Whoo, here's the last of Generation 2. I finally caught up between playing and storytelling so starting with Generation 3, I'll do all of the kids at once instead of one at a time. I think it will be a little more interesting and "storylike" that way. But now, here's Ruby.

Chapter 5: Ruby - The Master of the Arts

Lifetime Wish: Master of the Arts
Traits: Loner, Overemotional, Artistic, Perfectionist, Virtuoso
Partner: Nicholas Miranda
Children: Rooney Greythorn
Career: Artist/Busker
Favorite Music: Classical
Favorite Food: Hot Dogs
Favorite Color: Violet

When Ruby was born, she was so angelic with her bright blond hair and beautiful features that her parents expected her to follow in Max's footsteps and be another golden child. They were so convinced of this, they ignored the tantrums, the drawing all over the walls and the pounding away at her toy instruments all hours of the day and night.

It wasn't really until she became a teenager that Violet realized her daughter was going to be someone quite unique, and her artistic side really shone through.

Her parents were a little bit baffled by her wardrobe and her colorful hair and the strange songs she came up with on her guitar, but they also loved her creativity and her originality. Violet sometimes looked at her and couldn't believe this bright creature had come from her, just like Max. Her children were very different but she loved them more than words could say.

It was pretty clear that Ruby wasn't going to go on to have any sort of desk job, but it was no problem for her to figure out how to pay her way. She spent her mornings painting until she was skilled enough to be shown in the local galleries and sell some of her painting.

In the evenings she went out played for tips in the downtown hot spots.

She quickly became quite popular and when she played it would turn into a small concert, with the tips just rolling in. Ruby didn't need to worry about money at all.

When she started to become known as a painter as well, the biggest art gallery in town offered to hold an exhibition of her work. The exhibition opening party was one of the biggest days in her life. It was a sign that she could really call herself an artist and mean it. At the party she floated around on cloud 9, barely tasting the nectar and having whole conversations that she wouldn't remember one second later.

In the middle of the party, she ran into someone unexpected -- Max's old high school friend Nicholas Miranda. She remembered him as a real meat head and a jock but as a young adult he had grown into a dashingly handsome young man, and she found, to her surprise that she enjoyed talking to him. He was a writer now and pursuing a career in journalism. He was still quite playful though, and talked her into a game of tag right there in the gallery.

She hadn't had so much fun in ages, so she agreed to see him again. Ruby was impulsive and over-emotional, as was Nicholas, so it was after only a few dates that she found herself overcome with feeling, slipping to her knees and proposing to him. He squealed like an excited child and happily accepted.

If only those heady, romantic days of their early romance could have lasted ...

Chapter 5 continued

The marriage of Nicholas and Ruby was a bumpy ride to say the least. On his surface, Nicholas appeared to be the perfect husband. He was handsome, romantic and hard-working. He loved to come home from a hard day on the job and sweep his wife off her feet. He was always playful and had a way of really making Ruby laugh her stress away when she became overwhelmed with emotion.

On the other hand, Nicholas had never really grown up and he was extremely immature. He was reckless and he had a habit of getting himself into trouble without meaning to do it. He just seemed to have no impulse control. He meant well, but when he was in the moment and something was before him that he wanted, he just couldn't seem to stop himself.

Making faces in the mirror

So when his ex-girlfriend, Carrie Ursine, began "coincidentally" bumping into him around town, that's when the first inkling of trouble began. Nicholas had been with Carrie when he met Ruby and in his bumbling way, he had never quite managed to break it off with her until he and Ruby were actually talking marriage. Carrie was more than a little upset, to say the least, and she was not really ready to give up her man. She continued to pursue him in an innocent-seeming way, gradually upping her game, getting a little more flirty each time. She knew him too well, and knew that it was only a matter of time before he gave in, and unfortunately she was right.

The first time, Nicholas was devastated with himself. He couldn't believe he had done something so stupid and he ran home to tearfully confess and throw himself on the mercy of his poor wife.

Nicholas asks Ruby to calm down.

Ruby was more than a little upset, and though Nicholas tried to get her to calm down it was impossible. She had been completely betrayed and she had trouble controlling her emotions at the best of times. Now she was beyond all reason.

