I'm back! Of course, I stepped right off the plane into a crazy situation at work so I haven't had a second to really focus on anything else, but today should be the last day of that.

I have all the pics and events set for the next chapters, just need to write them out, so I am hoping to have one up tomorrow. Thanks for bearing with me, I can't wait to see what's been going on in everyone's stories while I've been gone. :)

Once the kids were settled in to their new home, they were instantly busy getting themselves started in their new adult lives. Well ... Amanda and L4z3r were busy ...

Rooney's only concern was setting up his workout gear and his chess set. Once those two tasks were accomplished, he was pretty much done as far as he was concerned. He started working out while the other two were rushing around furiously making plans and filling their calendars.

He was just about to break a sweat when he looked up to see L4z3R in the doorway.

"Dude, are you working out in the snow?"

Rooney shrugged. "There wasn't really room for this equipment in my room, so I put it out on my balcony. It's no big deal." Although, as soon as he said that he began to feel how really chilly it was outside, and he was only in a t-shirt. He made a mental note to get one of those fleece jackets for his outdoor workouts in winter.

"Listen, man ..." L4z3r said hesitantly, trying to still be casual and friendly.

"What's up, brother?"

"Were you thinking of ... getting a job ... at all? Or something to earn money? This house isn't free, ya know."

Rooney flushed a little. He had, in fact, not really been thinking of that at all. He had been thinking of working on his lats. "Um ... yeah, of course. I mean, I'm definitely gonna get a job, don't worry bro. I just have to do a little prep first. But I'll have a job soon, you'll see."

L4z3r looked skeptical, but he left Rooney alone after that. He had too many other things to do.

Like go to the symphony. The season was in full swing and he had tickets to every show, so he started attending right away, getting to know the the players and the style of music the symphony liked to play, as well as the type of guest artists they tended to invite. The more he knew about them, the more he could work out ways for someone like himself to fit in.

After a few times of attending the shows, the woman seated next to him introduced herself. She was an elegant elderly lady named Victoria Andrews, who was a season ticketholder like himself. Over time he came to learn that she was rather wealthy and a great patron of the arts. She soon discovered that L4z3r was a musician himself and immediately expressed interest in hearing him play. He didn't feel quite ready to show off his stuff yet, but he promised her that he would have her over soon, once he had practiced a bit more.

Inside, he was extremely excited about this new acquaintance. A wealthy woman who liked to support the arts ... if she liked his music, she could really help him out. Maybe his career path wouldn't be as difficult to break into as he'd first thought. He immediately went home and started practicing out on the front porch. He didn't even stop to change out of his concert clothes. He thought maybe it would be a good way to meet some of the people from the neighborhood if they happened to walk by, but he soon got so lost in the music that he lost all track of his surroundings. Someone certainly took notice of him, though ...

Meanwhile, one of Amanda's first tasks was learning how to cook. None of the kids had ever learned how to cook beyond microwaving some hot dogs or soup and it was going to be one of the big challenges in their new home. She had kind of been hoping Rooney would take on that task, since both she and L4z3r were busy working on career plans, but he showed no signs of movement toward the kitchen on that first morning, so Amanda tried her best to make everyone some waffles. They were a little ... okay, they were very burnt, but still, at least she got something on the table before she had to rush off to her first day on the job.

She was really nervous when she set out for her first day of real work after training, but she soon found that she loved it. Her job required her to meet with different police contacts throughout the city on an undercover basis, so most of her day was spent walking around town pretending to be a young adult out for a day of shopping and activities. She would stop at designated meetup points and collect information from her contacts.

As a low level contact, she was mostly meeting up with local business owners who would report any information they had on petty crimes like vandalism, shoplifting or drug dealing locations. Then she would return to the office and input the information she had received into their database. It was a bit boring, but there was always the chance that some piece of info would fit into a larger puzzle and help to solve a big case. It was a small chance, but on her way home at night she would daydream about her big break.

Her free time was spent mostly at the gym. If she hoped to get promoted, she needed to be in good shape. There were other requirements too, of course, but this one was the easiest for her to tackle. Since VF-23 was on her own now, Amanda offered to train with her. That way they could keep in touch, VF-23 would get out on the town, and she would get in shape. Her aunt only accepted this offer grudgingly, but secretly VF-23 was happy her niece wanted to spend time with her. It was a bit lonely in that big house by herself with only a ghost for company, and she knew that a lot of young adults weren't that great at staying in touch with their family.

As they ran, they traded gossip and news about the family. VF-23 was relentless about trying to find out about the kids' relationships.

"Honestly, auntie," she explained, "We haven't had time to start getting in relationships. There's been so much to do getting our house ready and getting started with our jobs."

"Oh, did Rooney find a job, then?"

