Hi everyone.  I'm beyond frustrated.  Every town in the game is continually failing to play.  I've brought this problem to the forum before, recently, but no one was able to help.  The essence of the problem is this:  The clock doesn't keep time.  It jumps in slow sporadic intervals even at speed 3, or it doesn't move at all for hours although the game is moving.  The characters will take over a minute real time to carry out one interaction.  At a community lot if there are several characters there, they don't move for what seems an eternity.  They just stand there.  If I ask more than 1 character to interact, one will move, then the other and it can take minutes real time.  Sometimes a town will play for a while seemingly fine.  Others will break down in minutes after starting new.  I can close tonight with a working game and tomorrow when I start up, it's broken.
One other thing I've noticed - in the files when I delete the 4 package files (and mod error files) every time I play, they no longer disappear when I hit delete.  They remain showing highlighted.  When I go to the directory bar at the top and click Sims 3, then they disappear.  This only happens in the Sims 3 files.  Nowhere else on my computer.

This problem started when I bought and loaded Island Paradise.  I've done factory resetsets, uninstalled and re-installed IP, all the game tricks resetting town, sims, etc.  I've removed mods and put them back.  I uninstalled the entire game and reloaded it and started new scenarios.

I thought maybe it might the video card and I bought a new one, MSI 7770 (supposed to be able to handle Sims 4).  But that has not fixed this problem.  I run a clean computer 8mg ram.  There should not be a problem.  My son who is quite computer literate, is unable to offer any more suggestions.  I feel the problem is within the game itself, as I'm experiencing no other problems with my computer or other games.  If I can't fix this, I may abandon the game.  I'm totally unable to play it like this. :'(

If anyone can help me, I'd be most grateful.

Hi Bear.

Can you give us a link to your other thread that deals with this same issue?  I'd like to be able to read through it.

Also, you said your new graphics card will support Sims 4?  That sounds a little odd to me because, as far as I know, the specifications for Sims 4 have not been released.  And besides that, something that will supposedly run Sims 4 won't necessarily run Sims 3.  It's two different games, two different engines, etc.  And where did you get the card?  Did someone help you with it?

Hi Pam.  The thread is "Technical Help: Game clock not working".  I had help with the video card, I got it at Tiger Direct, a computer store.  The card was an upgrade from my older one which was GForce 6800.

Did the person who sold it to you actually tell you it would run Sims 4?

Yes, he also recommended it to someone else he knows who plays the game. He felt the problem may well have been my video card, but now I don't think so as it still exists.  But I figured I'd keep it and be ready for sims 4.

Beardeaux,

Pam is a real whizz with this game.

She may be able to confirm if this is worth a try for you.  I'm just an ordinary player.  However, I did have problems similar too, but, not as extreme as yours, when I installed IP.

I uninstalled the entire game.  Then I did some housekeeping on my computer.  I removed all the games which I no-longer play and moved the rarely played games to an auxiliary drive in order to free-up a significant amount of space on my hard-drive for paging functions.  I then ran a complete disk clean-up including a defrag.

When I reinstalled I did not install ST as this is the EP I like the least of the ones I own.

My game now runs well, so I presume that I was pushing the limits of my computer's ability and/or had too little free space on my hard-drive.

Pam, do you think that this is this worth a try for Beardaux?

Hi Wai.  I thought of all those things.  I'm not a game player and have no other games.  When I reinstalled I put the game on another drive to free up space as well.  I did think that may have had an impact.  I defrag and cleandisk weekly.  My son doesn't believe I'm pushing the computer.  It's quite capable of running this game.  This problem occurred when I installed IP in mid July.  I've been plagued since then.

I've been playing Sims 2.  What a treat just to watch it work. ;D

Yeah, it bothers me that he recommended this card for Sims 4 because those specs aren't released.  I don't see how he could possibly know this card will run it.  Sims 4 won't be released for almost a year.  So, this casts doubt on his ability to know whether this card will run Sims 3, which is the real issue.  It makes me suspect he didn't really know what he was talking about and that's always a real problem in a computer store.  We'd like to think they can answer these questions, but many times they can't.  Further on this point, I looked up your card and compared it to the one I put in my computer earlier this year.  Carl picked it out for me and it's supposed to be quite powerful.  There are lots that are much more powerful, but mine is supposedly a very good video card for Sims 3.  And, seriously, it will barely run the game.  It doesn't act like I really wanted it to.  But it gets me by for now.  So, anyway, here are the specs for your card and mine.

MSI 7770:

640 Stream Processors
1GB 128-bit GDDR5
PCI Express 3.0 x16

Radeon HD 7850:

1024 Stream Processors
1GB 256-bit GDDR5
PCI Express 3.0 x16

Now, I'm far from a technical expert, but you can see where my card has higher marks (1024 Stream Processors and 256-bit).  I have no idea what those things mean or how important they are, but maybe you still don't have a powerful enough card.  It's a possibility I think.

