a baby before, gripped the boy as if he was glass.

“What do I do?!”
“You’ve never held a baby before? Oh, just tickle him a little,” Olive had called back, a smile in her voice.
So she’d shifted the infant onto her hip and held her free arm out in a claw shape. It hadn’t been too hard to project a terrified expression onto her face, but she had a sneaking suspicion that Nervous was just playing along to make her feel better.

Regardless, she’d been grateful to tuck him in the baby swing and sit down to salad with her new housemate. Or more accurately, for one of them to sit down. Olive had politely declined the offer of the toilet.

From there Jadis had simply fallen into the unbelievably soft bed, propped up on one elbow as she sleepily watched Olive change Nervous into his onesie and tuck him into his cot.

The lethargy had vanished, though, as soon as she’d switched off the cheap bare bulb that had flooded the room with light. It was hours before she finally drifted off.

When morning inevitably came, her braid was a matted mess and sleep weighted Jadis’ eyes. Faint snores drifted from the other side of the room as she slipped on yesterday’s clothes and carefully finger combed her hair before twisting it back into her usual style.

Cat-quiet, she tiptoed out and set off for the library, which was deserted at the early hour.

The girl located a book on gardening - she’d always liked pottering in the garden back in Sunset Valley, relishing the feeling of sitting down to a meal with organic, home grown vegetables - and settled down in a comfortable armchair as Olive stirred at home.

Nervous seemed happy to amuse himself as his mother muttered at the easel, trying out paints for the first time since high school.

Even Jadis, with her limited childcare experience, noted what a remarkably quiet and resourceful toddler he was upon her return from a morning spent with her nose in books and an afternoon filling out paperwork at the City Hall for her new profession as a gardener.

It was worth it for the knowledge that she was actually employed and had made a start on the daunting tasks ahead. After another cold salad and another restless night, the girl woke with the realisation that time was ticking by and that further help would be needed soon. She left Olive painting and Nervous happily sipping a bottle of formula, determined to meet more locals.

The Lonely Literary Café was lonely indeed. Karl Simon and his flatmates left as soon as they had introduced themselves, leaving Jadis with a pile of unshelved books and a disgruntled expression.

Roderick Synapse seemed nice enough. It wasn’t until Jadis had raised the question of his household, after an hour of enjoyable conversation, that she discovered he was an insane megalomaniac.
Despairing, she rang Olive.

“This better be important. I’ve almost concocted the perfect shade of orange.”
“I’m not having much luck. Can you recommend someone to visit?”
“Can’t say anyone springs to mind. Look, Jadis…”
“Yes?” The desperation showed through that single syllable.
“If you want to meet people, why not throw a party?”
For a moment, the only sound was faint static.
“A party? At our place?”
“It’ll be fun. The close quarters will let everyone get to know you.”
Olive could understand her friend’s skepticism, though. The room was barely big enough for their furniture and household of three, let alone a dozen or more party goers. But the girl was desperate.
“All right. I’ll pick up some streamers on the way home. Tell them to come tomorrow at six.”

Wooot! A neurotic! Those neurotics are so fun to play with. Constantly worrying about stove or sink and get moodlet after you sent them to check it. And it's super fun after you have a bonehilda in house; mine was once already on the verge of trying for baby with his partner before he saw boney and running away all over  ;D ;D ;D .

I love neurotics, they're great to play. Maybe because I see myself in them  ;) That's hilarious! I should really get Bonehilda in this file.

Chapter Three

“Are you lost, miss?” The voice, young and mellow, came from the porch of a small house across the street. Jadis started and looked at the young man who’d caught her attention. He was tall, well-muscled and around her age. It would be rude not to go across and introduce myself, Jadis told herself, crossing the road and climbing the few steps in front of his porch.

