My sims is in Sunset Valley and when I try to load him it comes up with "A serious error has occured while loading 'Sunset Valley.sims3'. It is strongly recommended that you restart this application". Now I have restarted Sims and it comes up with the same message.

I have never had a problem like this before and I am looking for suggestions to fixing the problem.

Many Thanks.

Have you tried restarting your computer?

Have you looked into your Saves folder inside the EA folder? There's a chance that the file could be corrupted but the game should have created a back up file that you can replace your file with. If you look here it tells you what you should be looking for :) I hope it helps; it saved my Sims at the start of this week!
Grr Argh!

I had a problem similar to this a while ago.  Unfortunately, the backup file was also corrupted, and I lost a family I had been working on for several months.  Gutted.  Since then, I rarely use the 'Save' option, and instead go to 'Save As', and I alternate between a few file names.  So, when everyone has gone to bed on day 1, I save my file as (e.g.) Twinbrook 1.  Then the next day when everyone has gone to bed, I save as 'Twinbrook 2'.  Day 3 I swap back to 'Twinbrook 1' and so on.  That way, the very worst that could happen is I lose 2 sim days of gameplay, rather than my entire game.

Welcome to our Forum, nstev79!

That's a great suggestion.  I do the same thing with my save files.  Thanks for mentioning it.