And then Nicholas did the absolute dumbest thing possible. He tried to take Ruby into his arms and kiss her, certain that if he could remind her of their feelings for each other that she would come around and begin to accept his apology.

Ruby rejects Nicholas's advances

Instead, she was completely disgusted and creeped out.

"Please," she begged, "Just get out. Don't touch me, don't try to talk to me, just leave me alone!" She turned and ran up the stairs, locking herself away in her studio, a room that no one else held the key to open. After pounding and sobbing at the door for a while, he gave up and left.

Feeling hopeless and unsure what to do with himself, Nicholas spent the night at the bar, drinking his sorrows away. On some level he knew that all of this was his own fault, but he was so desperate to save his marriage that he had to hold on to the idea that there was a way to make things right with Ruby. He didn't return home until he blackout drunk and early the next morning, Max found him passed out in the entry way.

Nicholas passed out.

For the next several days, an icy chill invaded the entire house. Ruby drifted through it like a ghost, barely speaking to anyone and locking herself away with her easel and her guitar. It was the darkest period of her life, but later on the paintings and songs she produced during this period would be her most famous. The emotions that erupted and churned within her came out as visions of terrible sadness and beauty that contained within them a small, bright heart of hope. But in the meantime, her family had to deal with the fallout of what she was going through. Ruby took to sleeping in VF-23's bed, since VF-23 never slept.

V would come in each night to find her still sleeping there and sadly curl up next to her little sister, giving her a gentle bio-boost as she slept, hoping each night that the next day would bring smiles back to Ruby's face.

V finds Ruby in her bed.

Throughout all this, Nicholas never gave up. It seemed like a miracle to the rest of the people in the house, but after many long talks, roof-rattling fights and rambling love letters, Nicholas and Ruby came to a new understanding in their marriage. On some level, Ruby understood that she had married an overgrown child. She knew that this would not be the only time he slipped, but she had also come to understand that for whatever reason, she simply couldn't let him go. She told herself that if she was going to accept him, she must accept him as he was and if that meant that he would hurt her sometimes, then that was the price of her acceptance. Her marriage was not going to be the one she had wished for or envisioned, but it was the one she had, and in a weird way, the one she now wanted.

The task she gave herself was to take any future disappointment and heartache and put it on the canvas or send it out into the world through music. She had already looked at the paintings and songs she had created in her emotional black hole and understood that they were something special. If her strange, not-quite-perfect relationship could give more of this to the world, then maybe, in the end, it would be worth it.

To celebrate her transformation and her growing understanding and maturity, as well as the renewal of her relationship, she went out and got herself a tattoo.

Ruby's tattoo

She chose a butterfly to remind herself that while her change was painful, it was also beautiful and could bring more beauty to the world, even if it sometimes hurt her. And it did. Nicholas could never quite get his act together totally, although he did better as the years went by. Carrie continued to haunt him and he continued to fall into her trap, until thankfully, she finally met someone else and settled down to have a family of her own. This gave Nicholas and Ruby a new peace that allowed them to settle into a happier, healthier relationship and eventually discover something like normality.

Even if it hadn't, for Ruby it was all worth it. Not just for the art that she created but for the beautiful boy that was her eldest son. Out of everything she created, she was sure that Rooney was her greatest work of art.

And that's it for generation two! I have a couple of updates on "where they are now" and then I will start on Generation 3. Thank you so much for reading and commenting. This is my first story, so I thank you for bearing with me while I figure it all out and hopefully slowly improve at my storytelling!

I know, me too! But Nicholas had a really high charisma so he was always able to get back in her good graces after a few days of sleeping in separate beds, that crafty bugger.

He does kind of look like a Frio ... I think it's the sideburns ;)

Before I get started with the next generation, here are some pics and updates of the people we've met so far.

Violet and Jason are elders now! Here they are hangin' out on their couch. They are still working at their new jobs - Violet has made it to level 2 of the culinary career and Jason is at level 4 of the sports job. I'm not sure how someone of his age made it to the minor leagues, but good for him! They remain head over heels in love and like to take long walks together after their work day, holding hands.