"Well, no ... not him. But he's spent most of his time working out. I'm sure he'll be the first of us to find someone, though. He not as picky as me and L. But tell me something ... why did everyone move out, really? Dad won't really talk about it, he's kind of cagy when I bring it up."

VF-23 looked a little embarrassed. "Oh it's just ... well you'll understand after a while. The three of us siblings have been living together all our lives and it just gets really ... cramped. The things that annoy you start to become huge. I never really could stand the way your mom would blast her stereo at all hours, for instance. And it was always really awkward when your Aunt Ruby and Uncle Nicholas would be fighting. And as for me, well ... I never really learned how to socially appropriate so I'm always saying the wrong thing to someone or other. But what really tipped the balance was the ghost, I think."

VF-23 sighed.

"He comes out all the time and that's the way I like it. But no one else could ever get comfortable inside the house with him popping up unexpectedly. And Nicholas always freaked out so much he practically had a panic attack. They were really getting on my case to bury him in a proper grave, but I just couldn't do it. I think it was getting to the point where they were going to insist that I take him and leave then, but then Ruby got pregnant again, and weirdly, so did Max and I think they all decided to try raising their kids in their own home this time."

Amanda thought her aunt looked a little sad, but at the same time, it was probably a relief to have time to herself any time she wanted it. Amanda had a hard time knowing what to feel about it. She was kind of jealous at her half-brother getting to grow up in a home with just their parents, but she couldn't even really imagine what that would be like. It seemed a bit lonely to her, now that she thought about it.

Aw, I'm not sure how I feel about Rooney at this point. I know this is likely going to come to a head about him not going after a job - personally, the criminal career might be good for him, considering it requires both logic AND athletics (and doesn't require you to write reports - blech!). It also helps pay bills, which is always a plus when you have roomies.

Haha yeah ... Rooney is the different one. He's a bit of a character. He definitely has a lot more issues than the others, which will be an ongoing problem for him, but I have kind of a soft spot for him. He's more of a screw-up than a deliberately bad person. He wants to do the right thing, he just ... doesn't. Ever. I always like the goofs and the other two are fairly high achievers so it's nice to have someone different.

But yeah ... he's definitely going to be the black sheep of the family for this generation. I don't think he's going to end up in a regular career path, since his lifetime wish doesn't require it and the other two are going that route, but he will find ways to contribute ... when he has to. ;)

The Greythorn Lifetime Wish Project - Gen. 3, Part 2 - Romance
« Reply #51 on: April 13, 2014, 03:36:50 AM »
When L4z3r wasn't at the symphony, he made money by playing his guitar for tips in town. With his years of practice, he was already good enough to make a pretty nice amount of tips if he parked himself in a well-trafficked area. He usually didn't pay much attention to the people who made up his audience. They were different every day and most only stayed for a song or two. But one day he realized that a young woman who was watching him had also been there the day before, and the day before that.

After his second song, she put a tip in his guitar case, but rather than moving on like most people did, she stayed. For song after song she stayed, watching with rapt attention and swaying gently to the music. When he was finally packing up for the day, she started to walk away, but he took a chance and called out to her.

"Hey," he said, "I noticed you were here yesterday too. What's your name? I'm L4z3R."

She blushed slightly. "Oh ... haha ..." she laughed a bit, nervously. "Yeah, I'm a bit of a fan of yours. My name is Toni. I actually ... well, I actually live not too far from you. I was jogging by your place one day and I saw you playing on your porch. You sounded great, and then when I was downtown buying a book I heard you again. I could tell it was you from the way you were playing. And, well ... I don't have a regular job yet, so I run a lot of errands for my parents' business to make some cash. So I'm out here a lot and I always kind of keep an ear out."

"Wow," L4z3r said, flattered, "My first real fan." He couldn't help noticing that she was very pretty in exactly the way he liked. A sweet, girl-next-door kind of look. He decided to take a chance. "Listen ... it's pretty cold out today and you've stood out here for a while listening to me. Can I treat you to a cup of coffee or tea as a reward for being my very first fan?"

She giggled again. "Yeah, that would be great actually," she replied, blushing a bit more. So they set off for the bistro to warm up and get to know each other.

*************************

Meanwhile, Amanda was starting work on her most exciting case yet. When questioning a small time drug dealer, the station had learned that someone was supplying performance enhancing drugs to the local athletes and sports teams. If this was true, it would mean a huge scandal, so the department had to act fast to try to find out who was behind it. If it turned into a media scandal first, then the perpetrators would cut and run and it would be extremely hard to find them at that point.

