The Watcher's Challenge - Chapter 4: Time Flies
« on: October 29, 2013, 09:17:54 PM »
Prologue: An empty field and a letter

Sunlight pressed down on her like a heavy blanket in summertime. She opened her eyes to the blue, blue sky. Too bright! She sat up slowly feeling sick to her stomach, dizzy. Her throat ached. “What happened? Where am I?”

No one was around to answer. She was sitting on the edge of an empty grassy field, not a bump or tree marred the flatness. Shakily, she stood up and saw she was standing next to a mailbox and large green trash can. They were the only two items in the entire field. She laughed at the absurdity of it.

Curious, she opened the mailbox. There was a single letter inside. No postage stamp, no return address, just "Ms. Pepper White" written on the outside. The name felt familiar. She realized it was her name. She opened the letter.

Dear Pepper,
I know you're feeling lost and confused. I promise I will explain everything, but for the time being, this is your new home. I have plans for you, a challenge of my own devising, but I know you're up for it. The end goal will be to have seven generations living in your house while you're alive. Don't be annoyed, the reward will be worth it. But more on all that later. For now, your first goal is to make a house and you'd better do it quickly. If you haven’t already noticed, you're a vampire, and that is the sun up there.
~The Watcher

Pepper grimaced. The Watcher...wasn't that ominous. But at least she knew more than she had a few moments ago. She hadn't even realized she'd forgotten her name, what else had she forgotten? Or perhaps she'd never know? She tried to remember something, anything, from before this moment, but came up blank. She was completely fresh, not a single memory. The sun beat oppressive down and the air weighed heavy and sticky. It was uncomfortably warm. She'd better do as the Watcher said and get out of this sun. How did one make a house? Did she need to hire contractors?

Pepper closed her eyes and tried to imagine the perfect house. It would have to be large to fit this property. Maybe a wide porch, a balcony on one side, and a tower for sure! There would be a pond to one side near a large garden and plenty of trees for shade from the sun. Perhaps a garage with several nice cars inside.

When she could hear the water falling in the distance and the wind blowing through the trees, she opened her eyes. A laugh burst out of her. It was hardly a mansion and there wasn't a tree in sight, but there was a simple brick house sitting in front of her.

A note was taped to the door.

Ha! Nice try Pepper, but there is no way you could afford any of that right now. Consider it one of your goals. For now, this one-bedroom should do until you make some money. It’s up to you to decorate it. The catalog is inside.
~The Watcher

She opened the door quickly and went inside. It was a relief to be inside and her eyes quickly adjusted to the dimmer light. The house was completely empty, but she took a tour anyway. One bedroom the Watcher had said, ha! There were closets bigger than that bedroom. She wasn't sure it would even fit a double bed.

Back in the main room, she sat down on the floor and opened the catalog. The pages were filled with floor patterns and wallpapers, couches and painting, and all manner of interesting items. She touched the wooden flooring and was surprised to see it cover the dull cement floor. Much better.

Pepper walked around the tiny house, catalog in hand. A couch, a bookcase, a table and chairs. She didn't bother with a stove and only got the smallest fridge. She was pretty certain vampire didn't need to eat food. She saved the "bedroom" for last although perhaps that was mistake. After dragging the dresser back out in to the living room she realized she had only enough money left for the smallest, cheapest bed. It landed in the room with a puff of dust, squeaking. At least the comforter was pretty.

Finished she looked around her new house. It was still far too sunny outside to go anywhere. The Watcher had said seven generations (!!) so she should probably get started on that. But she was literally a blank slate. Who'd want to hook up with her? She wasn't witty or charming or creative or smart. The only thing she had going for her was her wardrobe. It was time to use that standing mirror and skill up!

When darkness fell, Pepper was ready or at least as ready as she could be. It was time to check out her new town. Calling up the taxi, she asked for the nearest bar. It was a karaoke bar and there were two sims singing a touching, if off-tune duet, on the mike when she walked in. She scanned the room. The place wasn't hopping, but at least it wasn't dead. There were several eligible bachelors standing around. She felt a little awkward introducing herself, but she had to start somewhere.

Barrington Diamond was very good looking and Pepper felt a connection with him right away. He was interesting too, and they got to chatting about her moving to town and her new house and about the town itself. He seemed very interested in her.

It was all going so well... too well. She scanned his mind as he spoke, trying to learn more about him when suddenly: Juanita. He had a girlfriend or fiancé or maybe a wife! Was she here? She looked around quickly but did not see anyone who matched his mental description. Why was he chatting with her? Shouldn't he be with his partner? She excused herself quickly and went to the bathroom.

