Sims 3 with all expansions running slow
« on: August 11, 2013, 06:58:01 PM »
I've installed Sims 3 with all EP on my new computer ( Intel i5 3550P quad core, Sapphire Radeon 7780 2GB DDR 5, 8GB GOODRam 1666Mhz RAM, Windows 7 64bit with SSD as the OS disc and a 500GB HDD as the Sims 3 + EP destination). I've copied my previous saves from my old laptop (Vista 32bit) to my Sims 3 game and it's basically dead. The game loads decently fast but playing it is impossible. It freezes for about a minute, does something insignificant, freezes and so on. I've already limited display options (23" Iiama IPS screen) but it doesn't seem to help.
What's wrong? My computer should be able to chomp this game like a moist biscuit. It does so with games such as Guild Wars 2 or Company of Heroes but S3 are a problem? Well played EA...  Any thoughts? Should I start a new game? I really want to use my PC's power to comfortably play in high details ><

Edit
It seems like the main problem is cause by the save. New families run fairly smooth. My current sim has a lot accomplished and a buddy mummy and it would be a big pain to start all over :(

Before you give up on the old game, perhaps try a reset all command (in the console, resetSim *) and see how it runs after that. This will reset every sim to their home lot (and also mess with their needs, but that can't be avoided this way). If it runs fine after that, then you should think about installing the Overwatch mod by Nrass, which will, among other things, by default look for and reset sims who become stuck (it also does garbage collecting on things like abandoned cars). This will prevent pathing issues form causing the game to hang.

You could also try using the ErrorTrap mod, also by Nrass. I'm not sure how well it does against saves that already have issues, but its worth a shot if the above doesn't help. It's mostly designed to prevent errors from getting into saves, but it might help an established save cope as well.

I've tried it and no gain. Game speed is pitiful. I thin I'll just have to start over. No idea why is this game having issues with Widows 7 64 :( I've got no idea what to do...

There are still other things you can do without installing a mod.  Have you cleared the caches?  Look in Explorer to see if the file name has "bad" in the name.  If so, the file is corrupt beyond repair.  If not, then maybe try a factory reset.  You can find specific information about these things on our Technical Help board.

Don't do too many resets, or if you do, back them up on an external hard drive (or Dropbox or similar). I recently cleared out my Electronic Arts folder, and freed up about 6GB of space (in fairness, I did have a LOT of old saves).

Just do remember, Sims 3 is a beast to play. Although your computer may exceed the System Requirements, it can be a beast. The game is also throttled and runs at about 2GB of RAM by default. There is an app talked about here that flags Sims 3 as LargeAddressAware (though some players, myself included, have this done by default), and instructions for how to "unthrottle" the game to allow it to run with more RAM than 2GB.

You won't believe what I did, Seabody.  I was cleaning out my game and doing everything I could think of to make it run better when I accidentally deleted my Saves folder.  Then I immediately emptied my recycle bin before I realized what I had done, so I couldn't recover it.  I lost quite a few saves, but managed to find a copy of my DecaDynasty saved in another place.  What a nightmare!

Did the DEP trick with all my .exe files for Sims 3. It didn't help with the old save but a new family runs OK. I'm updating my Windows 7 to check if it will make a difference. GPU drivers updated, DX 11 as well.

Edit
I think...I've done it!!! :) After around 5-6h of searching and trying different things I've used my own idea. Anyway here are the methods I've used:
-assign more RAM.
-disabled DEP for all S3 games. (didn't work really)
-tried installing Error Trap and Overwatch...I think it failed since S3 launchers don't show these mods...
-moving my sims from town to town - didn't work.
I was close to deleting poor ol' Carl and his buddy writer mummy and then I thought about clearing all of Karl's inventory. I've sold every little thing I could. Fruit, diplomas, fish, death flowers...everything! And it seemed to work! I've played for a few minutes and the game runs smoothly. Guess I have to force v sync to make it smoother but good ol' Karl is safe for now.
I think the glitching items were from Uni Life since new diplomas and such appeared in it. I'll play more later and see if it works longer.

BTW
Even though my PC is way too good for S3 the game runs kind of edgy on minimal details. Since I want to play badly I can live with that for now but is there a way to force this annoying game to use all of my PC's power? I mean, come on, quad core + Radeon 7870 XT + 8GB RAM and the only detail level in 1920x1080 is minimum? Ridiculous!

None of the above is necessary, according to Nraas site. If you run 64 bit Windows the game will automatically be able to use 4 GB.

RAM thing is good to know about. Whether it was needed or not, I flaged my exer and upped the RAM usage, just in case. Might as well since it's quick and easy.

As for higher quality and higher resolution, it should be possible, but I can't find the relevant ini file. I've done it in at least two games. Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (and every other game in the series) are too old to support even a 1600x900 resolution monitor, so the size has to be set manually. I also have a custom setup for Skyrim (which has two graphical ini files) to take advantage of some of the stuff that can't be selected in game, as well as things that can be set higher than in game (though my computer can't cope with anything close to what that game can actually do), just to eek some extra performance out of my card.

So there should be an ini file for this game that will let you set the graphical settings.

The other thing you can do is open the Catalyst Control Center (might be AMD VISION now, the name changed from my last drivers. NVIDIA cards have an equivalent, forget the name, should show up if you right click the desktop), and change the 3D application settings for the game (which can be set to override the game settings). This is mostly useful for forcing a particular type or grade of anti aliasing as well as anisotropic filtering, and I also have options for vertical sync (as well as forcing triple buffering), and some stuff about tessellations that I just leave on default. This is particularly useful on older games that predate anti-aliasing, like Jedi Outcast (maxing out the filters does a surprising amount to making the graphics of the last decade less distracting).

I very nearly did something similar. I always bypass the recycling bin when deleting (I often delete a lot of stuff so I prefer to do it quickly). Before I deleted my "The Sims 3 - Casual" folder, where I cheat and mod and everything, I checked through my Saves for one particular save game I am attached to -- an old, non HOF Dynasty, with a HUGE house.

None of the above is necessary, according to Nraas site. If you run 64 bit Windows the game will automatically be able to use 4 GB.

That I did not know. I know that TS3 is allowed to use 4GB on my PC (I'm LargeAddressAware), but I didn't know that 64-bit/32-bit made a difference. Doesn't matter to me, though, I only have 2GB RAM.

In the C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 folder, we have options.ini and worldpresets.ini. I've never tweaked these so I have no clue what they do, but they look like what you may be after. I know options.ini is where your options are saved.
