It was the day before Lizzy's 40th birthday.  William quietly slipped into the study where Alex was reading up for his university exam.  That was their deal.  He'd work on the ranch in the mornings and spend the afternoons studying.

Alex looked up, "Hey, dad."

William shut the door and came over as Alex rose from his chair.

"I have some jobs for you," said William.

"Sure, dad.  Whatever you need," said Alex.

"Tomorrow is your mother's birthday and I have some special things planned.  But I need your help," began William.

The two men settled in the chairs before the fire after Alex grabbed a pad and pen.  William then set out his plan...

The following day dawned bright and sunny with temperatures already in the 60's.  William made sure that Lizzy was allowed to sleep in as long as she needed.  He woke early and helped get all the kids set and off to school.  Then made a quick trip to the store for a special bouquet of flowers he'd ordered.  Making it home, he was happy to see she still slept peacefully.

The kids had made extra sure to be quiet that morning.  He had lots to do yet so he left the bouquet on her nightstand with a note wrapped in ribbon.

Much later, Lizzy slowly woke feeling more rested than she had in a long time.  Raising six children was more than a full-time job.  The scent of the flowers filled the room.  They were roses - several colors in fact - yellow, white and red.

Lizzy sat up in bed so she could lean in and drench herself in their luscious smell.  Then she spotted the note.  She pulled the ribbon loose that bound the little scroll of paper and began to read...

I stopped at the store to buy you a bouquet
What I found is that it had a whole lot to say
The flowers each stood for a part of our life
And they were meant for you, my beautiful wife

The yellow ones stand for the girls we both know
They're pretty and sweet and always ready to go
They sing little songs and have beautiful dark hair
God gave us two angels for our hearts to share

The white ones represent the boys in our home
There are days that I know they won't leave you alone
They're happy, and smart, and full of such joy
We're lucky to be blessed with such sweet boys

The red one’s a sign of the love we that WE share
Over time we have proven just how much we care
We love in the ways that makes others just wish
And hope for each other with a smile and a kiss

That ribbon that holds the bouquet in a bunch
I didn't get it at first, yet it means so much
It stands for your love in our home every day
As the center of our family in every way

This bouquet in the store, I'll just have to get
The best part of this is, it isn't done yet
There are more flowers to add, more times to have fun
More nights full of laughter, and more days full of sun

So the next time I bring flowers, I hope that you know
Your love means much more to me than I could ever show

Lizzy was in tears at this point and held the note to her chest, "Oh William..."  Eventually she rose and padded from their bedroom in her nightshirt.  She noted how quiet the house was - which was unusual.  She walked into the kitchen and found her favorite cheese danish on the counter and coffee already set up for her to have a fresh latte.  And another note...

Good morning, beautiful wife and Happy Birthday.  Today is all for you.  Don't worry about the children, they're all taken care of and sorted.  You have an appointment at the spa at noon for the works.  Your clothes for this evening will be waiting for you there and I'll pick you up at 4 p.m. sharp.

I love you, my heart

William

Smiling, Lizzy checked the time and gasped  "11:15!" and dashed for the shower.

Meanwhile, William and Alex breezed through taking care of the horses with Thomas tagging along.  They kept a close eye on him but he loved playing in the barns.  Then they packed up their two cars and headed out to the country to set up something special for Lizzy.

Alex left him at 1:30 to pick up Noella and Michael.  They'd hang out until Nathan and Audrey finished at 3:00 and then they had an evening planned of dinner at the diner and then fun and games at the All Star Bowling Lanes.  Alex would have them all home and in bed at a decent hour but William didn't plan on he and Lizzy being home until they were all asleep.

At 3:00, William headed home to clean up and dress for the night.  He hoped everything went off without a hitch.

Sharply at 4:00, William walked into the spa and was shown to Lizzy's treatment room where she'd also dressed.  He knocked softly, "Lizzy, it's me."

Lizzy opened the door and he was speechless.

He'd bought the dress, a deep red satin that molded to her body, but hadn't counted on the impact of seeing her in it.  Her eyes sparkled and her skin practically glowed.  He stepped in, closed the door firmly behind him and then practically yanked her into his arms for a heated kiss.  Mindful of their location, he didn't let things get too far but it HAD been a very long day without her.

Eventually, they parted and she rested her head on his shoulder, "Oh William, I feel like a new woman!  I've been waxed and plucked and polished and smoothed and massaged... you name it and I feel wonderful," she finished with a sigh.

He smiled and held her close.  "That was the plan, my dear.  You deserve the pampering and I'm going to make sure you get it more often," he said.