Amanda had been assigned a contact, a minor league benchwarmer who was willing to work with the police. He was going to keep an eye out and report on anything that seemed suspicious as well as any activity he actually witnessed. As someone who was currently at the beginning of his career and not seeing a lot of playtime, he was also a prime target to be approached for a deal, which would be a major score.

As Amanda caught sight of her contact and approached, she had to stop and catch her breath for a second. He was hot. She reminded herself of what she was doing there. This was a job, not a date. Well, sort of ... their cover was a blind date but that made it even more important not to go overboard. She squared her shoulders and approached her contact.

"Mr. Pritchett?" she asked, in what she hoped was a professional manner, "My name is Amanda Greythorn. I'm your ... date."

The young man took her in, and as his eyes traveled up the length of her tall, slender body a smile grew on his face. "This is not going to be nearly as bad as I thought. Well, come on then darlin', let's get acquainted over a cup of coffee." He grinned and offered her his arm.

She sighed and took it. "Look," she said, "Don't get carried away. I'm pretending to be your date, but it's not a date, it's a job, so let's keep it as professional as we can." But her cheeks were burning hot. Hopefully he wouldn't notice.

He looked at her and winked. "Of course, darlin', I'm always professional."

"Where did you come from?!" she sighed, exasperated. She'd never met anyone who talked like this in their life. It was a rhetorical question, but he answered it.

"I'm from down south. Things are a little more laid back and looser down there. Just tell me if I'm bein' too familiar, darlin'"

"It's fine," she said, as they approached the diner. To tell the truth, it was growing on her a little.

"Great. After you then, m'lady," he bowed as he held the door open for her.

**********************

While Amanda was on her fake date, L4z3r was having an AMAZING first date. He and Toni had hit it off in every way. She was a quiet, sweet girl. She had grown up the only child of wealthy parents, but it hadn't spoiled her at all. They had taught her the value of hard work and the importance of helping others and she had grown into an industrious and generous young woman. The one thing her parents hadn't passed on, unfortunately, was their ambition. She wanted nothing more than to be a wife and mother and pour her efforts into making a wonderful household.

L4z3r didn't mind that though, he was ambitious enough for two and after his unconventional upbringing, he was pretty attracted to a woman with old-fashioned values. Their date took them from coffee to dinner and then sharing a dessert. They couldn't believe it when they looked around and realized it was dark outside.

"Oh geez, I have to get going," Toni cried, "My parents will be wondering where I am! Listen, I had a really great time with you though. I really hope that we can-"

L4z3r couldn't help it. He had to kiss her before she slipped away. He knew he couldn't get away with that with just any girl, but he had a feeling that this classic romance movie maneuver would be okay with her. And it obviously was ... rather than pulling away she drew closer and returned his kiss for a glorious moment.

When they pulled apart, she had a hard time finishing her train of thought. "I ... uh ... um ... I hope ..."

"That we can see each other again? Me too ... I hope we'll be seeing each other again really soon. I've got your number now, so I'll definitely call you."
****************************

Back at the diner, Amanda and her contact, Curtis had concluded their business. He had given her a list of names of the guys on the team who were most likely to be using performance enhancing drugs, and descriptions of any person he had seen having contact with players and/or coaches who wasn't a part of the team organization. She thanked him and shook his hand then he walked her out. She was saying goodbye when he suddenly took her hands.

"Listen, darlin'," he said softly, "I know this wasn't a real date, but I had a real good time anyway. I just ... you're the prettiest girl I've met in this town and I can't help gettin' a little flirty, but that's just the way I am. I don't mean anything by it. Well, I mean I do ... but ... you just tell me to stop any time I make you feel uncomfortable. I just go into a certain ... mode around a pretty woman, especially in this date scenario."

Amanda looked at him for a while. Despite the fact that this was a job and they had remained relatively professional while playing their roles, she couldn't help feeling attracted to Curtis. He was tall, athletic and self-confident and he was from somewhere else so there was something different him from anyone she'd met before. His manner and way of speaking were fresh and new to her. She looked down, staring at their intertwined fingers.

"I shouldn't say this," she responded softly, "But, I kind of wish it was real. It really can't be. It really, really can't. This job means everything to me and I can't screw it up. But I had as much fun with you as a real date and I just can't help but wish it had been ... that we had met under different circumstances."

"Well ..." he responded thoughtfully. "What if ... we pretend? That it's real? I mean just you and me. No one has to know. I won't say anything. It can just be ... our cover story. And then maybe ... maybe someday when this is long over, you and I will bump into each other again somewhere. And who knows, maybe then ... it can become real?"

Amanda looked into his deep brown eyes for a long moment. Then, something took her over, like she was possessed. She just started leaning forward, unable to help herself. And then ... she was kissing him.

It was just a small, shy kiss, but it was enough to make her feelings known. He grinned that big grin again and looked like he was about to do something, but then he stopped himself.

