A better way to level up Advanced Tech skill (in my opinion)
« on: November 07, 2013, 05:16:01 AM »
I think I found a better way to level up Advanced Tech than repeatedly cleaning holo pets. While cleaning holo pet is alright, it requires way too many click and since you have to click on the sprite to queue up actions, it gets more painful.

Better (in my opinion) and faster way: Power Cleanse.
Power cleanse seems to level quite a bit faster than Quick cleanse, even faster than cleaning holopet, and it raises skill the entire time you are showering means less click and also easier to queue up actions.

The drawback is you cannot do power cleanse until upgrading the sonic shower at L9, but if you already have one upgraded (by another sim) you can do this from the beginning and it raises skill FAST!
This is easily done because Plumbots have innate hidden L10 Advanced Tech, you only need to equip them with limitless learning to enable the "upgrade" option.

To maximize your skill gain, make sure to start dreaming for Advanced tech as soon as you can, it would double the speed for 12 hours (I think you can do this at L2)

I think I'm the one who will be writing the Advanced Tech LTW article for the Guide.  I'll be sure to keep this in mind and report back my findings.  :)

One of the fastest ways that I've found is to use the windcarver to go everywhere. This levels it pretty quick if your Sim runs around town a lot. There is also the option of doing Emit's Opportunity chain that starts with Welcome to the Future where you have to Fly Around on a jet pack for the first part. I leveled Advanced Tech to 10 in a couple of days doing this chain, but my Sim having the Opportunistic LTR might explain doing it that fast.

I find this the most practical way of increasing the skill too. It might not be the fastest, but my sims can get on with doing other stuff and gain this skill while they'd just be walking around normally.

Speaking of the windcarver, do you find that the sim will use the windcarver to get from point A to point B over using a vehicle?

I don't know if it's a weird glitch in my Bridgeport, but that's what I got so far - "I'll use the windcarver to go to work on the other side of town, over the carpool!"

Sometimes, but not always. Then again, I have one sim who is going to work on his horse (his colleagues seem to like it), and a whole lot of others seem to be walking long distances, so maybe there's been some tweak to the code in this area?

Probably, since (now that you mentioned it) I see a lot of the cross-town walking too.

Ah, EA, I love these little quirks you guys add. ;D

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll test that myself and better highlight the other methods. I agree on the Windcarver, as it was constantly helping when I was working on Bot Making, but I reset and focused only on AT so wasn't using it to level. Its passive is nice, but note if you use the Jetpack you need to go back and pick the Windcarver as your default again.

Yes, it's a pain that it resets to not using the windcarver when you go through the portal too (either way).

I just wanted to add something that I noticed while playing a new Sim yesterday. It's not really a fast way to level the skill, but doing Fly Around on the jetpack boosts fun but also gives a pretty nice bump to the skill. The whole resetting thing is annoying but understandable since both the jetpack and windcarver are modes of travel. The resetting any time you go to another location like a vacation or back and forth between the present and the future is more annoying. I have yet to find a mod that fixes that, and I doubt EA will change it. You would think it would be automatic like the brooms or the bicycle.

I found the Jetpack way too dangerous and had to reload a save about 6x in a row thinking it was just bad luck, but even at level 9 I was meeting the reaper very reliably when I would queue up 8 'fly around with jetpack' interactions. Save or have death flowers on hand before going this route :)

I keep hearing about meeting the reaper by using the jetpack, but I have yet to have it happen. It might be the fact that every Sim I make has the Lucky trait or something. The worst I've had happen is my Sim nose-diving into the ground and pulling himself out. Maybe, I've just been lucky so far. :P

Do NOT use the Jetpack to raise it. As Carl noted on the guide, the maximum chance of death is 25%, it caps out at this point. But the Free Flying buff increases this chance. When you do not have it, the chance of death is 1%. But when you do have it, every successive "Fly Around" action will increment it by 3%. So you can do eight interactions before the chance caps out.

Fly around may boost the chance of death, but just using it to travel around what ever world your currently on doesn't seem to be risky, and still earns FT experience. I have routinely bought a JP for new sims and immediately send them to SimChina for the metals quest, then spend all three days flying from spawning point to spawning point collecting whatever.

I like to have my Sim dream in the dreampod for a night, then use the windcarver to get to the park, then use the jetpack to fly around and use to windcarver home. I immediately make them use the quick cleanse. It sounds strange, yes, but it works. I can't bother with Holopets, they look hilarious.