He gave her one more kiss on her lips and then stepped back saying, "Now madam, we have a bit of a schedule to keep.  And while this dress looks stunning on you, it's missing a little something."  He drew a flat, velvet box from his jacket and opened it facing her.  "Happy Birthday, darling," he said.

Lizzy gasped and her eyes darted up to his, "William!  They're gorgeous!"  Inside the box nestled a gold and ruby necklace with matching drop earrings.  He helped her put them on and then stood back, studying the effect.  He nodded and smiled, "Yes, now you look finished."  He couldn't resist just one more kiss.

Then he presented his arm, "Shall we, Mrs. Darcy?"  She took his arm and they sailed from the room.  Lizzy felt like she was floating on air.

He surprised her by not going for the car but had them strolling down the street.  As she looked around, she noticed something at the end of the block.

"Oh look, William!  A hot air balloon!" and she pointed.

"Well, how interesting," he replied with a small smile.

To Lizzy's surprise, William led her right to the balloon and inside the basket.  Lizzy felt like a kid!  She'd never been up in one before and she couldn't wait.  They set off at a steady pace and she got to see the town like never before; waving at friends and neighbours below.

William stopped at one point and opened a bottle of champagne that had been chilling in a bucket attached to the side of the basket.  He filled a glass for her and then for himself.  Raising his glass, he said, "Grow old with me.  The best is yet to be.  Happy Birthday, my love."

Her eyes were misty with unshed tears but she was smiling brightly as they clinked glasses.

Lizzy was even more surprised later when the balloon came in sight of a romantic tableau set up with dinner for two and a stereo softly playing.  "Oh William, it's too much!" she gasped.  He only smiled and said, "There is no such thing as too much for you, my dear."

They shared a lovely lasagna dinner, one of Lizzy's favourites.

Afterwards, William took her in his arms and they danced under the stars.

It was getting late when they boarded the balloon again and it was piloted to their house; setting down at the front near the garage.

"Come, darling.  Let's change into our suits and have a soak in the tub," said William with a gleam in his eye.

Lizzy grinned too and they quietly slipped into the house and headed for their bedroom to change.  While the air was a bit nippy now, the water was nice and hot with steam rising.

"I hope you've had a lovely day, my dear," said William softly.

"Darling you know I have.  No woman has been more pampered and made to feel so loved," she finished and leaned in for a kiss.

Suffice it to say, the Darcy's had a wonderful time in the tub and it's a birthday Lizzy will never forget.

It was now late spring and another day of celebration!  It was Michael's birthday!

[Before]

[After = he's so ripped! lol]

They had a great family celebration.  The following day, both boys went to sit for their university entrance exams.  While they waited for the results, they attended Michael's high school graduation.

It took a few days to get the results of the tests but they both passed!

The day arrived for them to head off to university.  Mom was teary and Noella was grumpy.  Mom understood that she didn't like being left behind.  The boys promised to call and text often.

They'd decided to room together at Mallan Hall which was close to the stadium.  Michael had one class for both terms but he also had a lot of football practice.  Alex had two classes each term.  Their fellow dorm mates seemed nice enough.  Luckily, there was a tennis table in the back yard.  Michael, as always, showed off his superior skills when they played.

The first day of classes started tomorrow.  The boys both wondered what the next two terms would bring.

[NOTE: Just a little teaser really.  I have a story planned but need to set it up.  Hope you enjoy.]

At first the classes seemed hard.  It was definitely different from high school.  So many notes to take.

Alex made it back from his lecture to find Michael rocking in one of the rocking chairs looking pretty sleepy.

"Wow, you looked wiped," said Alex.

"I FEEL wiped," replied Michael with a yawn.  "Practice was tough."

Alex looked into the dining room to see who all was around and said, "Well, I'm going to fix some dinner, I'm starving.  You want some?" he asked, turning back to Michael and then held in a laugh.  Michael was asleep!

After a few days, they started to get into the new rhythm of university.  Although Michael's least favourite class was his lab.  The skeleton kinda freeked him out at first but he was slowly getting used to it now.

He'd met several of his dorm mates, especially the females like Shantell Tanning.  She was pretty nice.

They also had a more mature student in the dorm.  Her name was Amy Goodman.  Michael was surprised that she joined him in the dorm gym really early one morning.  She was doing some aerobics while he used the weight machine.  They worked out in companionable silence for a while.

Michael guessed her to be around his mom's age.  They both stopped at one point to get a drink and wipe the sweat off.  He decided to break the ice.

"So what brings you to university, if you don't mind me asking," he said.