"I almost started hollerin' I got so excited, but that's no way to keep a secret. Listen, darlin' ... while you're still workin' this case I'm keepin' up appearances. I won't be callin' you or talkin' to you outside of our meetings but that's not how I really am. It's just ... if I start I know I'll be way too obvious and blow our cover. I want to keep this secret for you ... but I'm so glad you like me too."

Amanda gave a coy smile and then snapped out of it. "I really had better go now. Cops come here all the time during their night shifts to grab a coffee so the longer we stay, the more likely someone will see us."

"Of course, darlin', I'll be on my way now, but I hope our next meeting is soon!" He winked and then hailed a cab for her with a piercing whistle. She tried not to stare too long as she drove away but it seemed like his cheeky grin stayed within her vision for longer than she really could have seen it.

*****************************

And what was Rooney up to while his siblings were out meeting new people? Well, he was hanging around the house as usual, practicing his chess. As he practiced, he started to think that maybe he could become a chess pro like his Aunt V. Surely there was some money to be made in that ... right?

On a whim, he registered himself for the chess tournament and was surprised when the contact information for his first opponent came through right away. It was a woman named Holly Alto. She was probably out and about, like most of the other sims in town, but he thought he'd try calling her anyway. He was getting a bit bored and lonely sitting in the house by himself, but he couldn't work up the motivation to get dressed and go out. To his surprise, she was home and agreed to come over right away.

When she got there, he could see why. She was a somewhat plain woman, although well-dressed. He couldn't really believe she was an Alto, but then again, he was nothing like his mom and dad either. She gushed when she greeted him, thanking him for calling and explaining she was so grateful to get out of the house. He shrugged and invited her up to his room where the chess board was.

She blushed to be going into a man's room, but Rooney had his back turned and missed it. They began to play, and as they played, they chatted. She was kind of a boring person, if Rooney was going to be honest, but she seemed like a nice girl. He could tell right away she'd been really stifled by her parents. He wasn't anything like her, but he did know what it felt like to want to get away from your parents sometimes. When his mom and dad were having a "down" period he would often find ways to hide away. It always made him feel sad, even when he was too little to understand why.

As they talked, he started to realize that she was attracted to him. He tried to keep it pretty neutral but as the night went on, she took everything he said as a sign of another connection with him. When their match was over (and he won!), he was prepared to politely show her out. But there was a moment of silence and he listened to the creaky old house settle in around him and realized he would still be alone if she left. So he asked her if she would like to stay for a cup of tea.

Well, of course she did and the two of them chatted lightly back and forth about their families, their lives, their dreams, etc. They didn't really know each other though, and they started to run out of things to talk about. No one else was home yet, and Rooney decided he needed to do something to keep her here. So he started to flirt. Just light touches, on her shoulder, her hands, her knee ... just to emphasize a point. He looked deep into her eyes and eventually he just said it.

"Look, Holly ... I know we've just met, but I just feel this ... connection with you. Our talk has been so great and I really just ... I really don't want you to go." He looked at her with his big puppy dog eyes and poor Holly didn't stand a chance. She had been waiting to hear those words for a long time. She was shy and had a hard time talking to men, so she hadn't had much romance in her life. It really didn't take much to win her over.

She babbled and reddened but somehow managed to convey that she'd like to stay. Rooney, seeing how flustered and inexperienced she was, realized this would be easy. He took her back to his bedroom, took her gently by the hands and pulled her close. She melted into him, sighing. He took her face in his hands with the lightest touch and looked into her eyes and told her she was beautiful. Then he pulled her in for a long, lingering kiss.

It wasn't long before they had stumbled to his bed and, well ... woohoo ensued.

To be honest, it was pretty good woohoo, even if Rooney wasn't head over heels in love. It was good enough that it put them both out like lights at the end. Rooney hadn't really intended for Holly to stay the whole night, only until someone else came home, but once they were both fast asleep it was too late. He didn't wake up until the morning sun was falling across his face, and he squinted up to see someone else in bed with him.

At first, he was so groggy he didn't understand who it was. Then he remembered. Uh oh. "Holly..." he said.

"Want some breakfast, babe?" She was all smiles.

Uh oh.

Oh no Rooney! You've led that poor woman on! Hopefully he lets her down gently if he doesn't want to be with her...
I love L4s3r and his number 1 fan! Toni looks perfect for him, like just what he needs.
I also really love how Mr. Pritchett smooth-talked his way into our dear Amanda's heart. Just like he grew on her, he's definitely growing on me.

Now if only Rooney could get his life in order, poor guy.

« Reply #54 on: April 13, 2014, 08:35:20 PM »
This is just a small interlude to show how Rooney is dealing with his romantic encounter ... or maybe, not dealing with it is a better way to describe it.

