Author Topic: What are the names of NPC's in different countries installments?  (Read 28551 times)

After reading LlamaMama's topic: 'Are New Townies Random?' another question came up in my mind: for all you players from another country, do the NPC sims in your games have different names compared to the original (American?) version?

P.s. For any moderator out there: feel free to change the name of this topic to something more short and catching, because I don't think the title: 'What are the names of NPC's in different countries installments?' is very good, and to long. But say it when you do, so I can still find it back myself.

Of course they are named differently. For example, Bella Goth is "Bella Spökh" in my game ("spökh" is probably meant to remind people of the very similar, but real word, "spöke", which means 'ghost' and therefore fits well into the goth theme of the Goth family). If you don't mean townies, but NPC supporting characters such as maids; yes, they too have Swedish names.

Just curious; wouldn't you know it yourself Leto if you're Dutch, or do you have the English version?

Well of course I know. :) But I like to know the names of the other country installments to, just out of curiousity.
I have the Dutch version, but I am considering to install the Swedish version on my new system.

I've gotten some strange named sims for English/American names. One woman who worked with my current sim was named Isilli or something like that. She lives in Sunset Valley and works at the office. There's been other people with odd names, or kids who get named oddly...I'll get the best odd ones and post 'em here.

One thing that bugs me is that I'll get fairly common American first names, but they are spelled goofy.  Like "Kennith" instead of "Kenneth" or something.

I have the default American English version installed, but I still end up seeing some very "strange" / surreal names in-game.

I know EA as a corporation (like most) likes to promote / advertise how "diverse" they are, resulting in some pretty "out-there" names showing up.

@ Swede1992,

"Spökh" ... eh? "Spook?" Goth / Ghost?

Languages are something else, huh?

@ Pam,

I've not seen spelling variations like the "Kennith / Kenneth" yet  in-game (and boy-howdy, since "Kenneth" is my first name in Real Life, I'd have noticed that! haha) ... but I'm going to spend more time watching now I've seen this.

I can say, I haven't found any The Sims3 NPC names as flat-out distracting (nor as much as a train-wreck) as "Abhijeet Deppiesse."

I wonder how strange the names look in Chinese? And I'll be pretty shocked if any Chinese folks post answers ...

Yeah, I think "spöke" and "spook" have the same origin (Swedish and English are similar languages at least).
Another example of what they're named in Swedish is that Landgraab is called "Markövertag" (kinda means "land take-over" (sounds more hostile than English IMO)).

I've also not noticed names spelled wrong in my game. Maybe it was a mistake of the game developers Pam?

Just look at the name Gobias Koffee in SV.  Hidden meaning,  My sister pointed it out to me and I had never paid attention, now must find other names that have a hidden meaning.  "Go by us Coffee".  How ingenius.  Now I am going to have to start paying attention to names, darn, ;D, as if I had nothing else to do, lol.

@Saltypaws: Yes, you have to now. No way you will get away with it. :P

@Pam: Maybe the game as a limited list of names used commonly, and when the list is 'empty' after many generations the game will express misspell some names to get new variety or so.

That said: there could be a sort of standard storyline progression in the game that goes from A to B every time we create and load a new town. And the line can only get interrupted by your own sims, when for example marrying a sim in your neighborhood. You could compare to savefiles that takes place in the same town to see if the children or even grand children of the sims in your neighborhood are still the same in each save file. That way, we can confirm this.

I know, I love Gobias's name.  ;) My mom pointed it out to me, and I kept looking for more.

As for odd names, there's the Alvi family, with Miraj and Iqbal (who I think just died in my game  :o He's not on my friend list anymore.), and the weirdo Cyclone (I cant spell his name right, so here: http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/Cycl0n3_Sw0rd  :-[). I know there's more in other cities...Someone wanna help me out?

This is actually a reference to the cancelled Fox show "Arrested Development."  The characters GOB (pronounced like the name Job - played by Will Arnett) and Tobias (played by David Cross) toy with the idea of opening a coffee shop and the name they came up with was "Gobias Coffee."  The pre-made Funke family is also a reference to Arrested Development; the last name of the aforementioned character Tobias is Funke.  He is a never-nude, hence the never-nude trait.  For those of you who have never heard of never-nudes, "there are dozens of us!!!" -- mostly in Germany.    ::)

Iqbal isn't too odd to me because years ago I saw a doctor who had that as his last night name. There's the paper girl Dee Liver, and I know I've seen one or two more. They were in Twinbrook. So I'd advise anyone looking to try there if they have Ambitions. Since I've been busy with the Challenge in SV, I haven't noticed any and have forgotten the ones I knew before.  :)

I forgot about 'Lawd Gyyde' from Twinbrooks. His name is a play on the word 'languid', according to the wiki. I thought Lawd may be because it's a internet term in some places.