"Same as you, I suppose.  I want to get my degree," she replied.

He decided to push a little.  "So you didn't have a chance to come before?" he asked.

She smiled wryly, "Getting pregnant and married in my teens kinda set me back a bit."

"Wow, yeah, I guess it would," he smiled back.

"Yeah, well, the marriage didn't work out and now that my daughter is in her teens, she's staying with her father while I'm at school.  I want to get my nursing license.  That way I can provide better for her.  Her dad does ok but we could use more," she said.

Michael realized  how lucky he was that money was never an issue for he and his siblings.  He'd finished his workout now.  "I look forward to seeing you up here more," he said.  "It can be boring working out on your own."

"I hear you," she replied with a smile and waved as she headed downstairs to the showers.

Michael finally talked Alex into going to one of the sorority parties on campus.  They had a pretty good time and met even more girls.  Alex seemed to take a liking to this one girl named Ashley.  But Michael had a bad gut feeling about her although he couldn't pin point why.

Maybe he was just being paranoid...

They had a busy week at school.  Alex was working hard on his business plan presentation.

While Michael was having fun meeting more of the local ladies.  He hit it off pretty well with Paris, one of the sorority girls.

Alex couldn't get Ashley off his mind.  He was really attracted to her but didn't have a clue about dating.  It just wasn't something he was very interested in during high school.  So he decided to ask Michael some advice.

As he lined up his next shot, Alex said to Michael, "I need some help, bro."

"Sure, what's up?" asked Michael.

"Well, I wanna ask Ashley out but I don't want to come off as lame or anything like that.  You're more of the expert at this.  What do I do?" asked Alex

"First, try not to be so nervous about it.  She's just a girl, you're just a guy.  So maybe asked her over to the dorm and hang out.  Get to know her a bit better.  You might find out you don't really like her after you've talked more.  Or if you do, then think about a date somewhere.  Like bowling or the movies," replied Michael.

Alex nodded, "Thanks."

Later that evening, Alex called the sorority house and asked for Ashley.  She came on the phone and he asked if she'd like to come over and hang out for a while.  She paused for a few moments and then said, "Sure, I'd love to."

It was a really nice, clear night so they chatted a while, getting to know each other a bit better.

Then they got comfortable and watched the stars.

At the end of the night, Alex hugged her and said, "Maybe we could go out some time."  She smiled shyly and said, "Sure, call me," and gave him her mobile number.

Alex was on cloud nine.  She liked him!  He could just tell.

So a few days later, Alex called and asked her out for bowling.  They had a great time together.

Afterwards, he took her to the movies.  Once outside, he finally plucked up the courage to kiss her.

Before they parted for the night, she invited him to the soroity for a party the next day.

Alex talked Michael into going with him, although it didn't take much convincing.  However, when they arrived, the place was dark and no one was home.

"I don't get it, I know she said tonight," said Alex.

"Maybe you got it wrong, Alex," said Michael.

Alex shook his head and tried to phone her but only got her voicemail.  So then he sent a text but after 15 minutes and no reply, Michael convinced him they should head back to the dorm.

"You probably just got the date wrong," said Michael, although his gut was bugging him again about this girl...

The boys were approaching the end of the term and winter break.  It was the night before finals.  Alex and Michael were in their dorm room.

Michael closed his text book and looked at his watch.

"I'm going to head over and see Paris.  She invited me for dinner tonight," Michael said to Alex.  "You sure you don't want to come as well?"

Alex looked up from his computer, "No, bro.  I've got a few more hours to refine this business plan and I want it to be perfect," he said.

"Ok, just don't strain anything," Michael said with a grin and a wave.

He biked over to the sorority house and noticed Paris and Ashley chatting on the front steps.  Paris waved when she saw him and trotted over to him and gave him a kiss.  "Hey, glad you made it.  I was just about to start dinner.  Ashley and I got caught up talking," she said.

Michael smiled at her and put his arm around her shoulders, "It's no problem.  I'm happy to wait on the ladies."

Paris giggled and headed inside to start the meal, "Make yourself comfortable," she said as she made her way to the kitchen.

Ashley was watching him and said, "I have something of Alex's upstairs.  I'll just go grab it," and she went up the stairs.

Michael wandered into the living area and was about to switch on the TV when he heard Ashley call down from upstairs, "Michael, can you help me a sec?"

He followed her voice up the stairs and pushed the door open to her room and was shocked.

He found Ashley in nothing but her underwear!

"Paris will be a while and there's no sense in you being bored.  We could have some quick fun and no one has to know," she smiled slyly.

