I'm afraid it's bad news ... :( It just had to happen. I'll explain why afterward.

Chapter 3 continued

"That sounds serious," V replied, thoughts of her nooboo suddenly fleeing from her mind.

"It is. I'm sorry, I should have told you, but I just couldn't. I thought ... I thought maybe I could keep it to myself for now so that we could just be happy, but I can't, not with a nooboo on the way."

V felt a strange feeling come over her. Like she was burning and freezing all at the same time. It washed over her from her head to her toes. Was this what being terrified felt like?

"The reason it took me so long to come back to you," C explained, "was that I got some bad news and I had to think things over for a while. You see, about six months ago, I started having problems with my health. I was getting headaches, losing weight, getting fevers and I was tired all the time. I thought it was a really bad flu, but it just wasn't going away, so I had started going to a doctor to figure out what was going on. I think that was part of the reason Tamara stayed with me, even though she had so many problems with the way I lived. The day that I met you, I came home to a message from my doctor. When I called him back, he informed me that my test results had all come back and that I have cancer and it's a pretty advanced stage."

"Oh my god ... why didn't you tell me? I really deserved to know that! I could have helped you ... I could have done ... something."

"I know. I know I should have told you. It wasn't fair of me not to. But you know me. I'm so terrible at communicating and I never seem to do the right thing when it comes to making big decisions. Well, except for marrying you, of course. That was the best thing I ever did. But I thought ... well, I thought I could work with the doctor and maybe I could be treated and get better without you having to ever find out. But the treatment isn't working very well, and now with a kid on the way ... well you just need to know. There's a chance our child could grow up without a father. I don't know how much longer I have."

VF-23 couldn't say anything. She spent the night curled on the bed, hands placed protectively over her stomach. She went into her trance state so that no one could reach her and she could be utterly, totally alone for just a couple of hours at least.

It turned out that the pregnancy was a great motivator for Cycl0n3. His health got a little better and he was able to see his son born and even age up into a toddler. They named him L4z3R, because Cycl0n3 insisted it was the coolest name ever, and how could VF-23 turn him down?

He was adorable, as they knew he would be, with his mother's green skin and large, inquisitive eyes.

Unfortunately, once his son reached the toddler age, Cycl0n3 began to run out of strength to hold on. He started to waste away before their eyes and soon he could barely get out of bed anymore. One night, as the family was getting ready for bed, the Grim Reaper paid a visit.

The whole family mourned Cycl0n3 but VF-23 also felt a sense of relief as she watched his ghost float away from the body that had caused him so much pain. Besides, she had an idea. The rest of the family didn't even notice when after the funeral, she quietly brought home a new decoration for her bedroom.

So, I was really sad to have to do this to VF-23's husband, especially since he was a good husband! But in order for the second generation to all have children of their own, one of them had to be a single parent. But the guys the two women were attracted to both wouldn't woohoo or try for children until they were married! I guess they are a little old-fashioned in that regard. So someone had to go and since Cycl0n3 had the same lifetime wish as VF-23 that meant he drew the short straw. But death is only a minor obstacle for him. He definitely likes to make his presence felt from the beyond and you will see him again :)

Aww. Yeah, I've seen Sims like that.

L4z3R/ L is adorable! I hope he grew up fine without many problems.

VF-23 is definitely an intriguing sim, and Cycl0n3 was the perfect mate for an alien. So sorry he had to die.

Thanks for the comments! I've never done a story like this before and it's so interesting how the little moments in between what you "make" them do form their story for them. All of them are interesting in their own way, although VF-23 is my favorite of this current generation.

Chapter 3 continued

VF-23's plan worked. Late at night she began to have a visitor.

Cycl0n3 would come out and hang around the house with her when all was quiet. Mostly he'd engage in his favorite activities - hacking and trolling internet forums.

He made sure to be there for his son whenever he could.

And with the help of his unconventional mom and dad, L4z3r grew into a child.

He was smart and incredibly creative. If he was a little bit melancholy compared to other kids his age, it was only to be expected, having lost his dad so young. Luckily, he has a house full of people who loved and cared for him and cousins close to his age to be his friends.

Once L4z3r was grown into a child and packed off to elementary school every day, Cycl0n3 asked his wife to have a serious talk with him one night.

He took her in his arms and held her, and said, "Well, love. You've done well so far with L4z3r, but there's something you've been neglecting."

"I have?" she asked, surprised.

"Yes, love. You've been neglecting your own dreams. I can still remember that darling fierceness in your eyes when you determined to top the pro chess rankings. You've been letting your status lapse."

"I don't ... I don't know how much that matters anymore."

