This story getting more interesting! It's more than just boy meet girl story, indeed :)
I was fascinated with the screenshots as usual, their expression, pose, background scenery were priceless.

Savna reminds me of Nellaska when she's with the cousins - I imagine that's what Nellaska would do had she'd been followed around all the time by a bunch of gossips.

Ha ha. Nellaska would probably have shanked them both with a butter knife by now.  But I really did like the way that picture turned out.  I'd never used the "Gossip" interaction on seated Sims before and the expressions were pretty hilarious.

Well, intl-incident, it's official. This is the greatest thing ever. You've won that hands down and bagged the trophy, for real. ...I seriously don't know what else to say. I love how you're writing Jaffaran and Savna's relationship. The bawdy, charming young man dancing his way through life and the dutiful daughter who does what's expected. I love it.

ZOMG, thanks. That's an extra-special comment coming from someone whose Dynasty Founder had Hello Kitty on her butt. ;) (Seriously, your Hideous story is awesomely hilarious!)  I'm glad the relationship is coming off as I hoped.  That's the hardest part! I didn't want it to just be like Romeo and Juliet where they see each other for all of ten minutes at a party and it's all "Hey, Julie, U R TEH HOTNESS. Kiss me. And now marry me." "OMG, Romeo, you're an awesome kisser. That's enough for me, let's do this thing, even though our families hate each other and we're both kind of already engaged to other people." <-- (Abridged version) I mean, I love me some Bard, and I can get past not knowing why the Montagues and Capulets are tearing up Old Verona.  But I have never been able to stop myself from rolling my eyes at the ridiculous love story (which I guess is kind of central to that play...) ;)

Even with a little word said, the scenery itself tell the story!

I'm so glad you said this.  That was sort of the goal -- to make the pictures tell the basic story, and then flesh it out with the text. So it's working, yay! :)

Good job! Now, I just waiting for the next installment to find out more

Thanks!  Hopefully another update tomorrow, if I can finish up the rest of the post tonight.

I ran straight home from the tavern, not stopping until I was safely inside and up the stairs to one of the private corridors -- well, private except for my cousins, who came running as soon as they saw me.

"Savna, what happened?"
"Where did you go?"
"Why are you crying?"
"We were looking for you!"
"Did you go to the tavern? Someone said you were in the tavern."
"She must have been in the tavern.  That place is horrible. They have a DOG in there."
"Well, what's wrong with a dog? The dog didn't make her cry."

All of a sudden, I found myself laughing instead of crying.  They were ridiculous, both of them.  I had always been so wrapped up in how miserably boring they were, but if I really thought about it, they were completely, utterly ridiculous.  And as I realized that, it also dawned on me that Jaffaran was right. If I didn't want to listen to them bicker, I didn't have to.  I could steer my own ship, right past them, and right down the hall.  What could they do?  Follow me until I got to my own room and shut the door on them?  Tell my brother or father -- what, exactly? That I didn't listen to them argue about a dog in the tavern?  None of it mattered. What was I so afraid of?

"It was probably one of the miners who made her cry. They're all rude."
"They are not all rude. Some of them are perfectly nice."
"Oh, like Baric? Don't think I don't know you find him handsome."
"I do not! And besides, he likes Drelliana."
"No, he doesn't!  Why do you think he likes HER?"
"Well he doesn't like YOU, that's for certain. He's not blind and he's not deaf."
"Oh! You didn't say that!"

By this time, I had dried my eyes, and I just kept walking.  They didn't even notice me pass.

The next day I was back to work in the craft hall, and the day after that as well.  After work was the same lineup of duties, and responsibilities, and family dinners and conversations with my cousins, but I didn't care -- where before I might have chafed at restrictions or lamented my responsibilities, instead I took them all on with a smile and a light heart.

And on that week's free day, after I had gathered up my courage and straightened my hair and practiced my smile in front of the mirror for an hour or so, I even more cheerfully told my cousins that I wouldn't be joining them for dancing lessons or tea and jam, or any of the other usual free day activities they were always dragging me off to.  When they demanded to know where I was going I told them it was none of their business.  And then I simply walked out of the house, into the sunshine, and off to where I knew I would find my target.

He was digging around in Astanal's hooves as I stepped into the stable yard, and chattering to the stallion again, as though he were speaking to another person.

"...always tramping through the mud, and picking up gravel, and-- what is this, you great lumbering beast? It's half an apple! Were you saving it for a snack, or just too slovenly to care?"

He tossed the filthy, trodden-on apple core aside and patted Astanal's flank.  "That should do it. But stay out of the orchard, would you?  Or don't come crying to me again when you have fruit stuck in your shoes."  He reached up to stroke the horse's muzzle as Astanal nickered his thanks, and that's when he saw me, and favored me with his dazzling smile.