Michael was getting over his shock and was now getting angrier by the second.  "What the hell are you talking about.  I'm dating Paris and you're dating my brother!" his voice rising until he was nearly shouting.

"I know you and Paris aren't serious and frankly, your brother just doesn't do it for me," she strolled to him and ran her finger down his muscled arm.

Michael flicked her hand away from him and saw red, "I can't believe this!  You really had him snowed!  You stay away from him AND me!" he shouted.

Paris came through the door and took in the scene and that's when Michael decided it was time to leave because it looked like they were about the fight as well.

He was so angry and at the same time heart sick.  How was he going to tell Alex? ...

Michael arrived back at the dorm and headed up the stairs with a heavy heart.  He came through the door to their room and saw Alex still working on his business plan.  He must have stopped at one point and gotten ready for bed.  Alex glanced over his shoulder and then looked back at his screen.

"You're back early.  Wasn't she there?" asked Alex, a bit distractedly.

"Yeah, she was there.  Listen, I'm going to grab and shower and get ready for bed.  I need to talk to you about something when I get back," he said, heading to the door.

"Sure, bro," said Alex but he was still concentrating on the screen.

Michael headed down a flight of stairs to the showers.  He needed the time to decide what he was going to say.  He hated hurting his brother.

Fifteen minutes later, Michael came back to their room.  Alex was getting a drink out of their mini fridge.

"You want something?" he asked Michael.

Michael shook his head.

"So what's up?  Trouble with Paris?" asked Alex.

"Not exactly," replied Michael and then he continued.  "I don't know how to say this but just to tell you what happened."

Alex frowned, "What happened?"  He could tell Michael was upset about something serious.

"I arrived at the house.  Paris and Ashley were outside talking.  Paris said she was going to go start dinner and I should make myself comfortable," he began.  "Then Ashley said she had something of yours upstairs."

"Something of mind?" asked Alex.  "I've hardly been inside the sorority house.  What could she have of mine?"

"Exactly," said Michael.  "I wish I'd been thinking more clearly.  So I went in the living room and was going to switch on their TV.  But then Ashley called down the stairs and asked for my help.  I didn't think, I just went upstairs."

"Go on," said Alex, but he had a bad feeling.

"Well, I opened the door and there she was, in her underwear!" said Michael, aggitated.

"What the hell, Michael," said Alex, his voice rising.  "Why didn't you knock!"

"The door was open!  And she was coming on to me, suggesting that we have some 'quick fun' while Paris was downstairs cooking, for goodness sake!" yelled Michael.

"What is wrong with you!  Do you have to have EVERY girl?  You probably took it the wrong way because EVERY girl must want YOU!" shouted Alex.

Michael was thunderstruck.  He had no idea Alex thought that way about him and it hurt, it hurt a lot.  He didn't know what to say now.  He walked over to the dresser and grabbed his workout clothes.

"What the hell are you doing?" shouted Alex.

Michael turned at the door, "I'm going to go work out because ...." he just shook his head and walked out.

Michael was so distracted while using the weight machine.  He just was going through the motions.  Why did Alex think that way about him?  Granted, he'd always had an easy time with girls, but he wasn't some gigolo!  He respected the girls he dated and always kept things friendly.  His thoughts just kept going round and round in his head.

His phone started ringing.  He stopped, grabbed his towel to wipe his face and head and then picked it up.  Paris's name was on the screen.  Michael hit the answer button.

"Hey," he said.

"Michael, I'm SO sorry about tonight.  I don't know what her problem is but I'm sorry," said Paris.

"Paris, babe, it wasn't your fault.  Nothing for you to be sorry about," said Michael.

"How's Alex?  I feel so bad for him," said Paris.

Michael winced and replied, "Not good."

"What did he say?" she asked.

"He thinks I over reacted and read the situation wrong.  He's really mad," replied Michael.

"Seriously?  But you guys are so close.  He'll know you aren't lying about this," she replied.

"Yeah, that's what I thought too," said Michael, dejectedly.

"Oh Michael, what a mess.  He's just blinded by that piece of trash," said Paris.  "I've given her notice that she's not welcome back to the sorority house next term and I'm putting the paper work through to remove her.  I won't have that kind of behaviour among the sisters."

"Paris, what am I going to do?" asked Michael.

"Babe, just leave it with me.  I'll talk to him.  Maybe he'll open his eyes then," said Paris.

"Good luck, Paris.  I owe you one," said Michael.

"Nonsense, but thanks," she replied and he could hear the smile in her voice.

Michael ended the call and went back to the weights.