Love Plus One

"Want some breakfast, babe?" Rooney looked into Holly's glowing face and all he could think of was escape.

"What ... what time is it?"

"7:00"

Hmm, nothing he could reasonably claim to have to be at so early in the morning. Then he caught the smell of coffee wafting up from downstairs.

"Oh, looks like someone's already up. Anyway, I think I'm just going to grab a cup of coffee and then I really have to head out. I have a ... a job interview."

"Oh, great! Good luck, I'm sure you'll get it! I'll just stay for coffee then."

"Great," Rooney replied, with a weak smile.

Down in the kitchen, Amanda gave him several looks as he and Holly drank their coffees, but thank goodness for her because she kept Holly occupied with small talk so Rooney didn't have to try to think of more stuff to say to her. Once the coffee was gone, he made his escape, although he made sure to call and wait for Holly's cab first. He may have made a mistake having her spend the night, but he didn't want to be a jerk about it. He figured he would give her a call and talk to her more honestly later on.

In the meantime, he had to go somewhere, since his sister now thought that he had a job interview after Holly went on about it over breakfast. He decided to go to the library. He could hang out there for a couple of hours and read and get on the internet to actually look for some jobs.

He spent about 10 minutes going through the available jobs, but nothing really appealed to him. He flipped through a couple of logic books and then started to get a little bored. He looked around and noticed a gorgeous girl leafing through a book from the paperback rack and before he even really thought about it, he was over there introducing herself.

Her name was Darlene Bunch and she currently had a part time job delivering papers. If she finished early, she liked to come to the library and spend a little while reading. This habit was leftover from when she was young and had lived in an overcrowded house full of kids and never enough room for everyone. The library had always been her escape -- a place that was quiet and elegant and full of as many books as one could ever want.

These days, she came to the library to have some time to herself before going home to her husband. She was a newlywed and for a while it had been bliss so go from her stuffed household to something where it was just two of them. But already her husband was bugging her to try for babies and she found that even with only two people in a house, it could be still be stifling to have someone around ALL the time. Especially someone who was your partner and therefore was supposed to be able to command your attention whenever they wanted. Sometimes, she just wanted to be by herself.

So when Rooney approached her during her alone time, she was annoyed at first. She kept her responses short and clipped and brushed him off by explaining that she was married.

"Of course you're married ... the good ones always are," he sighed. "But if you're married, where's your husband?" He looked around, pretending to be confused.

"We don't have to always be together."

"True," he said, "everyone needs their space sometimes."

"Yeah," she said, suddenly really looking at him for the first time. "I'm so glad you get it. My husband seems to think we should want to be together all the time, but I need my 'me time.'"

She studied the young man across from her. He had rumpled hair and wrinkled clothes. Not the type she would ever go for in a million years, although she had to admit his big, sad brown eyes had something lovable in them. But he seemed pretty safe, overall. No harm talking to him, anyway.

"Look," he said, "The last thing I want to do is cut into your private time so feel free to say no to this, but I was gonna go grab some lunch at the cafe. I wouldn't even ask, but you seem like you have some stuff you need to vent about and maybe talking to a stranger would help. I don't know your husband or anything, I don't even know who he is! So nothing you say would leave our table."

She thought about it for a second. It WAS her private time. But this guy was right. She did need to vent about this stuff to someone who wouldn't spread it back to her man. It wasn't that she was unhappy in her marriage. It's just ... sometimes stuff builds up and if she didn't let it out, she was in danger of becoming unhappy.

"You talked me into it. I'll go, but first we have to introduce ourselves. I'm Darlene."

"Rooney. Follow me, I know a place with great sandwiches."

They took an outdoor seat and settled in to lunch. Rooney got a grilled cheese sandwich and bacon with fries, while Darlene stuck to a salad with farmer's market vegetables and a glass of nectar. He listened to her talk about her issues as a newlywed and he confided to her his own fear of commitment after growing up so close to his parents' troubled marriage.

"I'd like to meet someone," he said earnestly, "I really would, but everytime I start to get close with someone I get scared and mess it up."

As they talked, something started to happen to Darlene. A combination of the nectar and Rooney's bumbling earnestness started to get to her. She started to feel better about herself and sorry for him. After all, she had someone, didn't she? She also started to feel ... attracted to him. In her nectar-scrambled mind it didn't seem like it would be such a terrible thing to have a little fling with him. It would be a sort of vacation from her marriage issues for her and a commitment-free affair for him.

Next thing she knew they were in a hidden alley way, headed for a kiss.

Suddenly, reality seemed to hit them both at the same time and they both shied away.