Pepper spent a few moments inside composing herself. She didn't think she should to waste her time on Barrington even though she really liked him. She was grateful he’d disappeared when she finally emerged. She looked around for another, well not victim, but she didn't feel quite right about her mercantile process.

Cowboy hats were for small boys playing in the yard, Pepper thought. She couldn't even remember this guy's name. Plus, he was a policeman, or wanted to be one, or something like that. Yawn. There wasn't any connection and he just kept talking. Then, for no reason he just blew up at her, annoyed over something she'd said or done or was. She wasn't sure.

It was a good thing she'd been practicing her conversations in the mirror all afternoon because she got him calmed back down. But Pepper decided it was a sign. She wasn't in that much of a hurry to find her number two, or at least not that desperate. No one here was worth her time and the Karaoke was giving her a headache. She was exhausted anyway after moving all day. She excused herself from Cowboy Hat, perhaps less than politely and called the cab.

Exhausted, she fell into bed the moment she got home.

Welcome to my first Sims Story. Thanks for giving it a chance.

I consider this story to be my personal challenge story to:
A) get practice writing stories in a forum format
B) practice taking screenshots
C) practice supermaxing skills and other events for dynasty challenges
D) see if I can finish what I start

So, I welcome all feedback that will help me achieve these goals.

Basically I'm doing a mini-challenge of an 8 generation vampire household where all the vampire supermax two or three related skills and achieve the top level of their career before the first vampire dies. I have no idea if this will be easy or hard as I've never done anything like this.

Wish me luck.

Well, welcome to the forum, raerei.

Your project seems interesting. I think that I will stick with this one. You have such interesting start to begin with. I admit that I’m not a good writer either to begin with; well I’m still practice like you do. And that was a nice building. Good luck! :)

For screenshots: I usually love taking close up Sims picture, especially their facial expression. Just pay attention to each interaction, every interaction (includes object) has interesting screenshot to begin with. Well, for example when you practice for charisma skill, you will get a lots of Sim pose. Just play the game and pause everytime you see something that interest you.

Well, tab button help a lot when taking screenshots. Using hideheadlineeffects true/false will achieve the result that you're looking for (usually good for hide skill bar). But, I advise not too because you can achieve the same result when you use strategies :)

I think that what's on my mind for now, if I remember more, I'll be gladly let you know :)

Thanks for all your support!

These first bits were done before I'd read all the advice on screenshots and the magical tab key. So starting soon will be some good closeups as I catch up to where I am in the story (which is the beginning of generation 3). My current goal is to be more succinct for these chapters. Time's kind of slow when there's only one character, but I promise it'll pick up soon.

Chapter 1: Hunting

The bed was perhaps the worst thing ever invented. Every time Pepper breathed, it creaked. When she could take staring at her ceiling no longer, she got up. Her throat ached and burned. She stumbled into the kitchen, wondering if there was anything in the fridge. It was stocked completely with Plasma Packs. They tasted flat, but eased her throat.

When the mailbox creaked, Pepper rushed out. Another letter from the Watcher? Perhaps now more would be explained. Unfortunately, it was just bills. With less than 200 simoleans, she'd have to do something about that fast. But what could she do?

She headed to the library for some research. Most of the careers listed sounded awful. But she picked out a couple books anyway. It’s all in the Pour was filled with tasty looking drinks. Drinking was something vampire did, so it was a nice fit, but Pepper didn’t think that could pay the bills.

She also searched high and low for a book on vampires. But although there were plenty of books on genies, witches, and werewolves, she didn’t find any on vampires. Her luck wasn't completely bad though. Near the supernatural section she bumped into a handsome guy when she rounded the corner.

"Oh, sorry."
"No, I'm sorry," he said with a charismatic smile.

They shook hands and traded names. Brandon Singleton was running for mayor. Pepper explained how she was new in town, new to the whole Sim-thing really. He was easy to talk to and she was relieved to find no partners lurking in the back of his mind.

"You know," he said after she'd spilled her money problems, "If you're looking for a job, there's a position in my campaign. It's not much but..."

"Yes!" Pepper said immediately. She was still at a loss on how to even begin a job search.

"Uh...great." He said, no doubt surprised by her immediate response, "I'll send a car to pick you up tomorrow, 8:30 okay?"

"Sure." She gave him her address and they said their goodbyes. It was dark as she left the library, but it felt as if a great weight had been lifted from her shoulders. Part one done!

Now to get started on part two. Find a husband. She hailed a taxi.

She didn’t bother with the karaoke bar this time. The place next door looked more promising. Her throat felt dry and scratchy. The Plasma Pack from this morning hadn’t been very filling; her body craved something richer.

