Moving game from C: drive to D: Drive?

My C: Drive is bursting at the seams, so, I would like to move The Sims 3 to my D: drive where I have ample space.  Any hints, tips and advice, before I attempt this would be most welcome, particularly from anyone who has done this.

I would also like to know if I can download the programs through Origin even though I own the disks, and if this would have any benefits or counter indications.

I added a secondary drive to my computer earlier this year as part of my upgrade.  Carl helped me with all of it and advised me to keep Sims 3 on my C: drive and move everything else to the new D: drive.  Things like pictures, music, documents, Sims 3 backups, etc. are all stored on my D: drive.  It freed up a lot of space on my C: drive and helped the game run better.

Pam, thank you, I understand what you are saying, but, unfortunately, I have already done a major clean of my C: drive and there is not much more left which I could logically move.  I might be able to salvage a gig, but, not much more, so, moving the sims seems to be the only realistic option.

No you don't.  Once you sign into Origin, all you have to do is use the registration key that came with your discs and register each one.  Then you have a digital back-up of all your expansions on Origin and can download them from there.  This is what I do with all my Sims 3 expansions.  I like having the hard disks for my shelf, however, I still have them all on Origins just in case I end up losing a disc along the way.

As far as moving your games from the C: Drive to the D: drive, my husband recently did this for me with some of my games.  I opted to keep my Sims installed on my C: Drive since I end up playing it much more than some of my other games.  So he took those other games and moved them to my secondary storage drive.  I'll ask him once he gets home how he ended up moving everything.

Edit:  I'm sorry, I just asked him and he said that the Sims are different then the games he ended up moving.  He transferred my steam library and that was as easy as telling it to look into another directory from the launcher.  He's not quite sure what moving the Sims would entail

To be safe: uninstall it from the C:\ Drive and reinstall it to the D:\ Drive. That's probably the safest way to do it.

Thank you everyone.  I am feeling a prize idiot right now!    I took another look at my C: drive, and, found I had saved several old game files from when I did my first few factory resets about two years ago, but, not on the desk top, so they were not immediately visible and I had forgotten about them.  That's nearly 30 gig recovered!   So, I won't need to do the move after all.

Note to self, and anyone else who is doing a reset, save the game file to the desk-top, where you can see it easily, if you don't feel confident to just go for the reset, and after copying the files you wish to keep from the renamed file used to hold the old game while doing the reset, delete it.