As for other possibilities, you've said that you have done all of the suggestions and tricks that we can think of.  You've done a complete un-install and re-install of the game?  Wiped all of it from your computer and started again?  If you haven't (and even if you have), I think you'll have to do it.  I also suggest you do the manual un-install.  You'll find the topic for that here.

I just saw what Wai said and the response.  Those cleanup procedures are definitely important.  Bear, how much space do you have on the drive running Sims?

My computer is set up to run Sims 3 on my C Drive and all of my other stuff is on a storage D Drive.  I don't know how Sims 3 would run on a drive other than the main C Drive.  It's a 300 GB drive and I'm using 163 GB, the vast majority of which is Sims 3.  The game really is just a beast to run, as Seabody says.  The longer it's installed and the more that's added to it, the more power it's going to need.  Now that we're at the end of Sims 3 releases, most of us are having to wrangle this massive beast!

My thoughts on other things...  if you're doing a clean re-install, Island Paradise shouldn't be breaking the game.  However, if you've got all of your old files still in the game, that could be part of the problem.  The Twinbrook file you mentioned in the other thread is massive.  There's really no surprise that your game is having a hard time with that one.  It's possible that it could be affecting the entire game.  You might have to take a hit and wipe out all of your old games.  I've had to do that more than once and I know it's not fun, but there are times when you just have to start it all from the beginning.  As a very final attempt to fix this, I would remove the entire game from your computer and re-install it fresh.  Add back your Store items, but nothing else.  Not even the mods.  If you have a freshly installed game with no mods, no CC, and no old save files and it still won't run right, you'd have to look back at the video card and/or the other specifications of the game.

I'm sorry I seem to be rambling on and on.  This is a tough problem you've got and I'm trying to get all of the possibilities out there for you to look at.

Hi Pam.  I really appreciate the time you've spent with me on this issue.  I did do my uninstall through control panel.  I had no problems with it or the reinstall.  Yes, my one town Twinbrook is massive but the only thing I've encountered with it is the time it takes to load, about 5-7 minutes.  It's always worked well.  Also, When I reinstalled, I left that game out for a couple weeks, thinking as you did, the size of that file may have done something.  My son also thought so.  I went through all my towns and had to delete most of them.  I was left with 4 that seemed to be ok.  Now only 2 are running and they are small.

My son also feels this new video card should run Sims 3 just fine.  I also had Radeon.  Actually when you mentioned that, I realized that was the previous one.  The Gforce was prior to the Radeon.  I'm not going to worry about sims 4 yet.  My C drive is 230 GB and is only half full with the sims on it.  The only things I don't have installed are Super Natural, Movie Stuff and Into the Future.  My external is a terrabyte.  Space is not an issue at this point.  I did leave the mods out for a week to see if that was a problem, but no.  I only have UC from this forum and no other CC.  All sims 3 store stuff.  I've also got the new patch 1.63.

I've tested this game every way from Sunday, and the problem persists.  If I have to delete all the games and start over from the beginning I'll have to sit down and cry.  (violins please)  But it would certainly give me things to do.  I'm sitting here contemplating this egregious step.

Yes, except for error trap.  I see it's just been put out today.  I've not downloaded it yet.  I run Master Controller & MC cheats, Overwatch, Traffic and Error Trap.

I don't use mods myself, but from what I understand of them, it sounds like you've got them under control.

I really am baffled about this.  You've done everything I can think of to fix your problem.  Is your old Twinbrook file one of the two that's still working?  How long have you tried going without Island Paradise to see if it's really a problem?

It's late here (3:20 a.m.) and I'll be going to bed soon.  It might be tomorrow before I can answer back.

I copied the Twinbrook town in case it konked out.  I tried both.  The copy is not working (I've deleted it) but Twinbrook still is.  I had left the island out for a couple weeks at one point.  Things went well so I put it back in.  The game has gone downhill from there.  I'll check in tomorrow.  4.30am  here.

Try running the game without Twallan mods. For example I don't use them anymore. In some worlds the Overwatch was giving me lag problems because resetting over 1000-3000 vehicles (just in one night) which was ridiculously high.  For cleaning periodically some stuck townies I'm using the resetsim * cheat. That's for in-game.
For out-game, I don't have the latest patch/expansion so I don't know if it breaks the gameplay or the game files .

To clarify, if you can run TS3 comfortably, you should be able to run TS4 well. TS4's engine is way better than TS3 as far as reports go. It's built on GlassBox, the same engine as SimCity 5.

Forgive the random tech nerd ramble, but C:\ is by default where Windows is installed. That's essentially it. Assuming I had a drive mounted and partitioned at drive Q:\, I could run TS3 off that if I installed it there in the first place. You install it to a separate drive when you install the game, it's an option. In fact, you could, in theory run the game off a USB. I do not recommend this. Next time you reinstall, take a gander at the option. It defaults (on Windows, at least) to C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3. Don't change it if you don't know what drives you have.