As she looked around the bar it seemed for a moment like she could see beyond the clothing and skin to the very core of the people around her. One man seemed to glow and Pepper felt drawn to him. She followed him upstairs and introduced herself.

Despite his cowboy hat, they got along fairly well and she had him laughing in no time. He quickly told her that he was happily married. But they had plenty in common. Eventually she couldn’t wait any longer.

“Can you hold out your arm?”
“My arm? Uh…sure.”

She held his eyes with her own until the last moment when she turned to sink her teeth into his exposed wrist. He was surprised, but didn’t pull away. He was much tastier than the Plasma Pack from this morning.

“So, you’re a vampire?” he asked.
“Yes…” she hesitated. Was he mad?
“I’ve never met a vampire before.”
“You don’t mind?”
“Nah, it’s cool.”

Pepper left the bar a different person. The night was suddenly clear and she could see into every shadow. So, this is what it felt like to be a vampire. She barely remembered calling the taxi to take her home and didn’t mind the squeaking bed.

The next day bright and early Brandon’s coworker Molly came and drove her to the city hall.

She spent the morning running errands for Brandon, but that afternoon she had a chance to meet her two new coworkers. As promised, it was mindless work, but at least she was getting a steady paycheck and could pay the bills.

She spent her days working and her nights, before she collapsed, into be searching for a suitable mate. Everyone seemed to be married or else was completely dull and unattractive. At least she got plenty of practice being a vampire.

There was Gavin, a paramedic at the hospital and he was quite tasty, but they had nothing in common.

Everyone at the fancy bar she tried were married or just not interested in someone who wasn’t a celebrity.

She found a hip bar up the hill from her usual haunts, but then everyone was too young. She had no desires to date a teenager.

On Friday, she was promoted just in time for the weekend. And to top it off she got a phone call from Barrington. He wanted to go on a date. A date? Wasn't he married? Had they broken up? Intrigued, Pepper left immediately for the horse farm. What a terrible place for a first date. They met outside the corral. And she knew something was wrong immediately. Never had she been so glad to get a phone call.

He’d brought his toddler! Not only was he still in a relationship with Juanita, but it had progressed into the next generation. What was his intention? Why had he invited her at all? She didn’t run screaming, but she kept the conversation strictly friendly. At least until night fell. She was thirsty.

She’d tasted better.

Saturday rolled around and Pepper took stock. Week one complete. She’d built a house, gotten a job, learned how to be a vampire, impressed her boss, gotten promoted, and skilled up in both charisma and mixology. She still sleeping in the world's worst bed, but more importantly, she was seriously lacking in suitable men. The only single men she’d run across were:
  • Brandon, her boss. Attractive, but she was pretty sure it was against the law to date her boss.
  • Quincy, AKA cowboy hat number one, police officer, and major bore. Plus, cowboy hat, yuck.
  • Gavin the boring, but tasty paramedic.
Her legacy seemed doomed.

Even her legacy doomed, but she seemed having fun with biting Sims for their blood. The screenshot was good, but I'm kinda annoyed with bubbles thought that ruined that perfect moment!

You're doing good with these screenshots. It match perfectly with the description, I usually more prefer without thought bubble. Mmm, I love how details that you put in the story. I can feel it when reading yours. It's a hard choice indeed, I wish she will find what she looking for...

I hadn't realized how many of my moments were ruined by thought bubbles! I'll have to remember to turn them off in the future. It's been a long week, but without further ado...

Chapter 2: The Beginning

Pepper was attracted to all the wrong men. All too often she would ask the seemingly simple question, Are you single? Only to find they were married.

Perhaps she should worry about her career instead. As a ballot counter she was barely pulling in enough to pay the bills, but the watcher's letter was sitting on the end table and mocked her every morning. To make matters worse, several reporters in town had begun to notice her and were beginning to print their suspicions.

She didn’t mind admitting she was a vampire, but they seemed to think she was evil. That was just wrong. And it meant she would have to be more careful. Rumors would affect her job. Now that Brandon was mayor, he wanted Pepper to run for city council.

She stayed home at night and left only to work, she was beginning to despise the flavor of Plasma Packs. Gavin’s phone call was well received. He cleaned up well.

Out of the awkward paramedic uniform, he wasn't too bad. He was interesting to talk to and they had some things in common since he too was new to town. Although, unlike her, he’d had a normal childhood and remembered earning that high school diploma. She didn’t mention the Watcher since she wasn’t sure he would understand. It might not be the instant passion that you read about in books, but there was comfort growing between them. He stayed over almost every night.

They went steady.

Based on what the Watcher had asked of her, she knew it wouldn’t be long and Pepper didn’t think it was fair to keep him from his part in the legacy.

That night, after work, they married privately in her living room despite the awful uniform.