"Lady Savna!  Free from the gaggle once again."

"I am, thanks to you."

"To me? I promise you I haven't tied them up in the basement."

I laughed, and shook my head at his teasing. "No, I came to apologize. And to thank you."

"I shouldn't have spoken to you that way," he replied. "It was far too forward of me."

"Yes it was," I agreed. "But I know you meant it in a helpful way, and more importantly, you were right, and I needed to hear it.  I have indeed been unhappy and I-- wait. What's he doing?"

Astanal had stepped up next to me as I was speaking, and now his breath was ruffling my hair as he sniffed at me.

Jaffaran watched the inspection intently and curiously, then nodded to the horse when he finally took a step back. "There, see? I told you she was fine. Just like Torin." It was a cryptic comment, directed to the stallion, not me.  To me, Jaffaran simply smiled again.  "Astanal was just saying hello," he explained. "And he likes you."

The horse twitched his tail at that, his kind eyes seeming to confirm Jaffaran's words as he watched us speak.

"I-- All right," I said nervously.  There was something strange about whatever had just happened, but I couldn't figure out it was that unnerved me.  "Do you always talk to your horse like that?"

"I'm sorry you've been unhappy," Jaffaran prompted.

"Oh! Yes.  About that."  A nervous little laugh escaped me before I could stop it, and I felt like a complete fool.  Jaffaran was watching me with an expression somewhere between amusement and -- I hoped -- affection.

"I heard that you and Torin were riding out to the old stone ruins today. I want to go with you."

But instead of flashing the smile I was hoping to see,  Jaffaran rubbed at his neck with a reluctant wince. "I don't know if that's such a good idea..." he started.

My face fell, and my cheeks flushed bright red. "No it's fine. Of course not. Not at all. I just thought-- But if you don't want me to go, it's all right. It's fine." I fluttered my hands, as if that might erase everything that had just happened, and started to turn away.

But Jaffaran softly caught hold of my arm to turn me back. "Savna," he said gently, "I want you to come.  It's just that--" He hesitated, waffling about what to say. So I put on my best hopeful smile, and waited, nervously.

He finally relented, with a short laugh and a shake of his head. "All right, fine," he said. "But promise me you'll listen to me if I tell you not to go somewhere, or do something.  There can be dangerous things in those old ruins."

I promised, and we rode out a short time later -- Jaffaran, my brother Torin, a few other friends and I.  It was a beautful day.  The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the company was better than I had enjoyed in what seemed like a lifetime.  I couldn't imagine what Jaffaran was possibly worried about.

Those ruins are just so beautiful. I wanted to create something like that but failed and end up just using the arch. The silly cousins make me laugh, good thing Savna isn't bothered too much by them now.

Savna cousins are hilarious, I was laughing with Savna! I don't mind having someone like that in my life ::)

I love the building; I always wonder how people made something beautiful like that! That must be taking a lot of practice, hard work, patience, dedication and something like that... And just looking from your work, I believe that you really enjoy your creation so much and it must be a part of something that you love even that can't be realized in reality. I notice that you're not Architect as your job in real life. You did a great job as always, intl_incident. *claps*

I always wonder, what will I be when I grow up. Do I will end up with something that I loved? Or I’ll end up with my parents’ decision? To be honest, I don't want to grow up, real world is scary not like The Sims...

Savna cousins are hilarious! I wouldn't mind to see them in later update!

As always, splendid! Your work is beautiful. Sorry, but I lack word to describe it.
Do you use Photoshop or related application to edit the screenshots?

Just curious :)

Thanks, everyone, for the nice comments.  I really loved those deco pieces from Dragon Valley as soon as I saw them.  This particular lot I may upload to the Swap Shop after I have a chance to play-test it.  It's set as a fishing spot, so it might be useful for people in Dragon Valley or elsewhere.  And you're right, Eldridge -- I do like making things in the Sims that I can't do in real life.  If I had a chance to go back and re-do any part of my life, it might be to try to become an architect instead of what I do now.  But I can't really complain about my current job, either.  I guess that's just life:  not enough time to do everything we want.  So I'll make do with the Sims instead. :)

Luna, I do use Photoshop on my screenshots.  I crop them to forum size, then add a border, and for these flashbacks I also add an "inside glow" to give them that fuzzy edge.

And now, without further ado, on to Chapter Eight!

We started off with a picnic, and it was the most enjoyable thing I'd done in ages.  Not just because of the good food and the beautiful weather -- the weather was always beautiful on Ajri -- but because I managed to find an excuse to lie down next to Jaffaran, who put his arms around me.  It was like heaven.  And my brother didn't say a word either.  Now that I think back on it, I suspect that at the time, both of them still regarded me as their little sister, and so thought nothing at all about the embrace.  But I enjoyed it for what it meant to me, if not to Jaffaran.

