“
Don’t be Rude to Reporters”
As a newly-promoted Investigative Reporter, Millie has to go where the news is. Sunday afternoon, she dashes to the Stadium to review the game.
After the game, Millie seeks out the Team Manager, Vaughn Strawberry, for an exclusive interview.
Millie: So, Vaughn, another win for the Llamas! You must be very proud of the team.
Vaughn: What? Who are you, little girl?
Millie: Millie Douglas, Investigative Reporter for the Sunset Valley StarPhoenix.
Vaughn: They have
girls doing sports reporting now? What happened, were all the big boys busy today?
Millie (biting her tongue to get the story): Vaughn, to what do you attribute the team’s amazing win record?
Vaughn: Well, honey, it’s hard for a girl to understand, but I’ll try to explain it in a way you’ll be able to comprehend. Winning is all about leadership. If you have the right man at the helm, the team will succeed.
Millie: Let me guess - that would be you?
Vaughn: Aren’t you clever.
Millie: What about the players? Aren’t they important?
Vaughn: Oh, they do their part, but they’d be nowhere without someone to tell them what to do. You know, you’re a cute little thing. Why don’t you buy me a drink at the plasma bar (you can put it on your expense account) and we’ll get to know each other better?
Millie: I don’t think so. So, let me make sure I understand: my father and uncle, who are the best athletes this town has ever seen, had nothing to do with the winning streak? My great-great grandfather who owns the Stadium will be interested to hear this.
Vaughn: … you’re one of
those Douglases? Look, honey, I was just kidding. Say, look how late it is. Gotta run!
Millie returns home to write up her report on the game.
Excerpt from Millie’s report: “In closing, Sunset Valley is fortunate to have such a high calibre of athletes. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the Team Manager, Vaughn Strawberry, who is a pompous self-important windbag.”
Millie’s boss reprimands her for that comment but not too severely as Millie’s family also owns DooPeas Tower and the newspaper at this point.