"Are you sure? That's not the feisty woman that I married. She would have stopped at nothing to dominate the chess ladder. She certainly wouldn't have let life get in her way. Not the woman I love."

An old familiar glint came to her eye.

"You're right. I really am the best. I need to prove it. Besides that awful Geoffrey Landgraab is currently at the top, I just have to knock him off."

"Indeed, my love. I cannot wait to see you do it." And with that, Cycl0n3 flitted off to possess the refrigerator, satisfied with a job well done.

The next day, VF-23 began working her way up the chess ladder again. She was surprised at how close to the top she had gotten. It really didn't take long before she made the final move that placed her at the top.

Congratulations to VF-23, the new Chess Legend of Sunset Valley!

I think I ended that a little abruptly, but work have been very busy all of the sudden. Anyway, that's kind of how it happened. I was surprised when VF-23 was suddenly named chess champion because she seemed to get it pretty easily! Plus, I have to keep the story moving ... I still have her sister and brother and the next generations to move on to.

While I'm getting the next chapters ready, have some bonus pics of VF-23 that I didn't end up using in the story.

Is Cy a controllable ghost, or is that haunting? Curious, because I never revive dead sims.  :-X

He is just haunting, but you can do social interactions with a ghost like you can with other sims. Otherwise they just do whatever they want. Cycl0n3 was definitely interested in his son though, it was really sweet. He would usually gravitate to whatever L4z3r was doing once he grew up to be a teen and was awake late enough.

Bio

When Max was born, Violet had eyes for nothing else but him. She took him with her everywhere and soon discovered that he loved the outdoors as much as she. She would place him in his infant seat under the shade of the apple tree while she gardened and he would babble and coo and laugh away.

When he became a toddler, that's when he started to become a bit of a handful. Brave and adventurous, he was always trying to climb something or make his escape to have adventures. Violet was constantly having to give him "time outs" after catching him trying to get out of the yard and see what was beyond their fence. Even though he was a little troublemaker, they never gave much thought to what he would be like in personality. They assumed he would be somewhat like them, being their son and all.

When Max became a child, it quickly became clear that he was very much going to be his own person. He wasn't much for studying -- his parents had to sit him down and help him with his homework in order to get it done. But he loved to play sports and hang out with friends and he quickly became one of the most popular boys in his class. Violet and Jason could only shake their heads and wonder how two loner intellectuals like themselves managed to give birth to such a golden boy.

The trend didn't stop when Max became a teen. He grew up into a handsome, athletic boy.

He was always dragging Jason out to play catch, which Jason had to admit was probably good for him. At school, he became a star on the baseball team and he surprised his parents by doing pretty well with his grades as well. Even if he didn't make the honor roll, his parents were still quite proud of him.

When the end of his school years was coming up, he approached them one day.

"Guys, I want to talk to you about my future. We had a military recruiter come talk to our school today and I talked to him for a long time about my future. They're really interested in recruiting me and they think I could go really far with them. They are even starting a space program and if I do well enough, I could be allowed to train as an astronaut."

He looked at his parents, nervous as could be ... but they just smiled.

"I can't say I really understand it ..." said his father, "But the motto of this family has always been to chase your dreams, whatever they are. If this is truly what you want to do with your life, then we support you 100%."

Max gave a sigh of relief. "Thanks mom and dad. I promise I won't let you guys down. This really is my dream and I'm going to give it all I've got!"

Aww, I agree! I'm a family-oriented person for sure, so when I am doing a legacy project I can't help but include the family connections as a strong part of the story. I am glad that comes through. :)

Chapter 4 continued - Sandi

While Jason and Violet were easily supportive of Max's career decision, there was one choice in his life they had a much harder time accepting -- his girlfriend, Sandi.

Sandi

Max met Sandi French in high school and pretty much immediately fell head over heels. She was two years older and a real wild child. Raised by a single mom, she was one of those girls who just matures a little bit faster than everyone else. Excitable, daring and attractive, Sandi was a party animal that all the guys were interested in. Poor Max was in over his head, but he didn't care. He was confident, smart and had his own measure of daring, and it wasn't long before he managed to catch Sandi's eye.

After casually dating for a while they actually became boyfriend and girlfriend. This shocked everyone, since Sandi wasn't the type to settle for one guy at all, but Max was an all-or-nothing kind of guy. Max's parents and siblings had a hard time getting comfortable with Max's choice of girlfriend. Someone like Sandi seemed guaranteed to break his heart, since it was clear he was 100% in love and she seemed like someone who still had a lot of partying and crazy times left in her before she was ready to settle down.

They all breathed a sigh of relief when Sandi graduated. She and Max couldn't stay together. A young adult dating a teenager just simply wasn't done in Sim society and in any case, she couldn't get out of town fast enough. Sandi was headed to the big city and everyone thought that was the end of it. Everyone except Max.

