    • Carl's Sims 4 Guide
I probably said it some time ago, but have to put it out again that I'm rather burned on playing The Sims after all these years and I'm sure that is something many of you can understand if you've been with us from the beginning. It feels like Sims 3 is winding down, while we await Sims 4 and fresh gameplay. With the Guide at 500 pages, I'm putting off any remaining work on TS3 for Into the Future when I can do it all at once and be much more efficient. Time's a valuable thing and the more I enrich my life with new people and activities, the less I have to be spent behind a computer taking notes. I will never stop calling myself a gamer, but the long days playing just aren't as appealing as they used to be. Having a new project that challenges me and offers me new game concepts and mechanics to explore is very welcome at this point in my life. Thanks as always to the people who have been so supportive of me even in the worst of times. For now life is good and I'm excited to be taking my writing in a new direction. I've never covered a turn-based strategy game before but enjoy the notetaking and analysis it takes to come up with guides. Though my interest in The Sims may take a dive from time to time, I'll always be back to keep informed on what's going on here and how the community's doing. I just wanted to point out I'm purposefully very busy with something else right now, and things haven't excited me this way in quite some time, so I'm happy in my chosen profession. Nothing Sims can bring such enthusiasm for writing out of me without a new game and that seems less than a year away.

Civ 5 is a project that I started covering over a year ago, then set aside to work on other things. I never thought it'd amount to much beyond a few visits a day, but its developer, Firaxis did a good job developing the Expansions for the game, and with the Gods and Kings and Brave New World DLC it is probably the best Strategy game I've ever played. I was thrilled to see readers swarming the site overnight with the release of the latest DLC, so set literally everything aside to pursue the project. After all, I had a few dozen pages with incorrect information and that severely bothered me. It messed with my morale to know that my own work was playing against me, making me look like a fool to people that don't understand that patches and DLCs will make extensive changes to gameplay. Unable to do anything about the ignorant, I set out to work hard and get this thing done. I am almost done with the corrections - a few pages aside - and feel there's plenty of quality material to show off or at least explain my absence.

This past month I have been very busy developing it so am not ashamed to show off the Civ 5 Strategy Guide I've worked on to any fans of the franchise among our Community. I play at level 6 (Emperor difficulty) but find that some victory types are harder than others at this level. Through the losses and struggles, I've become a much better player so have a lot to say about the game. Right now, my agenda stands at 79 pages to go and this is a solo project, so I'll be on it for quite some time. That'll put the Guide well over 100 pages - there are 43 different Civs to play, all other gameplay aside. I expect to be distracted from this site and working on Civ for the rest of 2013, aside from a (hopefully) short visit to cover Plants vs Zombies 2 (an experiment into casual gaming on my part) and, of course, The Sims 3 Into the Future EP.

The only section of the Civ Guide that I am not proud of is the Leader List. There you can see major flaws from outright wrong information to patches changing gameplay for the better but making my writing a complete waste of time.  Some of the updated pages, namely China, Aztecs, and America are receiving a better reception than the drivel I put out in order to have a complete leader list. I learn as I go! Other Guides are great resources for newbies - City Management and Output, Tips and Strategies, Great People (Scientists, Artists, Engineeers etc.) and a Wonder List I am quite proud of, because they are thorough and provide key information to newbies. With them I accomplish something I seem to be capable of doing a decent job at in this field, getting all the information into one spot to make it conveniently available. Most information on any game is known, but it's often scattered around the web and needs fact-checking and extensive playtesting. Especially with the game so vastly improved since its release over two years ago.

If you're an avid player, I encourage you to look over my stuff and help me to improve it by using the comments system on the Guide. Otherwise, thanks for your time and for being a member of our Forum. Cheers to you all and I wish the best to each and every one of you. A big thank you to the staff here for allowing me to pursue my Professional dreams outside of Sims and write for other games as I'd always intended. Things got so much bigger here than we ever anticipated, and without them I'd be forever here just trying to keep up. Each and every one of you have my respect for the time and effort you put into this Forum and your continued dedication to its wellbeing.

Now to go sink another several hundred hours of gameplay into learning the ins and outs of every Civ leader! I can't wait for the project to be done, but thankfully still enjoy the game enough that I wake up each day excited to investigate the game and what article I'll be writing to cover it that day :)

Thanks for showing it to me Carl. I do like Civ V, it's one of my top relaxation games even if I'm not very good at it. After spending some time on your guide I'm sure I'll improve.

I have also heard good things about the new add-on and will look in to that too :)

Ah, Civilization 5. I've actually refered to your guide on occasion, but I'll definitely be reading up on it once I get it back installed on my computer.  :D

I was hoping a few might like my work there. I know I don't have to but justifying absences here makes me feel a little better, plus I'm sure plenty can relate to feeling that way about Sims from time to time - needing a break to make it truly fun again. I guess for me, that's probably not coming until Sims 4. I don't know *everything* about TS3, but a lot of the element of surprise has been ruined for me, and that's a key component for me in the enjoyment of a game.

