Pregnancy starts when you hear the music after woo hoo, from that point onwards eating fruit will count.

A rough guide from running this in my head (it's been a long week) seems 65% is about as high as it will go either way which I think was changed to this in one of the updates. To get to 65% 3 fruit are needed, any more are ignored. If I get time I'll run the code outside the game and confirm.

While checking this out I noticed babies conceived in an igloo get the likes cold trait.

I've also completely forgotten until the last minute and practically shoveled them into her on the day she was scheduled to give birth and gotten my preferred gender - but that may just be luck). A lot of this would require someone who can read code and/or is willing to do extensive testings.

Yep, it doesn't matter when only that it's during the pregnancy. Oddly the fruit eating does not rely on the normal pregnant state that stops a sim from doing various activities, changes into maternity wear etc which is set later.

Thank you, I was wondering if someone knew the actual percentage. :)

I think I've seen the actual percentages, maybe from Seabody. I would never ever depend on only 3 fruit to get the gender I want. There have just been to many times when it didn't work out. This will always be my position on the matter.

I go with Pam on this one, as many babies as my sims have had, and I love for them to have babies, when I go to pick the gender and remember to use the fruit, if I don't have her eat at least nine, then I do not get what I want.  And the nine is pushing it, it seems that the magic number is 10 of whatever fruit is needed.

One of the reasons I stay with the after the twirl and bump is that I have had her eat  six or seven fruits before the bump and then four or three after and not gotten the one I wanted.  It could just be luck of the drawl, but for me, I just go with better safe than sorry and have her eat it after she does the twirl, and eat 10 fruits; five the day she twirls and five the next day.  I don't think I have even not gotten the one I wanted doing it that way.

Others will have different results, so it is trial and error I think for each person, on what they think works.

I had my sim eat 10 watermelons as I wanted a girl. So she has her baby, and it's a girl, so was happy with that. Then the pop-up comes up saying congratulations on your baby boy, as she ended up having twins!
Silly question, but was is the "twirl"?

I'd say it more just luck, or bad luck, depending on how you look at having twins.

From what I know, and those who know code can correct me, but twins aren't common unless you do specific actions; procreation elixir (which has never worked for me)or the fertility treatment (if both male and female get the reward then you have a higher chance of triplets) or listen to the kids radio and the kids channel on tv.
Reading the pregnancy books, at least for me, never had an effect on my sims having twins, just tv and music.

Those who know code better can tell you if the twirl has anything to do with number of babies, but I think it is just to give the visual proof that she is pregnant.

The pregnancy announcement spin. It's the spin your Sim does when they change into their maternity wear for the first time, when the camera pans to them and they then usually rub their hands over their belly for the first time to indicate pregnancy. :)

I've relooked at the code and then ran a few tests and it used to be higher but now the cap is at 65% which is 3 fruit.

Test results over 1,000 pregnancies eating apples:
no fruit: 50% male
1 fruit: 55% male
2 fruit: 60% male
3 fruit: 65% male
10 fruit: 65% male

A bit of math from the game, these are tunable in xml:
kMaxGenderOffset = 0.15
kGenderOffsetPerFoodEaten = 0.05

As you can see the maximum offset is now 0.15 (15%) which is added to a 50%  base giving a maximum of 65%

I'd say it more just luck, or bad luck, depending on how you look at having twins.

The base levels are quite low, it's 5% for twins and 1% for triplets, though it's random so there is no memory in the system, you could go a long while before any of these happen and there are other factors that come into play, the code is a bit messy.

From what I know, and those who know code can correct me, but twins aren't common unless you do specific actions; procreation elixir (which has never worked for me)or the fertility treatment (if both male and female get the reward then you have a higher chance of triplets) or listen to the kids radio and the kids channel on tv.
The tv and radio provide a multiplier per hour watched/listened up to a maximum of 10 hours. The twinkle in eye ^^ buff also helps.

Reading the pregnancy books, at least for me, never had an effect on my sims having twins, just tv and music.

The pregnancy books affect the mood of the parents after birth.

Those who know code better can tell you if the twirl has anything to do with number of babies, but I think it is just to give the visual proof that she is pregnant.
indeed, just a visual cue.

The "twirl" is when your sim changes into pregnancy clothing and gets the pregnant moodlet.

Oh yes, THAT twirl...lol....into the ugly maternity clothes! I even made maternity outfits in preparation but she still wore ugly sweat pants with high heels LOL. I wonder if "lack of fashion sense during pregnancy" can cause Celebrity public humiliation lol

The trick to her wearing the clothes you designed is to have her change into them before the twirl.

I did do that before (as the first pregnancy she wore my outfits). I'd forgotten I'd changed her into them before the twirl. Dare I say it, the one thing I actually miss about the PS3 version was when your sim was pregnant, instead of the twirl, you'd get a nice pop-up window congratulating you on the pregnancy and you'd be sent to CAS to plan your maternity outfits.

I think I've always eaten the fruit before the twirl. I seem to always hear that lullaby chime, but then I usually wait for the "run to the bathroom" confirmation before eating fruit. I don't think I've ever had the baby, after eating fruit, and it has turned out the opposite gender. But I'm still relatively new to the PC version, maybe it's different on console?

If that is the case then you didn't chose maternity appropriate clothing for her to wear. They are limited to the sweats/short sleeve shirt with a long sleeve shirt underneath it from the basegame as well as the spaghetti strap dress from the base game that's usually plain or has sheep on it.
Other clothings could be gotten from the Generations Expansion pack (not too many extras though, but enough to expand it a little). There are more I'm sure, but those are the ones that always come to my mind.