Here's a group pic of Generation 2 just before their kids moved out. Since they have been left to their own devices, they have all split up. Max and Sandi moved in with Max's best friend Parker Langerac and Nicholas and Ruby moved in to the Frio house for some reason so maybe they ARE related! ;) VF-23 stayed alone in the big family home since she couldn't bear to leave the place that's haunted by her husband's ghost.

Max took after his father and had a surprise visitor that left him with an unexpected pregnancy, so now L4z3r has an alien cousin, Max Jr.

Ruby and Nicholas also had a daughter after moving out. She is a little blond copy of her mother named Vickie. I haven't gotten any pics of her yet, but hopefully at some point she will show up.

Generation 3 has rented out a ramshackle old Victorian not too far from town to get started on their own lifetime wishes, which you will start to hear about shortly!

Here they are, relaxing in their new home and getting ready to start their new lives!

I am really impressed by this story, Violet. I am doing my own version of it with other characters and planning to jump towns from time to time to do specific wishes like the Master of Mixology. I am including a few townies in my story though. I see you haven't done the spouses for the second generation but then again, it would have taken longer had you included those.
I play The Sims 4 for fun, so I don't care if I never end up being interviewed for the Dynasty Hall of Fame; people who play for keeps burn out too easily and don't enjoy playing the games, so I am going to not sweat the details.

Yes, I made the decision not include the spouses, except as part of the story of the main generational group, because I wanted to keep the story mostly focused on the main legacy children.

I also sort of did this backward and started playing before I decided to do the project so the earlier parts of my game are not as fleshed out storywise. As I move along, the way I play has changed to be more oriented to the story, so I hope that as I get into the next generations things will become more interesting and detailed and will incorporate everything that happens in a more organic way. This is sort of a learning experience for me and I hope that as I go through it, the process will prepare me for writing better and more interesting stories in the future :)

Introducing Generation 3

Amanda

Amanda's early childhood was pretty normal. Her parents weren't as busy with their jobs as they would be in the future, and they doted over their darling child, giving her lots of attention.

She was also the only child in the house for a while and also had her aunts stepping in whenever her parents were busy or needed some time alone. With so much love and care in her early years, Amanda grew into a well-rounded and beautiful teenager with long, thick auburn hair, little rosebud lips and a dancer's slender body.

She was still a teenager though, and her rebelliousness took form in her many clashes with her mother. Amanda just couldn't help seeing herself as more mature than her fun-loving, partying mother and this resulted in blow-out fights and then long freezing silences where the two would give each other the silent treatment for a day or even two.

Amanda could never really pin down how she felt about her family. Sometimes it was loads of fun having parents that acted like kids themselves.

But having parents who acted like kids also meant you were often left on your own, forgotten.

Despite this confusing parental situation, Amanda grew up into a really sweet and responsible young lady. She was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it, whether it was a friend, a loved one, or a total stranger in the park who kept falling over on the roller rink.

She didn't have a lot of natural academic aptitude and Amanda often struggled with school, but her Aunt VF-23 came through and helped her the get by with passing grades, even if they sometimes had to stay up pretty late in order to get enough peace and quiet.

What she lacked in book smarts, though, she made up for in creativity, which seemed to be something of a Greythorn family trait. She had her mother's musical talent and from her aunt Ruby she learned that when life with her family became too hectic, shutting herself away in her room to paint was a way to find some peace.

She also found a kinship with her cousin L4z3R once he became a teenager too. They had a secret place under the stairs where they would meet and just talk out their frustrations. No one else in their class had such a crowded and weird family situation, so it was nice to have someone who could relate. And the two of them were both kind, sympathetic souls who were able to vent to each other without ending up in some kind of argument.

It really helped her make it through, so even though she had found her living situation pretty crazy, she somehow found herself agreeing to move in with her two cousins when they struck out on their own. From a beautiful teen, Amanda grew up into a beautiful young lady. She was neat and well-dressed, always wearing something fashionable and keeping her long hair neatly pulled back with minimal makeup on her face. She was athletic and active and retained her kind nature as a young woman.