Some of our friends had brought fishing poles, and Torin had brought a ball, of course.  My brother loved nothing quite so much as a good ball game, and he gathered up anyone who wanted to play after the picnic.  I expected Jaffaran to join, but when I looked up from where I was picking up the dishes and the leftovers, I didn't see him in the mix with the other players.  Astanal was grazing quietly in the shade, so I knew Jaffaran wasn't tending his stallion either.

I dusted some crumbs away from my hands and set out to find him.  He was exactly where I expected he would be, poking around inside the old ruins.  Like any of the other den'Rhelys teachers I'd met, Jaffaran was always curious about everything around him, even things that most of us would find mundane.  In this case, though, he'd found something interesting.  He was drawing a picture of the strangest tree I had ever seen.

My boots rang against the old tiles that covered the floor of the ruins, giving me away to Jaffaran just as I came to the stairs.  I held up a hand to say a simple hello, but clearly I'd startled him.

"Stay where you are,"  he said sharply, holding out his hands to ward me off.  His notebook dropped to the ground.  "Don't come down here."

I stopped in my tracks, with a bemused smile for his tone. "All right," I said, perplexed by the urgency. "I was just coming to see where you'd gotten off to.  The ball game is finishing up, and we'll be leaving soon.  What's wrong with coming down there? Is there a wild animal in the bushes?"  I smiled as I teased him, and took another step toward the stairs.  He moved over a step, angling to put himself between me and the tree, still holding out his hands to stop me.

"You're not listening," he said.

I started to protest, laughingly, still not sure what all of the fuss was about.  But Jaffaran looked more serious than I had ever seen him. "I did promise I would listen," I replied slowly, watching him with a curious gaze.  He watched me back, warily. It was all very odd.  I slid down to take a seat beside one of the large pieces of fallen stonework. "How about here?" I asked. "Far enough?"

His stance relaxed as I sat on the tile, though his eyes were still worried. "It'll do," he said. "Just promise me you won't touch this thing."

"So many promises," I chided him. But he didn't look in the mood for a joke.  I put one hand on my heart and held up the other as I would for a solemn vow. "I will stay up here as long as it's necessary, where it's safe from... whatever that is. I've never seen anything like it.  It's beautiful."

"I suppose it is, in a way," he replied, turning back to his examination of the tree-like structure. "What I can't understand is how it's grown so much. We should have seen it before it got to this stage."  He pulled a weathered old parchment out of his pocket, poring over whatever as written there.  I could only see the back of it, which was badly faded and hard to read.  I didn't recognize any of the words, which I might have taken for total gibberish if they hadn't been laid out in such precise lines and handwriting.  There seemed to be a diagram, too, that looked a bit like the base of the crystal tree. "You said you've never seen it before?" Jaffaran inquired, still looking over the strange notes. "When were you last out here?"

I had to stop and think about it.  We had come out here all of the time, decades ago when Stellan, Torin and I were all children.  We'd clamber up the fallen columns, or play as family elders holding court in the collapsed hall.  My mother had always worried that one of us would fall down the giant hole in the floor, but my father had encouraged us, and said there was good fishing down there.  We had kept coming as young adults, until recently.  Those had been wonderful days, back when my father and older brother were the people I remembered, not the strangers they had become.

"I think it's been about five years," I said to Jaffaran.  "Maybe five and a half."

"Mmm hmm," he said absently, still reading his old parchment and squinting at the crystals. "And when did your father -- forgive me, Lady Savna -- when did your father begin to decline?"

"What does that have to do with anything?"  I asked, tilting my head.  I must have sounded defensive as well as perplexed, because Jaffaran finally looked up fro his reading.

"You don't know what this is, do you?"

"What, the tree? No, I just told you..."

"That you hadn't seen it before," he repeated. "Which means it must have grown to this size in five years or so, and that's a problem.  This isn't a tree, Savna. It's a root."

Now I was well and truly confused. "Roots grown down, not up," I pointed out.

"From our perspective they do, yes.  But things don't look the same from every angle."  He circled the tree, staring up into what looked like crystal branches to me, and I wondered what angle he was looking for that would make a root grow up toward the sky.

"I don't understand," I said.

"No, I suppose you don't. But I think this may be the reason your father has changed.  It's close enough to have an effect at this size, and according to the old texts, one of the first signs that the root is waking is that it seeks out power and tries to corrupt it.  Your father would be the nearest, best target." He turned back once more to the parchment full of strange words and drawings. "There's got to be a way to  destroy it..."

I could only follow a portion of what he was saying, but the last part was clear.  "Can't we just break it, or cut it down?" I skipped down the steps, hands out to try to see what the root was made of. "It looks so fragile."  Up close I could see that there were even gaps between the segments of the branches. It was impossible that such a thing could stay upright.