"I really can't do this to my husband," she said, in despair. "I can't believe I even got this far."

"And I really can't do this to YOU," he responded. "You've been such a good friend today, and this is how I repay you?! I really am a mess ... I think ... I think my brother and sister will probably end up kicking me out," he finished softly.

She looked at him with pity in her eyes, but didn't touch him. "Listen," she told him forcefully, "You'll be okay. Really, you will. You just need to grow up. I have a feeling that since you were the baby of the house, everyone treated you like that for much longer than they should have and you never really learned how to transition to adult life. It was gonna be like that for my little brother, but I used some tough love on my mom and dad to make them understand he needed to learn how to take responsibility."

"You're probably right," he said miserably, "But what do I do about it now? I can't seem to do anything right. I don't have a clue how to begin fixing myself."

"It's gonna be slow going. But you're gonna have to teach yourself. Don't hold yourself up to your brother and sister's standards. You're going to take a different path, and it might be slower than other people's, but you'll get it in the end. Don't worry about doing the normal thing and finding a career and a partner. For now, start small. Do whatever you can to make money, even it's just an odd job or a one-time thing. Eventually, something will click and you'll start to see your path. Don't try to start dating right now, either. Make friends, that's all. Maybe, one day, one of the those friendships will turn into something more. Maybe not ... but don't worry about that right now. Keep your eyes on your own feet and take it one step at a time."

Rooney looked at her in wonder. "How do you know so much?"

She couldn't help but laugh at that. "I'm an older sister. You get to know a lot when you have a family as big as mine cramped into a space with no room for privacy." Huh ... maybe there was an upside to that after all, she thought. "And it's not like I have it all figured out for myself. I mean, obviously I ended up here with you and that wasn't the smartest idea I've had. But I think that my advice for you could apply to myself as well. I need to stop thinking of marriage as this big eternal thing, and just focus on NOW. I'll keep my eyes on my own feet, take it one step at a time, and hopefully when I look up, I'll find myself an old lady still silly in love with my own gaggle of kids."

"I hope so too!"

"And we can still be friends. Just ... let's keep it to phone calls for now. If you need a boost or some encouragement. I'll be there for you."

"Yeah me too. If you need to vent again, just give me a call. I can still be that "stranger" for you ... no judgments and getting the word back to the people you talk about."

They shook hands and parted, and Rooney felt like the day was a just a little bit sunnier. Maybe he could do this after all.

Oh, wow! Rooney is really in quite a bind. Hmm, it's so interesting to see him struggling to get better with himself. I hope all things work out well for him - for everyone! :)

Haha well, this is one of the side effects of going on vacation. I actually can't totally remember who Darlene's husband is! I think it is Malcolm Landgraab but I couldn't 100% remember when I was writing this up, so I kept it ambiguous, since so far he hasn't really played into the story anyway.

Part 3 - Finding Yourself Isn't Easy

Rooney's talk with Darlene happened just in the nick of time. When he returned home, he found his siblings waiting for him.

"We need to talk," Amanda said firmly.

Rooney nodded, feeling the heat flush up and down his body and the butterflies filling the pit that had just opened up in his stomach. He followed them to the living room and sat down on one of the soft, overstuffed couches. His cousins took a seat together on the couch across from his.

"Look, guys, before you say anything ... I know what this is about. I know I haven't been pulling my weight and have been acting immature. I promise, things are going to be different from now on. I'm really going to change, I swear!"

Amanda sighed. "Rooney, you keep on saying that but nothing has happened. How can we trust that what you're saying is true? We've been trying to give you some time to adjust, but the bills are piling up and you're an adult like us. We can't keep supporting you. You are our family and so we're giving you a little slack, but we can't keep it up for much longer. I know you didn't go to a job interview today. I saw you go into the library and they are not hiring."

"No, I know," he scrambled, desperately for something to make her believe him. "Look, I didn't tell you where I was really going because I was embarrassed. I didn't have a job interview, I met up with a counselor because I know I've been messing up and I need help. We met in the library to be incognito."

Okay it was another lie, but Darlene's words to him really HAD been like a counselor's. But if he told them the truth they wouldn't hear anything but that he had been out meeting women the day after a one night stand. Married women, at that. He needed them to understand that things really were different now.

Amanda looked at him skeptically, eyes narrowed, while L4z3r looked at him hopefully, wanting to believe what he heard. Amanda sighed again, too tired from work to interrogate him like he was one of her contacts.

"Fine," she said. "But we're not just taking your word for it this time. This is an ultimatum. We need to see some real change by the next time bills come around or else you just can't stay here. I'm sorry, but this is the way it has to be, Rooney."