When it came to what she wanted to do with her life, she definitely took after her father. She decided not to go the route of military, like he had, but she definitely wanted a steady job and a career that would really help people. At her school's career day, she found herself drawn in by a conversation with a female police detective and immediately decided that law enforcement was her career path. Her ultimate goal was to someday become a Forensic Specialist and her first order of business on moving into her new home was to head down to the police station and apply for a job.

I wish her luck! Police Track is one of the most troublesome careers for me, I didn't like that I have to woo Sims into telling my Sim stuff I don't wanna know about, before getting the chance to choose at LV6. And that house is my absolute favorite in Sunset Valley.

PS. She looks sophisticated even in that glaring red. (L and Amanda = Christmas). And Violet and Jason sitting apart, hmm. Would have been nice to see them sit together.  :P

Anyway looking forward to what happens/happened next!

Yes, I am pretty fond of Amanda, and her favorite color is red, so I let her wear it, even though it is pretty bright sometimes! And yes, L4z3r is fond of green so they do get pretty Christmassy when it's just the two of them! I wish I had thought to make Jason and Violet snuggle ... sometimes it seems hard enough just to get my Sims to sit still at the same time!

Introducing ... L4z3R

L4z3R Greythorn may have been half-alien, but somehow he never felt that out of place in his family. Everyone was so different from each other, and he wasn't the only green person anyway, that it never occurred to him to feel out of place in any way. It wasn't until he became a teenager and went to high school that he started to feel different. He spent less time among his family and more time at school and his part time job at the book store and he started to notice that he didn't really see any other green faces except his mother's.

It still mostly didn't matter to him, and luckily no one was very mean about it. He was actually pretty popular, being extremely well-dressed and groomed with a handsome face and a quietness that made him seem mysterious. The girls all put him in the "sensitive artist" category, even though he hadn't yet displayed any artistry, but it worked for him. Still, every once in a while he would get lonely being the only person that was part alien. In the winter he sometimes snuck off and made alien snowmen and pretended they had come to visit him and be his friends. But they were boring friends. They didn't do or say anything and always melted away, never to be seen again.

It became so much harder as a teen because that's when his alien powers suddenly kicked in. VF-23 had never really mentioned it, since she wasn't sure whether he would inherit the alien powers or not, so he was caught totally by surprise when he suddenly found himself unable to sleep at night, and when he would touch someone and strange energy would suddenly start to ... do something to them. When he thoroughly freaked out his cousin Rooney with an accidental bio boost one day, VF-23 realized her son had inherited the powers and that night, she started to teach him how to control them. Once he gained control over his powers and understood the different way he used and regained energy, he slowly started to get used to it and it started to feel like just another part of him.

Even so, he couldn't help but feel a bit more set apart from his cousins and friends than he had when they were children. They treated him just like any other teen, but adolescence is an emotional time and there were days when the feeling of being "different" just overwhelmed him. On those days he turned to the someone he thought could relate. Cycl0n3 was still hanging around the house as a ghost and he and L4z3R often spent time together at night, just watching TV together or chatting.

When L4z3R told his father about those feelings of being different, Cycl0n3 nodded.

"Yes," he replied "I knew that feeling well when I was alive. For me getting on the internet always helped me out. No one there knew me and I could be whoever I wanted. And also hacking, which made me feel pretty powerful. I know your mother felt the same about the internet ... maybe you could give it a try?"

So the next night L4z3R tried going on the internet, but it just didn't do anything for him. Unlike his mother and father, what he really wanted was to connect with other people in a real way. He didn't necessarily want to erase how different he was, he just wanted to feel like he belonged. Nothing on the internet felt real to him. He wanted something deeper and more present.

And then one day, when listening to his Aunt Ruby play guitar, he started to feel that through the music, they had a deep connection to each other. It didn't matter what they looked like or how different they were from each other. When she played, he could understand what she was feeling inside and he could recognize feelings he had in himself. The music highlighted the ways they were the same and the ways they were different didn't matter while the music was playing. It was not too long afterwards that he asked her to teach him.

As soon as he learned the basics, he spent every free moment practicing. Once he learned to lose himself in the music, all he wanted to do was play.

