Meteorites
« on: September 02, 2010, 02:45:49 AM »
I just generally would like to know a bit more about the meteorite situation.  :o
Are there specific places, or specific times?
Please post any info you have about it.
Thanks,

Jeff H.

Meteorites are a very random event in your game.  I had not incurred a meteorite until several weeks ago when I was just starting out a Legacy challenge.  I had to get my sim out of the way fast so that he was not wiped out in the first 2 days of game play.  It wiped out my garden and I had to have my founder then re-locate his garden and start over again.  I ended up covering up the damaged area with terrain paints and then I put tiles over it as nothing would grown there.  I am on generation 2 or 3 in that game file now and have not had another incident with any more meteorites since that time.

Now TommyT has had his woes with meteorites lately and several other members on the forum have gotten them when they least expected it.

Also as a warning, if your sim is doing anything in one place outside, keep them away from your mailbox and garbage can. Those things WILL get scorched if a meteor hits, and are not buyable items that can be replaced, in short giving you a permanent dirty room moodlet outside unless you totally restart the lot from scratch.

Further, the meteor does not discriminate between indoor and outdoor items when it hits, nor care if you have the Fireproof Homestead reward in regards to burning items. I had one crash next to my house, and everything in my living room, windows included, were either reduced to scrap or singed to needing replacing.

I also had one ruin my dynasty garden in a few days in-game playing! Do you think the game specifically targets gardens? Were your Sims living outside at the time?

I think meteors specifically target Legacies.  I had to start over when my fisherman Sim was hit just after he got his skill to 8 and was fishing in the SV graveyard for a vampire fish.  No more "leave the game running while I grab a cup of coffee".  It's the pause button for me to avoid needless loss of life.

I have one game where meteorites have hit twice within mere days of each other.

The first time my Sim was in his garden.  I wasn't paying much attention and first thing I knew he (and the garden) had been smashed to smithereens by this HUGE rock.  Fortunately for the Sim, he had a death flower in inventory so he came back from the dead.

The second time, the same Sim was giving a performance at the theatre when I saw the "getting dark" notice.  I was playing with "testingcheatsenabled true" active, so I teleported him as far out of the way as I could.  I later went back to check the theatre - no damage, but small meteorite pieces to be collected all around the place.

I think in my dynasty, I am going to try a decoy garden.  The lot is so big, I have already made a small garden, my sim only has two more points before planting his special seeds, maybe make another garden with those seeds.  Not sure what will happen, maybe have him tend to garden at night.  I already had one meteor mess with a challenge game, not taking any chances with this one.  I am not so far ahead I can't start over, but just the writing itself alot of work.

I wonder why it targets gardens?  That is so strange or it targets the sim in the garden, not sure which, I guess I would probably say the sim. :)

Heya Jeff.  :)

I've played a goodly amount of Sims3 Ambitions, and not seen a meteorite in-game. Has anyone seen / read / used a cheat to invoke one? Does such a cheat exist?

From what I've read here:

  • Near the Garden: wildredchild, Pielord, and FleurDeLune. (Saltypaws?)
  • Near the Mailbox / Garbage Can: twrdrockfan.
  • Near the Theater: FleurDeLune.
  • Near the Graveyard: Seriphina.
  • Not specified: Saltypaws.

I'm looking forward to seeing one, but I think they are pretty rare, and they seem to be fairly random as well.

I know someone mentioned a while back one hit during a recent challenge, but I confess, I can't recall who mentioned it, nor if they specified the location their Sims were in at the time (for some reason the Consignment Shop sounds familiar, but <shrug>).

Yup, my Dynasty garden got wiped out by a Meteor.  I posted this picture on my story thread, but since I'm sure not everyone reads it I'll post it again here.

I have a feeling that the only reason the gardens get a lot of meteor action is because Sims spend a lot of time outdoors in them.  The Sims are the ones targeted, not the garden.  The garden just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

This is the only meteor I've had since Ambitions came out, so it seems to be really rare.

Might have been me. I mentioned a meteor wiped out a good portion of my 3 Elder's yard in the Grim Reaper Challenge. It was triggered by looking through a telescope.

Metro, yep,

Might have been me.

'twas you.  :) Now I recall why I have a vague recollection, I was trying not to pay too much attention so I wouldn't comment / type about the event (and accidentally yap about the challenge).

I was looking forward to one of my elders experiencing a meteor-strike while ... (doing a challenge-specific activity associated with a telescope).

AriaGirl77,

hehe thanks for your picture! No, I've not seen it, I've avoided the "Dynasty" thread until I work through the "Amazing" recipes for Nectar.  ;) I am going to check out your Dynasty thread tho, because by the happy plumb-bob in front of that ice block, it doesn't seem you (or your Sim) was too concerned as the "Meteor Shadow of Doom" hovered overhead! :D

So we've one more "Garden" hit, and one "Near a Telescope" meteor strike.

Has anyone experienced a meteor strike at night?

LOL, I had already told the targeted Sim to move out of the way, so I was clicking around to my other sims to make sure they were out of harm's way.  :P

Meteorites hit my testing game for the da Vinci Challenge.  Did a lot of damage but completely missed the small garden I had going.  One sim was inventing and the other was, I think, reading the paper.  The sims got out in time but wow was that scary!  I lost a lot of money.  If that had been my real challenge game, I probably would have cried.

I've had three so far. One was while they were getting ready for work and tending the garden. Wiped it out and messed up my first set of perfect cheese and eggs! Than I had another a few weeks later which the same person. Than I've had another one on another saved file. All I can say is be careful what you wish for! It doesn't care if you have FINALLY gotten your eggs and cheese perfect, it doesn't care if it takes out a $5300 bed and is only worth $5000 either! I try to keep everything underground because I'm not sure if it could get my stuff, but probably could lol. I wish I could put my garden underground, I would do it in a heartbeat!

EDIT: I knew there was a thread I was talking on when 2 of them happened, I just found it! I can't believe I'm so chatty lol I had to go through like 15-20 pages of my posts before I found it! Guess I should be quiet lol.  ;D Awww the spell checker told me lol and awww was misspelled hehe.

WOW!
From what I've seen, Gardens do seem to be a pretty frequent target area!
I actually want to see one of these meteorites, because all I ever see are smoldering ghosts which have a fire ghost's outline, and a mummy's curse's ghost inside.
@Metro: Yeah, I had my Sim looking through and a meteorite landed at the theatre, but it was only a large collectable, not like the one on Carl's Ambitions overview. How I'd love one like that.
Somebody send me some luck!!!!!!
Thanks everybody for the info!
