After all the discussion over how the best friend requirement works, I'm now really confused on which interpretation of the rule is correct or if there is even a consensus any more. Maybe I'm just being thick. However, my new laptop comes in tomorrow and I'm itching to get back to playing my dynasty once everything's in place again, but I'd like to return to it with completely accurate knowledge on who can be best friends with whom.

3. Decide which 3 you want to be unique. Decide it now. Then the others can be taken by anyone you wish. Keep in mind that with 3 EPs you need to be careful of giving just anyone whatever LTRs you want. You don't want to run out of options!

That goes for any requirements. Decide what is unique for your Founder now. Trust me, it's just better that way.

Again, is that just a common practice or requirement?

This one is still unanswered.

It's not a requirement no, but it can be helpful to you in the long term to have a bit of forward planning, so basically it's your decision to plan ahead or not.

I know the feeling, I was totally confused by it all and not sure if it meant I failed or not, so thank you Metro for saying I'm still okay.

My impression now is that we can have best friend overlap, as long as nobody claims the same person, I think what Rica said on page 265 was a valid point about it especially when you get a few generations in and the older immmortals do become instant friends with people due to charisma skill, I know mine do.

It does not say 6 unique.   Each immortal has to choose 6 different Best Friends to claim.  I don't know about the rest of you guys but there was a point in my dynasty where the first four immortals couldn't meet anyone without being an instant best friend with them.  They're celebrity and almost supermaxed charisma was better than a pocket full of potent friendship elixirs.

To my knowledge, we have always interpreted the rule to mean the best friends can overlap, as long as they are claimed by only one Immortal Sim.  For example, Christopher Steel could be best friends with both Carina and Nectarine (wife and daughter).  However, only Carina claimed him as part of her requirements.

I was under the impression that your example would be invalid -- I thought that if Christopher was best friends with Carina and Nectarine, he couldn't be counted for either. A claimed BF had to be unique in all senses. I could be wrong, but that was always my interpretation.

I've always interpreted it the way Pam explained it. Two sims can have the same BF but only one can claim him.

Yeah, I had always thought with this Dynasty, that the friends could overlap, but only one could claim it.  I know it's different for the Life States Dynasty where they have to be unique.

Yes, Pam's explanation of the best friends requirements was my understanding of them for this dynasty as well. I always thought that the purpose behind the totally unique best friend requirement of the Life State Dynasty was to add an extra point of differentiation between that Dynasty and this one.

Oh and wish me luck. I am trying the Immortal Dynasty in Barnacle Bay (yes, I know about the special seeds issue) but I have 'a cunning plan' to get around that. No, I'm not sharing it with the forum in case it fails brilliantly. :D

Pam's explanation of the BF requirement is correct. It's different with the Life States Dynasty where there is no "claiming" and BF must be totally unique to heirs.

Thanks Metro. Now my founder can befriend the whole town in peace! (She has most of the charisma challenges done, so it's nigh-impossible to not do that)

Double post, but crap, crap, crap!

So I got a new laptop. I installed all of my EPs and SPs, and my metric ton of store content. But I get this message when I hover over what is actually my most recent save:

I'm at a loss. My most recent intact save is from before I immortalized my founder, got generation two to young adult, got him a girlfriend, traveled to Egypt, and got him halfway through his profession as a ghost hunter. I'm ready to punch something, really.

If I can't recover those files, I think I need a new founder. My founder's first real attempt succumbed to weird file corruption, and after this, I have a biting feeling that she's cursed. :P

Trip-

There are some posts on google about this error, some have found fix for it.  You want to try this out?  I copied and paste the post here:

I made a new game, made a house, saved the game into the name of my backup (for me its the default "Sunset Valley". looking at the files, I replaced the ones that seemed the most different.

I replaced "Sunset Valley_0x0859db3c.nhd" and "Sunset Valley_0x0859db3cExportDB.package" from the files from my backup. and it worked! the loading screen had the default anonymous family image and the house picture of the newly created game, but when I loaded up I was in my intended family's lot. I promptly re-saved as a new file and backed it up. Remember- this was for the ""cannot load this save game. It may have been saved with expansion pack data that is no longer present on this system." Error, not the 'serious error'. though you may want to give it a swing anyway.

1) make a new game
2) save it
3) copy .nhd and .package files from your backup and replace the newly made ones.
4) re-save the neighborhood

I'm a little worried about using my backup since it was five saves in a row that had that error. I'm hovering over Save P-20 in the screenshot, but all the ones back to P-15 had the same error. I'll see if it works, though.

EDIT: No dice. I tried replacing the files in a copy of my most recent save with the files from my most recent save and then from my most recent working save, and the file still can't be opened. Bummer. Thanks for the advice, though.

Trip, Azokka had a similar issue with her dynasty I found something that worked for her on the official forums, took me a while to find the post but it's here, perhaps it can fix yours as well.

As you just reinstalled to a new laptop the meta data might be the issue with your saves, new configuration on the laptop yet old info stored in that file.

You might just be a life-saver. Do I have to get the greenlight from a higher-up first, though? I'll do it in a copy of my save to test it out, just to be sure.