I just did a major renovation of my list of Civilizations in Civ 5, Brave New World, and Gods and Kings, which is sure to be informative for people who might be interested in the game, or want to know what leaders you get when you buy the DLCs. Several Civs are free on Steam, while others can be caught during sales from time to time. Even at full price, Brave New World is worth it, anyway. What's unique about my list is that it displays the difference between all the Unique Units and Buildings each Civ gets to replace a basic Unit/Structure, all in one spot - something the Civ selection screen is sorely lacking but I am happy to provide. Eventually that'll have links to strategies for all 43 Civs in the base game, all DLCs and Expansion Packs.

I won't get into marketing all my additions to that guide here, just thought some players might enjoy knowing of such a feature - it's a sort of buyer's guide along with resource for helping you pick a Civ and formulating a strategy, build/research order or intended Victory Type.

Your post on Civ V got me intrigued, and I went back to it. I just picked up Brave New World, and have to say that I love this game now. I probably won't win my first attempt at a Cultural Victory, but I'm learning a lot. I'm enjoying all the great works, and I love having archaeologists. I keep going back to your guide, trying to assimilate all the information.

There's only one problem -- I feel guilty about neglecting my sims.

That's what I'm loving about the project. As a Guide writer, it's like covering Sims in the number of different gameplay elements there are to cover. So, so many valid ways to play that can lead to victory, but many mistakes to be made on the way to success. I'm glad the guide can help you and want to try to keep the information of high quality so that it doesn't lead to someone believing something that I got wrong. It's not such a big deal to make an error when it happens in Sims unless I cause a Sim to die or they were playing a Challenge, but misinformation in Civ can really hold you back. That's slowed development a lot. I upped my own difficulty so that I can be absolutely sure I'm helping anyone playing under difficulty 6 (emperor) or 7 (immortal). I'm not touching Deity yet. I'd just be wasting my time, I think.

I have a vague recollection of having played Civs, (earliest versions), awhile back, but after winning time after time it got kind of boring.  Sims3 came along and I fell in love.  Now, I'm kind of yawning at playing Sims3 a bit and interested in playing Civs again.  Don't have any Civs game at the moment so where should I start and is Steam the best way to go?  So glad to see you writing so many different guides!  You make my game play life so much easier so sending you huge cyber hugs and thanks.

I'd recommend Civ 5, and you might as well get it through Steam. I bought it retail, but had to install Steam anyway to play. There are two more expansions -- Gods & Kings, and Brave New World. If you get Brave New World, you get the features from Gods & Kings, but not all of the civilizations. The two expansions add religion, caravans, spies, and great works of art, music, and writing -- all of which I enjoy -- so you might want to look for a deal that combines the base game with one or both expansions. I think if you look on Steam, there's a demo free game, which you might want to try before spending $30-$60.

You're welcome! Glad you like my other work. As Marian said a bundle might be your best option, but try the demo first just to make sure you're into it. Unless there's a sale Civ 5 + BNW will run about $50. As she said, the last EP is the way to go and Gods and Kings will literally only give you extra Civs to play once you own it. Some of them are fun, but it's not worth the price tag unless you can get it in a bundle with the base game as I did, then grab BNW separately. I got the original + G&K for only ~20 during a Summer Steam Sale but think you wouldn't see such a great rate until Christmas.

Thanks for posting this. I was unaware of the sale, and this explains the surge of visitors I've seen the past 24h. Development there is going slowly due to a hectic life and some massive PC overheating issues that took several days to get fixed.

Maintain your PCs people and get that dust out of there. For a couple of months at least, I was running hot and that causes the processor to automatically throttle back to save itself these days. I only noticed when it started idling at 92 Celsius... I'd forgotten, but am now going to make sure I do a quarterly check on the inside. Compressed air should prevent things from ever being so bad on me and I'd advise all Simmers to read up on cleaning your heatsink/fan and doing it right to avoid having to remove it all and reapply thermal paste - after all, if your processor is not running at its best, it is going to lower the number of Sims in the game when the processor throttles back. I look forward to covering Into the Future because it will be the smoothest experience I've had with the game, despite the extra slowdown from Expansions because of the Overclock I was able to do when I got things cooled down.

Still checking in here, but my attention is 100% on Civ 5 until Into the Future :)

There is a public beta of the fall patch that helps with War penalties and applies some nice improvements to a few Civs and I am participating.

Thanks MarianT, I manage to pick up civilization V for 75% off yesterday.  Game looks extremely difficult, feels like I'm going back to college again.

Nutella, I'm so glad someone was able to take advantage of the offer! Carl has lots of good tips on his site, but if you're just starting, I'd recommend just going ahead and playing.
