“The Dogs Barked”The Douglas family members are reeling from the loss of Radar. But for Millie and Jerry, there is no time for a lengthy mourning period. They have urgent business to attend to.
Millie: Jerry, finally there’s room in the house and we can Try for Baby! Are you ready?
Jerry: Mills, I’ve been ready since we got married, you know that.
Millie: Ok, here goes. Are you sure you know what to do?
Jerry: Just watch me, girl!
Millie: So, did you hear the music?
Jerry: Uh … I’m not sure what I heard. What did you hear?
Millie: It sounded like dogs barking.
Jerry: Dogs?? There are no dogs in Sims 3! But that’s what it sounded like to me as well.
Millie: Well, if we didn’t hear the music, maybe we should Try for Baby again. Are you up to it?
Jerry: I can if you can!
Much later …
The womenfolk cluster round Millie, eager to hear her report.
Christie: Did you hear the music? Well?
Millie: If I tell you what we heard, you’ll think we’re nuts.
Christie: Well?
Millie: It sounded like dogs barking. I know it’s impossible, but that’s what it sounded like.
Wimsey: No! Could it be?
Christie: What?
Wimsey: When I was a little girl, Dad used to tell me stories from the old country, where he was raised. Some of those stories were about a race of beings that lived in another dimension. In the stories it was called the H Dimension. I asked Dad once what that meant, and he said his grandmother told him it was “h’unknown”.
Christie: Fairy tales!
Wimsey: Scoff if you like, but Dad told me that sometimes sounds come through from that dimension.
Christie: Well, since we aren’t sure whether Millie’s Try for Baby worked, what should she do?
Wimsey: She should definitely start eating watermelon. Lots of watermelon. We know that makes the best babies. And we’ll just have to wait and see.
[Editor’s note: Yes, the dogs - the ones in the Human Dimension - barked at the crucial moment. The music could not be heard. We’ll just have to await developments.]
