Savvy Seller set
« on: September 28, 2013, 02:52:58 AM »
Well, I've had a good play around with running a shop and found out a few thing.

Even though one of the guru's said you could run a shop from your residential lot, it's very hard if not impossible. I set up a shop on my home lot with everything I needed. I had a door that I set the opening and closing hours. I had items to sell on rugs and shelves and I had my sim tend the till from 9am to 5pm every day for two sim weeks. Not one person stepped inside to even look. I went searching on the official forums for help and someone said that most (if not all) premium content only works for the resident if it's on a residential lot. Someone else said that people didn't know the shop was there and if you threw a party they would know! I'm not sure about the party idea because by the time I read that, I'd already scrapped that game file and decided to try buying a commercial lot for a shop.

You can't sell items that you salvage from the junk yard! I thought that might be a good way to make money without any out llay. Wrong.. seems sims don't want to pay money (even at an extremely high discount) for junk lol

Items that are sold, are automatically restocked at no expense to you! After my junk sale failed, I bought myself a new bed and put my old bed on a rug at my store. I set the price to 100% which meant it would sell for the same price as the catalog item - in this case $450. People were buying the bed all day and I kept seeing +450 rising up the screen, but never saw a -450 go up. I was making thousands each day! So after the initial cost of buying the items, you can't help but make very easy money.

If you have items outside the shop, people will continue to make purchases after the shop is closed and no one is tending the till! Actually, tending the till seems to be a waste of time because people will just walk up to an item and buy it there and then. You set the shop hours on the door and once it reaches closing time, nobody can enter the shop, not even the owner, but if there are items on rugs (and I presume it is the same for shelves) outside, people will still buy them.

@Twinmum:

I'm wondering if running a shop should have its own thread.  It's not specific to Midnight Hollow is it?  I mean, you can do it in other towns, right?  Also, did this same thing come with some Premium Content at the Store awhile back?  I haven't played it, so I'm not sure what all is involved.  And I think I accidentally bought the standard version of Midnight Hollow and don't have the extras that came with the gold version.

The Savvy Seller set is premium content that comes with both the standard and gold edition of MH - the extra content in the gold edition is the toy shop and Titanic toy making machine. I actually wondered about where to post about the Savvy Selling stuff as it can be used in other worlds, but you can't get it without buying MH.

The other thing I was thinking of is the Business as Usual Bistro.  But that's apparently not the same as Savvy Seller.  You can go ahead and make a separate topic for this, I think.  Just split this topic starting with your post about it and make a new one with it.

Another thing to note with this set is that you need to be careful where you place rugs. If they are under a light fitting, the light fitting will also be for sale. Although this isn't that big a problem with the automatic restocking.  I read too, that if a rug is up against a wall, any light fittings or windows in that section of wall will also be for sale. I haven't actually tried that out, but I did sell a light or two before I realized what was going on.

This is great information, thank you!  Was wondering, if it's automatically selling the windows and wall lights.. do you think if you put a masterpiece painting on the same wall and remove the wall light,  that it would sell as well?

Probably not because paintings don't have a set price. I'm just about to have my dinner, but when I'm done, I'm going to have another play with a few things including paintings to see what happens.

I had a bit more of a play around. First I put an easel on a rug and painted a picture. Visitors to the lot didn't even glance at it. I had a couple of easels set on rugs, but visitors quickly decided to use them too to paint pictures. I hung the painting on a wall with a rug touching the wall under the painting and again, nobody looked at it.
You seem to be able to place anything on the shelves, rugs and pedestal, but only sellable items will actually attract attention. Not sure if you have a number of items on a shelf, pedestal or rug and one item is something that can't be sold, if that will effect the sale of the other items - that might be my test for today!
You can stack the shelves, but if you have one above the other, it can be tricky to stock both. I found it easier to place a single shelf on a piece of wall, stock it and then move it above or below another already stocked shelf.

Has anyone tested if Sims can sell their made-in-game items (like paintings or inventions, for example) with the Savvy Seller's premium content? Or is that only for buy-mode items?

I haven't tested it myself, but others have, and EA has confirmed that only buy mode items (and I think the new toys that come with the toy machine in the gold edition) can be sold with this set. Craftables and collectables cannot be sold. I for one am disappointed.

We already have a thread for this set. I'm going to merge this thread with that one.

Thanks Twinmum for double checking if the easel/paintings would sell. For me it was a very hopeful longshot!  ;D

Me too. It is far too easy to make money the way they have it set up. I like the town, minus the savvy seller joke of a premium content set.

Thanks for all the testing and tips on this savvy seller set.  Items that are sold, are automatically restocked at no expense to you, that is just so unfair.