He continued to keep in touch with her faithfully, calling her every weekend and inviting her out every time she was home. Sandi insisted on remaining friends only, but she did always talk to and see him. Perhaps she really did enjoy his company, or perhaps, as his family suspected, she liked having a handsome and popular boy like Max wrapped around her finger. They continued to expect that eventually she would meet someone else or simply drift away, but it never happened.

Sandi practicing guitar in her PJs

First, Sandi actually moved back into town for good. She wanted to be a rock star and in the city she found there was too much competition for a new face to really break out. She dated an indie musician for a while and he suggested she gain a local following somewhere else and then go from there. So back to Sunset Valley she came, determined to make something of herself on the local music scene. And Max was right there waiting for her when he became a young adult.

One of the first things he did when he aged up was start going to Sandi's coffee shop and open mic performances and he also started hanging out at the bars she liked to frequent. It wasn't long before they were dating again, to everyone's chagrin. And it didn't take long after they had re-established their relationship for Max to pop the question. As they walked home through the park from one of her shows on a warm, breezy spring night, Max stopped Sandi under a stand of trees next to the pond and went down on one knee. To her own surprise, Sandi found herself excitedly accepting. She had never thought she would get married, but now that the moment had come, she knew that she was ready and that Max was the one for her.

And it turned out, Sandi and Max defied everyone's expectations. While Sandi never really changed from her wild, party animal ways, she had eyes for no one but Max. Guys were always interested in her, and many of them assumed she would be the type to not take her marriage vows so seriously, but they were dead wrong. She shot every one of them down without a second thought and she and Max remained eternally faithful, two extremely different people who were desperately in love with each other.

Sandi and Max playing catch

How did it work so well? They just truly loved being together. And though they were very different on the surface, they shared a lot in common as well. They were both athletic and loved to work out and play games together and they were both adventurous and loved to go out and try new things. They supported one another in their careers, doing whatever the other needed, whether it was cooking dinner after a long work shift or providing motivation to keep going when they were tired. Whenever one of them did anything, the other would be happy to share the experience. And it helped that each found the other ridiculously attractive. They were constantly embarrassing their poor daughter with their public displays of affection.

Sandi and Max in a quiet moment alone together

Their daughter? Yes, it wasn't long after their marriage that the two of them had their own little nooboo. Amanda was a perfect mix of the two of them. A sturdy little thing who learned quickly but also loved to play, she could spend hours with her parents patiently learning to walk and talk, and one of her favorite things was for her mother to play music and sing for her.

Amanda as a toddler

As a girl, she was a real tomboy. She loved to play catch with her mom and dad and she had big dreams, wanting to be everything from a princess to the president to the chief of police. She was a definite summer child, wanting to be out doing anything and everything when the weather was warm and hiding inside when it grew cold.

Amanda as a child

Having a family definitely did a lot to domesticate Sandi, but it couldn't dampen her dream. She did change her goal a bit. Though she still wanted to be a rock star, she no longer hungered for international fame and fortune. She found herself thanking her old musician friend for his advice, because her decision to hit the local scene was no longer a beginning for her, it was her career. She found there was a thriving local music scene and one where you could quite easily make a healthy living and even become something of a local celebrity. And it wasn't long before she was a household name around town. Her band, The French Kissers, gained a huge local following. Sandi's heavy guitar style contrasted with her sweet, girlish voice drew sold out crowds at the local music hall and in addition to establishing herself as a musical icon in her hometown, Sandi was eventually able to buy into the theater itself and became a true entertainment mogul and patron of the arts in Sunset Valley.

Sandi's favorite activity - dancing to the radio

And what was Max doing all this time ... ?

Chapter 4 continued

Since he did not go to university and entered the military straight out of high school, Max's first job was little more than janitor's work. When he was not working on his basic training, he spent his time mopping floors, cleaning out latrines and repairing broken equipment. It was hard work, but in those early days it still afforded him time and energy to catch a movie, go out to dinner or play some catch with Sandi before collapsing into bed.

Working in the latrine

After only a couple of months of that, there was a problem in the mess with one of the servers consistently failing to complete basic food safety procedures. By this time, Max had a reputation for meticulous attention to detail even in his menial tasks, so he was asked to take over in the mess hall. This led to a great period of time where work wasn't really that hard for him and he could focus on getting through basic training and get in plenty of time with his new daughter.