"That's fair," he replied. And it was. It was more than fair for someone like him. After they finished talking a little bit more, he went up to his room and started making a checklist for himself. First thing on the list was signing up for counseling for real. Next, investigating job opportunities. He also made a special note underneath that this was ALL he was to think about for the time being.

**********************

Meanwhile, L4z3r was feeling a lot more confident in his guitar playing abilities and was sure he had moved beyond the level of ordinary street busker. The next time he was at the symphony, he invited Victoria Andrews over for tea and said he would play for her.

After relaxing over cups of oolong tea and chatting about the latest goings on at the symphony and within the classical music world, L4z3r finally gave Victoria her private performance. He played, "A Love Since Forgotten." He had yet to experience the pain of lost romance, but instead he channeled his feelings on losing his father into this song. Even if it wasn't the same pain, it was a pain of the same depth and the guitar wailed mournfully under his skillful fingers.

When he was finished, he looked up expectantly. Mrs. Andrews stood silent and pale, a tear slowly trickling down one cheek. "Oh, Mr. Greythorn," she whispered, "That was beautiful." She had recently lost her husband to the Grim Reaper and the song had not only touched the grief in her, but also reminded her of she and Mr. Andrews' love for each other and the good times they had had together.

L4z3r quickly poured her another cup of tea and led her to a comfy chair so she could pull herself together. She smiled gratefully and breathed deeply as she sipped her tea. When she was composed again, she looked at L4z3R.

"You simply must be doing something more than playing for tips in a street. Your talent is being wasted. I can't get you a position in the symphony. My pull is not that great and they simply don't have any slots. But I can get you a position with the symphony. It's just an assistant position. You would basically be an errand boy for the crew and the musicians, but I happen to know they are in need of someone and my subscription status gives me enough influence to have my suggestion taken very seriously."

L4z3r was thrilled. "Mrs. Andrews, I cannot thank you enough for this opportunity. I won't let you down. I'll be the best errand boy they've ever seen. And maybe someday I'll be able to repay you by writing a piece just for you that you can see performed on the stage."

"Ooh I hope so, boy. You'd better work fast though, I'm no spring chicken."

She laughed as L4z3R cast around for a response, blustering and blushing. His politeness wasn't really a match for her bluntness. "Well, while you get yourself together, I really must be going. I may be old and I may be a widow, but I'm not dead yet. I have a dinner date! I'd say I'll see you at the next performance, but I think your audience days are over for a while! Good luck, young man."

And with that, she swept out of the room, leaving L4z3r mystified, but elated. He immediately got on the phone to call his mom and tell her the good news.

**********************

The next day, Rooney got up early and got started right away on his new life of responsibility. The first thing he did was sign up for actual counseling sessions at the free clinic. His next move was to find out how to make some money. As he flipped through the paper, he noticed that the city was having a Grill-A-Thon in the park. This was an event the mayor put on to bring the community together and to feed people who might not always have enough food. Local citizens would come and grill up five meals each and anyone who wanted a free lunch would come down and grab something. For the people who served as cooks, the city would provide a small stipend.

Rooney was good enough at making hot dogs, so he decided to try that out first, as a way to make some immediate cash, then follow up other leads. He made three hot dogs and two tofu dogs and collected his stipend, amazed to have actual money to bring home. He also grabbed a hamburger someone had made and got his own free lunch.

Of course he couldn't help getting up to some of his old tricks, as he met a cute girl in the park and before he could stop himself, he was caught up in a conversation with her. Her name was Blair and she was single, so he was starting out all right. He knew he wasn't supposed to be thinking about dating right now, but she was so cute and ... wait what was that?

"I'm working at the police department, just entry level right now but I think I'm getting close to a promotion. I'll get a partner and everything."

That was like ten cold showers at once. Amanda also worked at the police department.

"Oh hey, my sister works there. Amanda Greythorn, do you know her?"

"Amanda? Of course! I mean, we haven't really worked together yet or anything but she seems really great at the job. I'm actually really hoping we'll get to be partners since we're pretty much at the same level. I think we would work great together."

Yeah, that killed it. He could not have Amanda hearing that he was flirting with this girl when he was supposed to be out finding jobs!

"Awesome," he said. "Maybe all of us could hang out sometime then ... as friends. We're all kind of on our own for the first time so it would be cool to make some friends our age. Anyway ... I actually have a job prospect to follow up on, so as much as I'd like to hang out with you some more, I've really gotta run."

"Oh yeah, actually, I'd better get back to work. Lunch break doesn't last forever!"

Phew, bullet dodged. Time to get back on track.

******************************************

While talking with his mom, L4z3r realized he had something else he wanted to talk to her about, but he felt more like talking to her about it in person. So when she told him that Ruby had some new pieces in the local art gallery, he asked her if she wanted to meet up there and take a look.