With all the extra free time he had from not sleeping, it didn't take long before he was good enough to play in public. He snuck off every weekend to play for people downtown and between these little performances and his part time job he soon had a nice little savings ready for when he reached adulthood.

By the time he became a young adult, he was already well aware of what he wanted to do. His aunt's rock star style was not for him ... he was more of a classical guy. But he wanted to reach the masses, so his dream was to eventually become a Hit Movie Composer. Unlike Amanda, however, there wasn't just a place he could go to sign up and start working. You can't just start composing and have people want to play your songs. You have to build up a rep first. Which meant he needed to work his way into the Sunset Valley Symphony first and become established enough to get them to play his music. It was a pretty elite group though. Before he could get hired, he was going to need an "in." The only way to get that was to make himself familiar, so his first expenditure from his savings was on season tickets to the symphony.

Re: The Greythorn Lifetime Wish Project - Generation 3 - Rooney Greythorn
« Reply #43 on: March 24, 2014, 06:22:16 PM »
Rooney Greythorn

Rooney was truly the forgotten child of his generation. Born last, he was also born into a house where everyone was at the height of distraction. Nearing the culmination of their life's dreams, they sometimes were a little forgetful of the youngest life in the house. Luckily, with a full house, he could never be totally forgotten and he managed to grow up well by the skin of his teeth.

Before bedtime, it was mostly Amanda who took care of him. She found playing with a sweet baby or toddler infinitely more interesting than doing her homework. From the time she came home from school until the time she went to bed, Rooney was pretty much attached to her at the hip. After bedtime, it was good old Auntie VF-23 that took over, running to bring him a bottle, change his diaper or soothe him when he cried in the night. In fact, she ended up moving him into L4z3R's old crib in her room to make taking care of him easier.

This continued into childhood, when Auntie V was always there to make sure he got his homework done. It also helped that he grew to childhood only slightly behind L4z3R, so they quickly became fast friends, spending the hours between homework and bed playing endless games of catch, tag or snowball fight or playing in the giant piles of leaves that someone had spent the day carefully raking. It was a fairly carefree childhood without much adult supervision. Rooney probably wouldn't tell you that it affected him very much, being so little cared for by his actual parents, who were caught up in their relationship drama so much of the time. But as he grew, those effects became more and more apparent.

Rooney grew into a disheveled teen, who was as lazy as they come. Most of the other guys gave him crap, but something about his slightly unkempt look and his large puppy dog eyes put all the girls under his spell. He had a look that just begged for a good woman to come and take care of him. Unfortunately for those women, Rooney had his dad's wandering eye and could never quite settle on just one girlfriend. But unlike his dad, he didn't even try. Bearing witness to his parent's roller coaster of a marriage had left him with an utter fear of commitment and he vowed that he wouldn't commit himself to one partner, only to be ultimately disappointed (or to end up disappointing her).

Besides, he had one woman in his life that would never let him down already. His cousin Amanda was the one who would always be there for him when he needed a friend. They would never be romantically involved, but that wasn't important. For Rooney, it was better to stick close with family and let the other women come and go.

He managed to grow up into a young adult without getting killed by any of the angry young women he left in his wake and eagerly moved in with his cousins. Unlike them, however, he had no real career ambitions. The only thing he really wanted to do was work on himself. His ultimate goal was to have both the Perfect Mind and the Perfect Body. He would much rather spend his days reading books, playing chess and working out than slaving away at some desk. The question was ... how long would his cousins let him get away pursuing an ambition that didn't help pay the rent?

**VACATION NOTICE**

To those who are reading: I will be leaving on vacation tonight and will be out of the country without my computer, so I won't be able to update again for another two weeks.

I do have a LOT of story all lined up waiting to tell so I'll be able to jump right into it as soon as I get back, which will be on April 7.

If you're reading and enjoying and haven't bookmarked this yet, please do so and then you will know the second I start updating again. Thanks so much for reading along so far. It's been a real learning experience and it's made me look at my sims in a whole new way. Can't wait to get back to it, but also can't wait for a vacation! I'm going to New Zealand, in case anyone's curious. :)