Serving up waffles in the mess

But these early times soon came an end. He completed his basic training and joined the infantry. This was grueling work with even more extensive training. He and his fellow infantrymen has to be pounded into a disciplined unit that lead the charge into the worst of battles. It was unlikely he would ever see a battle, and he certainly prayed that he wouldn't, but he still had to be trained anyway. Every day he came home exhausted and collapsed into bed. He spent his days off catching up with his family, and the only other person he could really call a friend was his fellow soldier, Parker Langerak.

Parker Langerak

When his infantry group was broken up into squads, he was named squad leader. He was put in charge of nine other soldiers and promoted to the rank of staff sergeant. This didn't make his work any less demanding, but it did earn him a lot of respect and a few perks that were only given to officers.

With no war in sight and nothing they were preparing for, really, even with his duties as an officer, Max soon became bored. He didn't feel like he was living up the hopes and expectations he had set for himself, and even if he got more promotions, being a soldier on the ground wasn't really what he had aimed for when he joined up. He went to speak to his commanding officer, who nodded.

"I suspected that might be the case for you. In fact, I was just planning to speak with you. The local government has been planning to implement programs to make the military establishment here more useful in times of peace. Some of the programs involve surveying by air, so we are setting up a flight crew. You are a qualified candidate for this crew and if you wish to join, you will be trained to pilot small planes and helicopters as well as learning basic repair and maintenance of our flight vehicles."

Max saluted. "Sir, I would be honored to join the flight crew. I would like to start as soon as possible."

Soon, Max was given the rank of flight officer and he set to work learning everything there was to learn about airplanes and helicopters. Everything changed with this new position and he felt that he was finally on the path that represented his life's dream.

When the initial training was complete, they received their first mission. Their initial task was to do a photographic survey of Sunset Valley from the air and compare the resulting aerial photographs with the existing maps of the local area to identify areas that needed to be updated. For this mission, Max served as the wingman. His job was to fly to the side and slightly to the rear of the plane performing the mission and keep the pilot on course as well as apprise him of any weather conditions or other complications that might arise. His friend Parker was the lead pilot and they made a great team. Their first mission was a success and together they accomplished several other missions as well.

View from a flight mission

One day, Max was called in to base and asked to undergo extensive physical testing. They tested his strength, his vision, his cardiovascular health. When it was over, his commanding officer once again called him into his office.

Physical fitness testing

"Well, Max, you passed all your tests. You have been accepted to enter into the next level of flight training and train to be a fighter pilot. You will probably never use these skills in combat, but they may come in handy in the future nonetheless, depending on what happens for you. You will learn how to use radar and missile technology as well as combat maneuvers. You will also learn how to deal with g-force. Only our most elite men are going to receive this training, so I must congratulate you on a job well done." Max saluted once more, accepted the offer of training and practically skipped off the base that evening. His friend Parker also received the same offer to join flight training so the two of them went out for a celebratory drink.

Drinks with Parker

When their combat training was completed, the flight officers who had participated in the training were divided into two special squadrons. Max was made squadron leader of one and Parker headed the other. Though there was no combat for them to participate in, they led the most difficult missions and they were the ones lent out to partner with other regions on special projects.

Pretty soon, Sunset Valley's elite flight squadrons gained a reputation for themselves throughout the region and eventually throughout the nation. As they became recognized as one of the best of the best, the base received a communication from Sim Nation's top military academy. Their flight branch, the Air Tactics Instructor program, commonly known as "TOP GUN," was extending an invitation to Sunset Valley's elite flight units to receive advanced training at the academy. When they returned, they would be the most skilled fighters within 500 miles and would become flight instructors for all of the local region's military bases.

TOP GUN

This promotion did wonders for Max's stress level. He had been working non-stop for years and between the attention he needed to give to his work and family, he had almost no time to himself. Once he finished the TOP GUN program, his hours as an instructor only required him to work for a half day. He used the new free time he had to pursue hobbies like ice skating. His family was shocked to see how skilled he was!

Max is a brilliant ice skater

But Max was a go-getter and the relaxed schedule left him antsy. He enjoyed his time but once again found himself wondering if there wasn't something else for him. That something came soon enough. Recent economic prosperity allowed Sim Nation to beef up their space program, and Sunset Valley became the site of a new space center. Max and his fellow elite pilots were the first to enter the astronaut training program and all passed through with flying colors. When Max was qualified as an astronaut, he suddenly knew he had hit the pinnacle. This was his life's wish and what he was working towards all along, and the day had finally come when he had fulfilled his dream and lived up to the Greythorn name.

Wow, the hectic life of the Military career! It is so sweet that he still makes time for everything - regardless of his schedule.
I love the pictures of the "Latrine" cleaner and the "mess hall" worker, I always thought it was strange the way promotions worked in the Sims. That's a beautiful aerial view of the valley! Stunning! I can't wait to read more. :)