They looked at her latest pieces, which made L4z3R feel that maybe her life was more settled these days. They were less dark and dramatic and more light and airy. It made him smile and he could see that other patrons were smiling too as they looked at them.

"So," said her mom. "What's this all about? We never do stuff like this."

He laughed. "Well, maybe I want to start doing more stuff like this. I really did want to see Ruby's stuff. And yes, there is something I'd like to talk to you about. In person."

"Oh god are you pregnant?!"

"WHAT?! Oh ... yeah, I guess that happens around here sometimes. NO, geez, mom! It's just ... I wanted to ask you. What was it like when you met dad?"

"Oh!" she cried, giving him an interested look. "It's like that, is it? Well, I can tell you that when I met your dad it wasn't anything like normal, so it's probably not a good idea for you to measure yourself by that. But I can tell you that when you do meet someone special, it's pretty easy to tell that they're special."

"Heh, yeah, that's for sure. Well, okay ... I met a girl. She's not an alien, she's human. Her name is Toni and she's definitely special. We've been dating a little and I have officially asked her to be my girlfriend. And she said yes! We're taking it slow and getting to know each other, but I know she's looking for something serious. She wants to become a wife and mom, so I wouldn't be dating her if I didn't think that was a possibility somewhere down the line."

"Wow!" said V, "My little guy is really growing up! She doesn't have any pesky exes does she? Remember what happened with Ruby and Nick ..."

"Yeah, I know. It's not going to be like that with her. Although she does have a pesky ex, just not in the same way."

"Oh yeah? Well what way is it, then?"

"This guy Erich, he's just a jerk. He's really rich and he and Toni basically dated because their parents kind of pushed them into it. He expected that they would get married to bring their funds together and then he would basically do whatever he wanted while she played the part of the good wife. He's gross, mom."

"Ew, yeah, he sounds vile."

"Yeah, he is. Anyway, he treated her really badly, even when they were just dating, because he thought she would just give in to everyone's pressure to be with him. But ... Toni may be really sweet and gentle, but she's got a secret strength and she was never going to accept that kind of thing. So she broke up with him. Her mom was really angry but her dad had seen some of how Erich treated her when he thought no one was looking and he supported his daughter. So I'm not worried about a Ruby/Nick situation -- she would never go back to him -- but he does still harass her whenever he can. The main thing I'm worried about is that I'm going to get in trouble because I just want to kick the guy's butt so much."

"Well, look ... I would stay away from him as much as you can but remember, we have some powers that aren't as obvious as a punch in the face. If you need to defend yourself or your girlfriend, I think you can be creative and find a way."

"Hey ... you're right, thanks mom! I'm gonna try to have nothing to do with him, but if he does anything to Toni ..."

"Well, just let me know when the wedding is!" She winked.

"Hahaha don't get ahead of yourself, mom. I want things to be a certain way in my life before I bring someone that special into it all the way. But maybe someday. I'll keep you updated."

*******************************

Meanwhile Rooney was following on a real job lead. In high school, he had worked part time at the cemetery, but had foolishly and impulsively quit his job when he became an adult. Now he headed back, tail between his legs, to beg for his old job back. Sadly, the caretaker had already hired a new high school student to take his place and there was just nothing else available.

Dejected, Rooney turned to leave when he caught sight of the mausoleum, looming over the rest of the graveyard, dark and forbidding. When he was in high school kids had always dared each other to go in there. According to rumor, there was a whole maze of tunnels underneath, mysteriously long and winding for a space that should be only small. And according rumor, you could find treasure in there -- if you were brave enough.

Well, he had nothing to lose, anyway. Steeling himself, he made his way in. He found that the rumors seemed to be true. He quickly got lost within dank, dark, winding, cobweb-filled tunnels and chambers. He heard strange noises and was chased by incomprehensible creatures. But he finally stumbled out, clutching something hard and pointed in his hands. Breathing hard, he finally dared to look at what he had taken. A diamond! This ... this was it. This was what he could do. It had been dangerous, but it had also been exciting and fun. And it had been most rewarding. The money he could make from the sale of the diamond, combined with his money from the Grill-a-thon would be at least as much as his cousins made today, if not more.

He made his way home, excited about his new revelations. He couldn't wait to tell his cousins. But when he walked through the door, he couldn't get a word in edgewise between all the laughter.

  • "Sh! Be quiet! The nutters are out to get me."
I must say, I loved the part where L4s3r said Toni's ex was "gross." It made me laugh for sure.
Poor Rooney, he's just having such a tough luck. I feel bad for him, but it makes me proud that he's trying.
I love how you write this, hopefully that ex of Toni's won't be too much of a problem for them! I'm engrossed though! I want to read more!