He moved in immediately.

"You don't have much stuff. When you said you were rich, I expected moving vans."

"Well, I moved into a small apartment. But since I had all this money, I bought that." Gavin pointed proudly at the sports car sitting in the once-empty driveway.

"Um..."

They sold the car and used the money to enlarge the bedroom so the new guaranteed-not-to-squeak double bed could be added. Pepper dragged the dresser back into the bedroom where it belonged.

They had plenty left over even after Gavin insisted on buying a self-cleaning stove.

"You can't live on juice alone, you know."

"Um..."

Despite small hiccups, Pepper was happy. Fullfilled even. She hadn’t realized how lonely it had been and it didn't take long until she knew she was beginning to fullfill the watcher's plans as well.

They built the baby's room next to the new kitchen.

Gavin got his residency and took up cooking in between shifts.

“Welcome home, I’ve made spaghetti and meatballs.”

“Ah…I’m not hungry.”

“You’ve got to eat, you’re pregnant.”

It was kind of sweet how he still refused to believe the obvious. But there was a limit to the misunderstanding. She didn't know if her child would be a vampire like her. But he should be prepared.

He didn’t take it well.

I agree with KRae. Not every thought bubble can ruined your story. Sometimes, a picture with one thought bubble can explain it all without having you for saying the words.

I love all the screenshots that you captured but only one that didn't take really well. That was one before the last screenshot, in this case Pepper thought bubble was already perfect if she was the only one who has that in the screenshot, Gavin thought bubble ruined her moment though.

This is a good development; I'm waiting for the next chapter! Well, if you dislike their appearance you could do makeover for them! Sometimes even an ugly Sim if we do correct makeover will be appealing at least ;D

I love all the screenshots that you captured but only one that didn't take really well. That was one before the last screenshot, in this case Pepper thought bubble was already perfect if she was the only one who has that in the screenshot, Gavin thought bubble ruined her moment though.

I couldn't get Gavin to stop thinking about his promotion that day and I had no idea he would take it badly. He claimed he wanted to meet a vampire, but apparently that wasn't the way he wanted to meet one. At least it gave me something to write about.

Again thanks for all your feedback and help. I'll try to get these out a little more often, twice a week instead of only once. I've been stalled in this game since I got too far ahead and didn't want to give up writing. I didn't even think of changing Gavin's appearance! Luckily he's not very young and I do like his look in the next generation.

So on to the Nooboo!

Chapter 3: Family
To Pepper, her pregnancy felt like it would never end. Locked at home, she was bored out of her mind and Gavin was working all hours at the hospital so she hardly ever saw him. When he did come home, he was exhausted and would fall asleep immediately. She suspected that he was avoiding her.

Gavin decided to celebrate at their neighbor’s house on his birthday. Pepper decided to remain at home. It was a quiet birthday, but he did get some chess playing in.

It was during the birthday party that Pepper realized her long wait was over. She didn’t call Gavin to tell him since he’d just panic, and she was annoyed that he’d been avoiding her.

It took a while, but when the sparkles came…

It was worth it!

“Hello Lightning!”

Gavin returned home to find he’d missed the birth of his child. They spoke long into the night.

Gavin admitted he’d been scared when she’d said she was vampire and he hadn’t handled it well. Pepper admitted she should have mentioned it sooner and made sure he understood what he was getting into.

Before long, it was Lightning’s birthday.

“Make a wish!”

Pepper hurried Lightning to the wardrobe and mirror so they could see what he looked really looked like. He could hardly stay still for the photos.

Gavin stepped up to help with raising little Lightning. He still worked long hours at the hospital, but he no longer took on extra shifts or stayed late. He taught his son to walk.

Helped with the potty training.

And loved cooking up all kinds of meals for the two of them to share. Although Pepper wasn’t sure her son enjoyed the food as much as his dad did.

With two working parents, there was a lot of time where Lightning was left alone. He didn’t seem to mind much as he loved playing with his life-size doll and reading colorful picture books.

Although they wouldn’t know until he was older, they suspected Lightning would take after Pepper. One day they came home and found him snuggled up to the babysitter. They didn't think his baby teeth could have pieced skin, but they were careful to warn babysitters after that.

Often when Pepper was at work, Gavin took his son for walks through neighborhood. If Lightning was a vampire, his time in the sun would be limited and Gavin wanted to be sure he learned to appreciate nature.

Pepper was glad to be back at work and she was working hard to make up for lost time, but she always rushed home to be with her family.

“Did Daddy take you outside for a walk today?”
“Yes!”
“Did you see the sunset?”
“Sunseh!”

On his second birthday, Gavin was proud to bring his son to the cake and help him blow out the candles.