Meanwhile, Alex sat in their room staring at his computer screen hoping Ashley would log on to Skype.  He'd tried to call her but she wasn't answering and he was worried.  He’d changed into his going out clothes because he thought about trying to find her.  He saw Paris log on and was about to type to her and ask where Ashley was when she typed to him first.

Paris:  Are you there?

Alex: Yeah, I'm here.

Immediately, the Skype call was coming through from Paris.  Alex clicked answer and Paris popped up on his screen.  Alex put his headset on.

"So, how are you doing?" she asked.

"Not good.  I can't get in touch with Ashley.  Is she there?" asked Alex.

Paris decided it was time for some shock treatment.

"She's not here.  I kicked her out.  She said she was going to stay with a footballer she's been banging," replied Paris in a matter-of-fact tone.

Alex head was ringing.  He just couldn't process what she'd just said.  Paris thought he looked like someone had just hit him in the head with a frying pan.

"Alex?  You ok?" she asked.

"I...I don't understand..." he said faintly.

"Alex, she's trash.  I'm sorry.  I know you cared a lot about her.  I can tell from your reaction just now.  But she's trash and not worth your time," said Paris.

Alex didn't say anything so she went on, "And Michael did nothing wrong."

Alex's eyes darted back to the screen but he still was silent.

"My guess is she was stringing you along for a shot at the money since you're the oldest and heir to the Darcy fortune.  But she obviously underestimated her charms and Michael's morals," said Paris.  "Get your head out of your rear, Alex,” she said with a small smile.

Alex was beginning to get the clear picture and didn’t like what he saw.  He banged his head on the keyboard and said, “I’m an idiot.”

“Hey! Stop that!  You’re just a guy that a little hussy tried to take advantage of.  You aren’t the first and you sure won’t be the last.  Women like that give the rest of us honest ones a hard time,” said Paris.

Alex raised his head looking heart sick, “What am I going to say to Michael?”

“Alex, that’s easy.  He loves you.  So you say, ‘Michael, I’m sorry.  Will you forgive me?’  And that’s it.  Once you get past that part, it’s easy,” she replied.

Alex gave a very small smile, “Thanks, Paris.”

“No probs, Alex,” she replied.  “Now, go find him and straighten this mess out with you two.  She’s not worth it.”

Alex nodded, thanked her again, and disconnected the call.  He went looking for Michael, feeling about two feet tall.  He checked the gym across the hall first, but no sign of him.

He went downstairs and checked the rooms; still no sign of Michael.  Alex looked out the back windows and thought he saw someone sitting under the tree near the ping pong table.  He stepped outside and went closer to look.  It was Michael.

Alex approached slowly, feeling unsure of himself like never before.

Michael looked up but didn’t move and just watched him walk closer.

Alex stopped about 10 feet away and said, “I talked to Paris.”

Michael only nodded.

“She’s pretty cool,” said Alex, trying to get him to say something but he remained silent.  Alex went on, “She told me to get my head out of my rear so I guess that’s what I’m doing.”  He looked right in Michael’s eyes and said, “Michael, I’m sorry.  Will you forgive me?”  Alex waited anxiously.

Michael rose from sitting under the tree and approached him and then spoke for the first time, “You know I’ll forgive you, Alex.  But what hurts is thinking that you see me like that.  Do you really?”

Alex sighed and shook his head, “It’s just a bit of jealously that was talking, Michael.”

“Jealousy?” Michael asked, surprised.

“Well look at you,” said Alex, gesturing to Michael.  “I see the way women check you out and you have such an easy time with people.  Making friends and talking to strangers.  I just can’t do what you do and it can be intimidating.”

“Alex, you dope,” said Michael with a smile.  “First of all, if the women are just interested in the outter package, then I’m not really interested in them.  Heck, while I hope it doesn’t happen, I could get injured and have to pack it in.  So I want someone, eventually, who’ll be there for the long haul, not just while I’m young and fit.  I’ve seen what happens with the sports stars when they let the women ruin their lives.  That WON’T be me.”

Alex listened and nodded.  “And as for talking with people, I can help you with that.  You’re just a bit shy, that’s all,” said Michael.

“I know one thing,” said Alex.  “I’ll never trust my judgement when it comes to women again.”

Michael stepped close enough to lay his hand on Alex’s shoulder.  “Bro, don’t let her ruin it for you.  You’ve had one bad apple.  There’s lots of good ones out there who’d be glad to date you or just even be your friend,” said Michael.

Alex shrugged but smiled a little, “So, are we good now?” he asked.

Michael pulled him into a hug, “Yeah, we’re good.”
