New user, any helpful tips?
« on: October 18, 2013, 11:10:32 AM »
Hello! My name is Morgan.  I've been playing The Sims for about 5 years now but I never went far- just made a baby then quit. I recently discovered this forum and can see all the things I can do. I am now playing Sims 3 with the Expansions: World Adventures and Generations, hopefully more soon! I am wanting to try the Dynasty's Challenge but as I said even though I have been playing I only considered myself a beginner. I still am trying to understand the challenge and wondering if there is any tips you have for a beginner or something easier I could do to begin? I just want everybody's idea!  :)

Sorry to bother! Hope his was the right place to send this
Thanks!

Also, if anyone could give me the basics of this forum, how to make a profile picture and all that? I've already read the rules :)

My only suggestion is to read the guide. It's full of useful information and a great reference when you have questions or problems.

Welcome!

Don't be afraid to try things just because you're a beginner. One of the best ways to learn about the game is doing a challenge, so if you want to do a dynasty, put your best foot forward and see where you end up. Even if you fail, you probably learned something along the way. But if they feel overwhelming for you, you could look at the Projects Board for something to do, since projects are more informal than dynasties.

There are probably other great things to try, but I'm the sort of person who needs goals to play the game. :P

As for getting a profile picture/avatar, you can edit your profile after five posts, and that includes getting an avatar.

Could you point me in the direction of the guide? Sorry for the stupid question!

Ahhh! Thank you so much! Thank you both! I'm looking forward to even more replies! I've been viewing this thread without an account for 2 days and just made an account! I was scared to make one, silly me! What exactly does the term dynasty mean?

Also you can only get vampires, witches, mermaids, etc if you have the correct expansion pack? You can not make or buy them?
Oopsie! Just learned how to edit a post! And what is the Tapatalk app that goes along with this website?

1. Dynasties are the forum's multi-generational challenges. They usually involve "do x goals before getting y reward." We have four of them, and the rules for them are on sticky threads on the Challenge Board. And they're loads of fun to play.

2. Yes, those life states are acquired through having the EPs that they came with. So you'll get mermaids if you have Island Paradise, or witches with Supernatural.

So in such, if the Mother, Crista, has a child that is the first generation, and if that child has a child that is the second generation and so on? I really love Pam's Dynasty!! <3

Anyone know what the app Tapataka that my iPad wants me to download for this website is?
Also how does Origin effect gameplay of the Sims?

I'm glad you like my Dynasty. Is it the Immortal Dynasty or the Townie DecaDynasty. I have stories for both.

The generation count depends on the challenge. For example, the founder counts as thefirstgeneration in the Immortal Dynasty.

Tapatalk is a mobile application for the Forum. Unless you plan to use a mobile device to access the Forum, you won't need it. Plus, it costs money to use.

Origin is just the online delivery system for Sims 3. It has nothing to do with gameplay.

As far as the dynasties and challenges, they are great if you don't mind the rules.  For me, that doesn't appeal and I enjoy the project stories.  I have more control and less rules.
What makes it great is the variety for those who have different tastes, so as far as the dynasty challenges and the projects, check them all out and see what one fits for you.  Or create your own personal challenge.
I did my own personal dynasty, set the number of generations, goals for my sims and didn't limit myself to set areas, rules, and used the motherlode to help with starting funds.

Ask away with questions, I have and still do constantly ask questions, try things out and go help! quite often   ;D  .

As for expansion packs, there are several, and what they offer vary, there is a section that has a review of all of the expansion packs in the guide.  As someone stated, go to the top where it says guide and it will take you there look on the list on the left side that has a variety of topics and you can learn a lot of what the game offers and tips on how to play the game.  A GREAT help and I constantly go back to check things out when I am need some info.
I love the search engine they have here also, and the fact that I can ask follow-up questions when I don't find what I want.  The people here are great to provide the help that is needed.

A brief info on what I do have on expansion packs, WA (World Adventure) is travel destinations, and you don't have a home town.  Pros and cons on it, there can be some bugs on it, but I think it is worth it.  SN (Supernatural) has a town, Moonlight Falls, and if you like the though of playing vampires, werewolves, faries, witches or just being a human, then it is a great one.  It has a Victorian feel, with enough "dreariness" to give it that mystical supernatural look.  Each expansion pack has something special about it, and some will appeal to you and some won't, it is all a matter of personal tastes.  What some like others don't .  I don't like Pets, but that is me.

Hope this is of some help.

Just a quick note, since you're seeing the Tapatalk message, I'm guessing you're already on a mobile device. I keep reading these board from my phone or iPad and it's much easier. Tapatalk as it cleans up the interface and doesn't make you zoom in to hit buttons.

I did see there were paid versions, but I'm using the free versions for Android and iPad without any issues. So i'd recommend using the app if you're often on a mobile platform and if there's a free version to use and you feel comfortable with it. This is my first reply using Tapatalk so hopefully that works out as well.
