I just found out if you have moveobjects on you CAN plant in the basements! Right after I posted, I just had to go and see if I could find someway to put my garden in the basement, and that's the only way I could find! Jeff, welcome to the forums and be careful what you wish for!  ;D BTW, I love your avatar!

I have a feeling that the only reason the gardens get a lot of meteor action is because Sims spend a lot of time outdoors in them.  The Sims are the ones targeted, not the garden.  The garden just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I agree that the target for the meteor is the Sim itself.  If you Sim happens to be in the garden, that's where the meteor hits.  My husbands game had a meteor while his Sim was painting.  If hadn't moved the Sim away from the area, the meteor would have come down right on top of the Sim.

Well you might all think I'm crazy, but I've set up chances of being struck to the max.
The picture below says it all.

He's a genius: sitting by the mailbox next to a small garden, with it being constantly watered by sprinklers. Ill give an update. Because he's sitting there before something happens. :)

I'll only call you crazy if you report back that you sat in front of the Sims3 screen with speed on normal for twenty-four hours REAL TIME waiting.

Your picture had me laughing! I can just hear your Sim singing to himself, "Dum dum dum, la de da, waiting for the big rock from the sky, la de da, dum de dum."

LOL!!!  I see he has a friend, and that they're living "bear in the woods" style!

Look out below! *crash*

Honestly though, I think you'll have to wait a long time for anything to happen.  I've had families who have lived outside for generations and they've never been hit.

I think the reason meteors tend to target a Sim while they are in the garden is because meteors can totally annihilate them, whereas if they hit a Sim walking around the top of the map it wont do much. Almost like EA is making up for the fact that the unfortunate occurrence being so rare by maxing the damage output.

Also as a warning, if your sim is doing anything in one place outside, keep them away from your mailbox and garbage can. Those things WILL get scorched if a meteor hits, and are not buyable items that can be replaced, in short giving you a permanent dirty room moodlet outside unless you totally restart the lot from scratch.

I didn't come up with this, but if you change your property type to commercial, then back to residential, it can restore your mailbox and trashcan. Well, it did restore one of those for me. I had somehow managed to delete my mailbox, I think, and I asked for help on the Sims 3 forum, and I got a fix. This was before I started coming over here and before Ambitions, so it may no longer work, but if it doesn't, at least you had something to try. Of course, if you're playing in a Challenge, ask first, though this is one of those things I think might be allowed as long as you get permission before you do it.

Oh, and I'd delete the singed/scorched ones before trying the fix, if that wasn't clear. Hope this helps.

Hope it is ok to post this here.  I first caught fire while sculpting, put myself out, not even 30 sim minutes later, I get the "the sky is dark" message.  My entire lot, with the exception of my trampoline was destroyed.

Wow, great pics.  Sorry that happened.  How about your sim?  From the looks of it, nothing made it out.  Good pics though and it happened at night.  I have never seen one at night and I believe someone just said something about that the other day.

Thank you.  I thought the pictures were neat.  Here is two more I captured:

I have had quite a few meteors hit my lots.  Never at night though.  I also have never had one hit while I garden.  I am always painting when I get hit.  Except this time. This sim is a computer whiz, so she is a night owl.  Maybe that is why it hit at night, it is her daytime.

Wow, those are some stunning pics. Never had a meteor and never asked for one. :quickly knocks on wood: I am sorry about your lot. And all those sculptures....

Thanks for posting the pictures, gerrr00; really does look like a meteor strike's a gargantuan mess. I'm glad you managed to get such good pics (and I hope your Sim survived!).  :)

I'm still a bit confused, you've only had one meteor hit at night (this one here)?

Again, thanks for posting these pictures.

Oh, yes, she did survive.  I had her grab her magical sculpting gnome, clicked on a coupon in her inventory, and sent her to the store to buy tuna for 75% off.

Correct.  I have had about 6 meteors hit.  This is the only one that has hit at night.  All others were during the day.

hehe gerrr00, your Sim sounds like they've got the emergency drill covered, "Grab the gnome and go get some tuna for tuna salad sammiches we'll eat while we watch the homestead in ruins!"

I've still not seen a strike, but based on your pictures, I'm not sure it's on my list of things my Sims want to see.  :)

Thanks again for your post.
