Error Code 12, unfortunately, has never been kind to me (it crashes during the save, not after it's completed, so no backup available). I used to get those when doing a Save and Quit on the file - I now get around it by doing a Save (or Save As...) separately, then when the save is completed, Quit (just exit).

Also, I might have been abducted by aliens, by I've been beating them off bit by bit (some ridiculous idea about me posting my own 4x4 Dynasty, but I'd rather see what happens when Hayley steals the car right outside her room, and goes joyriding off her roof).

No, I made tons of saves before it but they all disappeared...

Wow, that's a new one! If you had saved, say, at the last birthday, and then it crashed when you tried to save again, it should still be able to launch from the last save point.

I assume the .backup is also launching from the save point of where the non-backup is?

Well, I was aging up everyone in the house except James and Corina, and saving after every makeover because the game was being generally buggy at that moment. The last person to age up was Agnes to elder. After she'd done her makeover, I tried to save. It said
An unexpected error has occurred while saving: Error Code 12. Please consult the readme for details.
I thought, all right, no need to worry as I saved two minutes ago. I quit the game, restarted the computer, and went back on sims. I clicked the newest saved game and was about the click the tick, when I realized this was the Racket Family. I searched through my saved games and the CrumpleFour x 4 save file wasn't there.

All I've decided so far is it's of course going to be a 4 x 4, and I might do the Fours, but a different founder or something... or try to do the same thing, making it the CrumpleFours....

Rikki, have you looked on your computer for a backup copy? If you've been saving with the same name every time, the game should turn the previous save into a backup. Error 12 crashes sometimes mess up the whole process but you may still have one. They're not visible in the main menu but you can see them if you go into (My) Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Saves. The folder will be called [your file name].sims3.backup. If you rename it and remove the .backup bit, it should then open in the game.
