Playing for tips
« on: January 21, 2014, 09:32:42 AM »
I have managed to get my guitar playing up to level 10 and have tried playing for tips many times and still have not gotten anything.  I am not sure why.  Do you have to be self employed in something particular?  Do you have to be in the singer profession?  Does it only work in some towns (I am in Appaloosa)?

Just not sure why it isn't working, as I said I am level 10 and have learned all the guitar music.  People around me seem to be enjoying the music, I know because when I stop playing some of the sims go ahhhhh, like disappointed.

anyone have a clue why this isn't working?  I have tried well over a dozen times, in various places, people usually seem to gather around after awhile, I play for a LONG time, like the entire day.....but still no tips.

Are you sure you're clicking 'Play for Tips' and not just 'Play'?

yep, play for tips

BUT....I just realized...I am using one of Twallan's mods called careers which I think does something.  It makes busking a self employment option so I think it might be that I can't busk (play for tips) unless I register myself as a self employed busker.

Okay I got it working.  Here's what I did.

Started a new toon. Levelled up his guitar in Bridgeport. Saved.
Sent sim to subway for tips. Nothing.
Quit to desktop removed careers self employed.
Loaded save and sent to subway. Tons of tips.
Sent Sim to theatre. Tons of tips.
Loaded original game with the painter sim and sent him to festival grounds (no subways in that town). Tons of tips.
Quit to desktop.
Put careers self employed back into mods. Loaded painter game. Sent sim to festival and got tons of tips.

No clue what happened. But for some reason something I did started things working and I get to keep my self employed mod. I am happy camper and my sim is rolling around on the bed with all his tips.

Again no idea why this worked...sheer dumb luck I guess.

For some reason I think the celebrity status interferes with a number of things, one of which is earning tips. If my sim has any stars, they can't earn tips normally, but have to go to the subway. That's in an un-modded game.

I agree. I don't play Mods; just the normal version of the game.
I'm a 5-star Celebrity. People don't give tips...they just take my photo.....lol....

I THINK you have to disable the Celebrity system under the Options menu. I THINK. I haven't tried it yet (I always forget to...lol). But I hope that if I disable the Celebrity system...tips will go back to normal....I don't want to move to Bridgeport to make tips...

Although if you disable the Celebrity system....I THINK...I THINK..that means that people won't invite you to their parties anymore...maybe? And I need to go to parties to play my instruments...to get the "Instrument Star" Challenge

I have celebrities turned off and my sims always get party invites. However, the [instrument] Star Challenges are very badly worded; it actually depends on completing 10 opportunities that never like to come, and not on how many times you play your instrument at a party.

I don't play with mods too. Even if it's very tempting. With all the townies married and procreate by progress... but the mod would usually mess with my plants (either make it barren- no, not really barren, it said harvestable but no fruits at all- or stay in the quality they are even when planted by green thumb or a fairy) or make the sprinkler un-turn off-able.

Being celebrities really is pain in the backside. I have a 3 star celeb, and when she go to somewhere with action queue, it usually all disappear because some townies are rudely interrupting her action queue to took photos or asking for photograph. I always cancel them all when it happens. Call me grumpy, but I really don't like it when someone interrupting my action queue.

Well, I found something that might work. The Sim who is giving you tips has to be a friend. I noticed that if my Sim is on a friendly status with another Sim, that Sim would normally give tips.

It has nothing to do with celebrity level.

I think I have to disagree about it having to be a friend.  Friendships grow during playing for tips, but I don't think friendship is required for receiving one.

Can confirm they definitely do not have to be a friend to give tips.  I'm currently playing an acrobat and she's not friends with the people that are tipping her.

Well then, that is strange. I noticed that no one gives my Sim any tips unless the tipper and the Sim know each other. Perhaps a bug?

What I realize when my sim go play for tips is, she must be playing near a bunch of sims.

If she is playing in a place where there is no sim around/near her, then no matter if in that one lot there are bunches of sim around, no one is going to give her tips because no one watch her playing for tips no matter if they are friends or not.
