Egypt, not a good idea for mermaids!
« on: July 15, 2013, 07:40:55 PM »
I decided to see what would happen to a mermaid in Egypt.  Definitely not a good idea!  I had to micromanage him second by second in order to keep him wet enough.  The only time he was happy was in the water temple.  Go figure! ;)

I also tried adding a port and building a houseboat.  He was much happier swimming in the "ocean" water, (bright blue), in Egypt so thought that could be a good option.  (Spouse had the ability to own a vacation home there).  Second bad idea!  The water is so shallow that the port looks weird and you can place the base part of a house boat but can't build on top of it as the draft is too shallow.  Next try will be in the dark blue water and see if that works.  In general though, don't take your mermaid to Egypt!

Hi Joria.

I made a slight change to the subject line so it wouldn't look like a World Adventures topic.

I've only just gotten a mermaid (Periwinkle Dreamweaver), so I'm not much experienced yet.  But can't the mermaid stay hydrated enough by taking baths and showers like a normal Sim?

If a mermaid only takes baths/showers to rehydrate for a certain length of time, he returns to being normal. I'm not sure if it's possible to revert on a vacation, but if it's a long vacation I'm sure that they'd need to go in the ocean at some point.

Thanks, Pam!  I'm horrible about knowing what to say and all it took was a comma!

Yes, he can stay rehydrated for a bit, but it is so hot/dry in Egypt that unless he stayed really close to the facilities, and they are pretty sparse in Egypt, he was frequently unhappy.  So his partner wound up doing most of the challenges, and he hung out in the water temple, until I decided to put him in the water near Abu Simbel.  It seems that water is salty and the problem is they MUST get into salt water every so many days.  I even decided to not bother buying one of the gorgeous mansions there even though one has a huge pool.  I might give it another shot since I've been working on trying to install a port there and build a houseboat.  I don't think Shang Simla or France would be any better because of lack of salt water, although much easier to stay hydrated in general in either place.  I'm concerned about them being viable characters anywhere where there is no salt water, so good choices would have to be coastal.

Wouldn't the LTR Permanent Mermaid remove the concern about salt water hydration?

Not sure.  He has that reward but was so dry I didn't push it.  I could do a save as file and find out I suppose.

I haven't played with mermaids much yet, so I'm still pretty ignorant about mermaids.

If it does work, then I wonder if using Shower In A Can would also fulfill the flaky-scale hydration concern...

Shower cans doesn't work for mermaids. Moodlet Manager doesn't help for dehydration either, it does fill their hunger bar tho. Mermaids are just not meant to explore tombs I think.

By the way, boats help getting to Abu Simbel so if you're taking photos take a boat with you.

The Moodlet Manager should remove any negative moodlet.  Are you saying it doesn't remove the dehydration moodlet?

That permanent mermaid reward doesn't help much either.  Mine almost died yesterday.  He went from dehydrated to flat out and it was a miracle his spouse reached him in time.

Somehow I assumed it doesn't, I tried to use it when my merman was on lifeguard job and had those dehydrated moments. The moodlet went away for a second and then popped right back. Now when I tried sending the same merman exploring tombs in China he had no trouble staying hydrated using moodlet manager. Morsel seemed to work for hunger better than kelp! Off topic: if you're planning to explore tombs take sleeping bag with you, tents do stick to tombs and can't be put back to inventory.

LTR Immune to Heat does not help keep your mermaid cool enough and safe from dehydration.  When the heat rose to 92 degrees fahrenheit, the only way I could keep him safe was to keep him indoors or in a deep dive.  Indoors he required several showers to stay hydrated, and once it was cooler he was able to ocean swim to get his salt fix.  My normal human Sim just napped out in the heat or did whatever chores she needed to do with no problems.  She had immune to heat also.  This makes me very concerned for our nooboo who looks just like her dad and will probably be a mermaid when she ages up.

Now I have another idea - does exploring dive wells fulfill the hydration requirement (or whatever the other interaction is, get soaked, I think)?

If the nooboo is up to the toddler stage, her legs will show up as scaled if she's a mermaid.
