“Conversations and Birthdays”

Sleuth teaches Molly to talk.  You may remember that Sleuth is our artist; he has never been very interested in practical matters.  So when the topic of money comes up with Molly, it’s pretty clear that she’s the one doing the talking:

As soon as he gets a chance, Sleuth changes the topic to something he’s more interested in:

Molly becomes a child.  Her new trait is Bookworm.

One of her first wishes is to become best friends with James.  As the old raven listens in, James talks to Molly about fishing:

He apparently feels she is ready to hear about the topic of death.  Perhaps he is explaining the Dynasty rules to her:

Molly tells him about her plan to make bags of money.  She certainly seems to have an interest in this subject.

That evening, Millie has her elder birthday. She wants to look her best for her meeting with the Elders’ Council, so she immediately schedules a trip to her hair colourist and the clothing store.

So, all your immortals go to an elder council to learn about ambrosia?  Cool twist.
What?  Grannies can't play games?

“Millie’s Interview”

The Immortals troop in to the Founder’s Room and take their seats at the large table.

Soon Millie will arrive for her induction ceremony.  There had been some anxiety over the delay in Molly’s birth, but they all know Millie has completed her Dynasty tasks.  Mojo happily anticipates the formalities soon being over so he can serve the outstanding nectar he brought along.

Millie arrives.

James:  Welcome, Millie.  We’re very glad this day has come.  So you think you’re ready to become immortal?

Millie:  I am.  Here are copies of my curriculum vitae.  [she gives each Immortal a copy of the following document]

James:  Yes, indeed.  Very well done!  Now, you must keep this death flower with you always. [handing it to her]
Millie:  I’m ready for the interview.
Sleuth:  Interview?

Millie:  Yes, I knew you were going to ask me how I plan to use this precious gift of immortality.  I’ve been thinking about it.
James:  Ah - yes.  Please continue.
Millie:  Well, I want to say first that all of you have given me excellent role models for how to use one’s immortal time:  James, with your discovery of new fish species and the way you imported the new musical instruments for everyone in town to enjoy; Wimsey, with your dedication to creating beautiful and useful sculptures; Sleuth, with your portraits and your many masterpiece paintings; Christie, and the way you have made Hogan’s Diner the top eating establishment with your contined striving for culinary excellence; and of course, Mojo, my father - SV’s top athlete - since you started working at the Stadium, the Llamas have never lost a game!  And then there’s the way you Immortals started Clan to be the first ever band in SV.  And the way many of you continue to give to charity.  So all I can say is, I hope to follow in your footsteps and contribute to my family and the community.  I am presently working on my third Masterpiece, which I hope will be a best-seller, or at least a hit.

The Immortals sit in bemused silence.  They feel flattered by Millie’s praise, but at least one or two of them are wondering if it was a mistake to send her to journalism school to learn interviewing techniques.

Mojo:  Yes, well done, Millie.  Now, if we’re finished -

Millie:   Now that you’ve interviewed me, don’t I get to ask a question?  Fair’s fair!
None of the Immortals quite know what to do.
Finally Wimsey speaks up:  What do you want to ask?
Millie:  What I really want to know is this:  what happens when we reach the end?
Wimsey:  The end?

Millie:  Generation 8!  When we have 8 immortals living here, then what?  What do we do then?  What happens to us at that point?
Christie:  Well, we really haven’t thought about that, dear.

Millie:  Maybe you haven’t thought about it, Christie.  But [pointing at James] I know he has.

Your moving right along there.  So glad it has all worked out and it looks as everything is going to plan.  I really enjoy this story. ;D

Millie and James lock gazes and sit looking at each other for a long moment, while the other Immortals look on in stunned silence.

Finally James speaks, calmly:  Aye, and what if I have thought about it?
Millie:  Well, don’t you think you should tell the rest of us?  What’s going to happen?
James:  I said I’d thought about it, lassie - I didn’t say I had all the answers.  We still have two full generations to bring up and a lot can happen in that time.  There may be new towns to explore, new skills to learn - or we could all be wiped out by a meteor.  We’ll just have to wait and see.  Now, Mojo, where’s that nectar you brought?  Don’t you think it’s time we opened it and drank a toast to our latest Immortal?

The meeting ends.

I loved that Elder's Council, especially when Millie nailed James.  Very well written, Schipperke.

As always, wonderful story. Didn't expect any less from you. I agree that Elder's Council is excellent idea and you carried the story really great. Love reading it. And Milli is a great Sim, I'm glad she make it to the immortality.

“James and Grim and the Ethical Dilemma”

On the afternoon of Jerry’s 99th day, as he is painting, he starts to feel lightheaded.

He pleads for a little more time, but Grim is unmoved.

James runs after Grim to talk to him before he disappears back to the netherworld.

James:  Well Grim, my old nemesis, you’ve taken another one of my family.
Grim:  Number seven!  You so-called Immortals certainly send a lot of business my way.
James:  Aye, you’re gloating now.  But Jerry was the last of the Mortals.  There’ll be no more business for you here.
Grim:  I’ll get you all eventually.  It’s just a matter of time.
James:  Forget that.  You’ll never get me or my children.  Now, you evil old buzzard, leave!  We don’t want your kind here.
Grim:  Evil, is it?  Well, Mr High-and-Mighty, you and I are more alike than you’d care to admit.

Grim continues:  You think because everyone but you has died, that nobody remembers how you stole all the cars when you came to live here.  But I remember.  And I know that you still haven’t returned Agnes Crumplebottom’s car, even though you have enough money to buy hundreds of cars.  So who’s the bad boy, James?

With that parting shot, Grim (who always likes to have the last word) vanishes.

James is left pondering their conversation.  Much as he hates to admit it, Grim had a point.  James always sends someone else out to pick up the mail because he hates seeing the “return car” reminder on the mailbox every time.  And he certainly could afford a new car.  But he wonders, who would he return the car to?  Agnes died with no children.  Agnes’s sister, Cornelia Goth, was the mother of Mortimer who married Wimsey.  So the only people in any way related to Agnes at this point are the members of James’s family.  He wonders what he should do.

He decides to go fishing and contemplate the matter.

I laughed so hard at this!! I had to share it with my husband and he gave it a chuckle. It certainly is a dilemma for James to contemplate.