“I was just lost in thought for a moment there. You were seeing the folly of agreeing to your friend’s suggestion of a party in a tiny shack,” Jadis explained. He smiled, and all traces of coherent thought fled her mind.
“I’ve had the same experience,” the man replied, taking her hand in a warm, comforting grip.
“I have to go, but… did you want to come? It’s, uh… tomorrow at six. We live at 95 True Terrace. Nothing fancy.”
“I’d like that.” They were silent for a moment, before the girl realised she still was gripping his hand. She dropped it and blushed, mumbling an excuse.
“I’d better get home. My plants need watering.”
“Nice meeting you. Until tomorrow.” She smiled back at him and fled the porch. It wasn’t until Jadis arrived back home that she realised she had no idea what his name was.

Olive was settling Nervous into his swing, smears of multicoloured paint up her arms.
“Do you hate me yet?”
“Hmm, I think I can live with it,” the girl replied, mind casting back to blond dreadlocks and lean muscle as a soft lullaby began to play.
“We’ll see at this time tomorrow, I guess. Goopy carbonara’s on the bench.” The woman stepped back as the boy smiled, showing new, pearly white teeth.

The morning, like so many others before, dawned bright and sunny. It didn’t do much to reassure Jadis, who freaked out at the mere thought of her plants wilting in the warmth.

Five o’clock did eventually roll around to see the first early guests arrive bearing plates piled with grilled cheese and hot dogs. The new stereo that had dried up their pathetic pool of savings played dance music, and soon as more people began to arrive - Olive’s notorious reputation seemed to help - they were packed, as Jadis had graphically imagined, like sardines in a can.

The girl hadn’t a clue how Roderick Synapse had managed to make the guest list, but Olive seemed happy to act the bouncer and let him know he wasn’t wanted.
The squash of people made it easy for Jadis to sidle up to her new friend, though, and shout an introduction through the blaring music.
“I didn’t manage to catch your name yesterday.”
“Conrad. Conrad Finley. And yours?”
“Jadis Player. Look, uh, would you like to go to Somber Beach? It’s getting pretty stuffy in here.”
“I’d love to.”
They left, incidentally the head of a stampede rushing for the door following Todd Landgraab’s ravenous cry. Grilled cheese, it seemed, wasn’t the only thing on the menu.

Cool night air embraced their skin on the short walk to the beach, a three-quarter moon alighting their way and adorning the seemingly eternal black sky above. Their casual conversation, used to get to know one another a little better, died as the pair stepped into the dark, spindly trees by the road and heard the sea whispering for the first time. Conrad turned, simply regarded the almost luminescent girl with those beautiful grey eyes of his. She stared back unflinching as her heart hammered in her ears, but he was the first to break the silence.

“I never really believed in love, or happy endings.” His voice was quiet and husky. “Yesterday, when I saw you standing on the pavement, I just had to meet you, so I said the first thing that popped into my head. You just stood there, red light glimmering off your body, and I thought, so this is what perfection looks like.
“I used to think there was only perfection in writing. Women-” he cut off abruptly, eyes sliding past the girl’s face to focus on something behind. She turned, breath catching in her throat as Jin Sang Kim materialised from the dense mist and stiffly nodded to Conrad, who nodded back. The tension was palpable. All previous attraction to the older man rushed forth unbidden to war with what she felt towards Conrad.
Jadis was wordless. Her mind shut down as rational thought was replaced by pure emotion. Lifetimes with each man stretched out ahead of her, each offering the chance to fall in love. Something that few months ago she distantly thought she’d never feel again, as her world turned grey and lost all pretence of normality.
It was in that moment, as Jadis mutely stood between two possible lives, that Conrad conjured an apple.

Wow maaaan... Nothing more awkward than a date like this, I think. Another romance interest came in right when you about to woo the girl, pfft... just like drama.

And who is it Olive talking with? How come she sound soo creepy?
(She is just as creepy in my game though. My male sim died the next day after trying for baby with her; it was accidental though, just like the other olive husband perhaps. I set him for brain enhancement right before repairing a broken dishwasher and left to control other sim. Suddenly I heard 'Grim Reaper music and sound effect' and see he is dead by electrocution already)