In a flash, Jaffaran was between me and the crystals, holding tightly to my hands to keep me from touching anything.

"Don't," he said simply.

"But I just--"

"You have to understand how dangerous this is, Savna.  That root is from the other side of the gate.  It's burrowing into our world, trying to find an avenue for the powers there to come back to Ajri. You cannot touch it.  You cannot go near it."  He was staring directly into my eyes as he spoke, gauging my response to see if I was listening this time.

I was lost for a moment in the golden amber of his gaze, full of strength and of knowledge that went deeper than I had ever realized.  It was also full of concern for me -- not for Ajri, or my father, or the crystal oddity behind him, but for me.  I started to answer, but before I could say anything, to let him know how much that concern meant to me, or that I would do whatever he asked of me, a breeze blew around us, strangely unsettling.  I could feel it on my skin, but there was no rustling of leaves, and no ripples on the water.  The horses started whinnying on the other side of the pond, and Jaffaran took me by the arm to steer me up the stairs. "Out," he said. "Now. We're going back."

I let myself be herded up the steps, but stopped at the top, just long enough to turn around, put a hand to Jaffaran's chest and stop him in his tracks.  I didn't know when I would have this chance again, so acting on pure impulse I leaned in and kissed him.  I got more of his nose than his lips, but as far as I was concerned, it was perfect.

Thank you for the reply, intl_incident. I'm sorry for you to have read such a message. I have a mood swing that day, I might want to avoid comment in someone story when I didn't feel better from now on while my brooding mode is activated ::)

Without further ado this is the comment:

I can see more of their name is unusual for me. Do you use foreign name too or that name is something that you create yourself? Did the name that you chose have any meaning? I usually pick name that have meaning to fit the character personality.

This is really interesting development, especially with those words *sparkles eyes*

As always this is a wonderful writing. I learn one-two new words from your story into my vocabulary after searching what it means. Thank you, intl_incident ;D

I have been reading your story for a while now, and I must say that I am really awed by the screenshots. Fantastic scenery everywhere. The characters are all very engaging, funny and mysterious. Somehow, since Ajri sounds like a paradise, I cannot imagine how such a world can have any conflict in it.

The poses of the Sims, especially the ones when they were having a picnic, are stuff I have never seen before in my own game. How you did that is absolutely marvelous.

For now, I'll just keep on reading.

I have a confession. :) I actually started building these ruins a couple of months ago, as part of a foundation-based building contest on Mod the Sims.  I wanted to make something loosely based on Lord of the Rings, and I was going to have the Tree of Prosperity stand in for the White Tree of Gondor.  But I ended up stopping halfway through the build, and making a Star Wars Cantina instead.  When I needed a good site for this story, I pulled out the half-done ruins and finished them.  And the Tree looked perfect to me to use as the evidence of evil coming back to Ajri, especially with all of the colors and effects you can get out of it.  So I'm glad it's working for you too!

Hopefully I will have time to fix the routing issues that the lot has sometime soon.  If so, I'll upload it for sure.

Aww, your comment was fine. I'm glad to get any comment, and yours are always interesting.  No need to apologize!  As for the characters' names, they are mostly made up by me.  'Stellan' is apparently a name in Scandinavia, but that was not on purpose.  I had an old role playing character named Stellan on a game a few years ago, and so I just re-used it for this character.  In fact, Nellaska and Meridel's names are from old roleplaying characters my friend had on the same game.

I'm glad I'm helping you with your vocabulary.  I travel a lot for my job (in fact I am on a trip to Austria right now), and I live overseas a lot too, and it's always easier to learn new words when you see other people using them, rather than just using a dictionary, I think.  I used to take a notepad with me when I would go watch movies in Warsaw, because the movies were in English, but the subtitles were in Polish.  So I learned a lot of new words that way. :)

Thank you for such delicious update, intl_incident. As always I love everything that you created. The screenshot, the pose, the writing especially that BUILDING and scenery. Oh, there is definitely trouble coming.  Maybe not for just for Jaff and Savna, either... Glad you liked the update!

Yay, another reader! :D  I'm so glad you like the story and the scenery.  I have been having a lot of fun making things up and trying to get screenshots to look like I want them to.  For the picnic, I used a combination of poses from the pose player, and animations that I tricked the game into playing for me.  For example, when Savna is kneeling down to put the dishes away in the second screenshot, I used 'moveobjects on' and 'buydebug' to put a plant there for her to garden from.  As soon as she crouched down to garden, I paused the game, took the plant away, and put all of the scenery in place. It's a lot of work sometimes, to get everything looking just as I want it, so I'm glad you're all enjoying the end result!

I'll try to get an update done in the next day or so, but I may not have a chance because I'm travelling.  It shouldn't be too long of a wait, though!
