This must sound a really stupid question, but how do you open the IP tents so you can sleep in them?

Well if it works like the world adventures tents clicking on it in inventory should give the option to place it, I've not really looked at the IP tents as yet, truth be told I keep forgetting there is one but I imagine they work the same way.

That is the correct, if it's rolled up, you want to drag it into the personal inventory, then click and choose the option to place it. You'll get the footprint to let you place it, then it'll be done. Simple as that. :)
