Chapter Five -  Agnes Takes Charge

"Oh, my, this is dismal," Agnes remarked that evening, as she entered the shed.  "Not even a light bulb!"

"You can understand my urgency this morning," Jareth told her.  "I think we have moles in the back of the field as well."

"Since I'm not looking forward to sleeping standing up, you'd best sell the car now, Tia." Agnes said.

"Again, I am sorry..." Jareth began, but Agnes held up her hand to stop him.

"We are partners in this, Mr...Jareth," she said, in a determined voice.  "We both understand what needs to be done.  Sell the car, Tia, and build us a house."

"Won't be much of a house, Agnes," Tia admitted, cashing in the Speedster.  "I'm a bad builder."

"What is that tingly feeling?" Jareth asked, looking down at his hands.

"You've just got your lifetime wish," Agnes said, smiling at him.  "One requirement down already."

"Okay, you two, scootch.  Jareth, Painting class.  Agnes, off to the spa."

"Spa?" she asked.

"Go, get pampered, you're going to be working hard."  Jareth said, stepping to the curb and whistling down a cab.  He escorted her into it, and watched her speed off.  Then he flagged another one down and hopped in.

"Thank goodness," Tia said, "I hate it when they...get...underfoot...hello?  What's this?"

She watched in helpless laughter as the burglar slipped in and pocketed the sleeping bag.  Stealthily, they looked around and began the escape.

"Wait!" Tia called.  "Come back and take the shed!  Save me having to tear it down!"

By dawn, when Agnes and Jareth returned, there was a house, greenhouse, and the beginnings of a basement museum.

"Welcome home, Agnes!" Tia said.  "Sorry it's not that great."

"It's fine," Agnes smiled.  "I think we'll be quite comfortable."

"It's not fine!" Jareth's voice came ringing down the hall.  "Where's the goblin pit?  The throne room?"

"House, not castle, GK," Tia snapped back.  "We don't even have goblins!"

"The greenhouse looks wonderful," Agnes said, continuing down the hall.

"Did you remember the oubliette?"  Jareth yelled.

"Who, exactly, were you planning to stuff into it?" Tia hollered back.

"I don't know about this kitchen, though, Tia.  The layout looks a little awkward."  Agnes said calmly, inspecting the appliances.

"Any suggestions would be most welcome, Agnes," Tia told her.

"I suggest there should be a bog in the yard!"  Jareth stormed.

"Jareth!" Agnes snapped, "into the art room, immediately!"  Surprised, he followed her in.

"Stand still for a moment, and try to smile," she commanded, pulling out the brushes and paints.  He did, and she began the painting.  "Now, this is a perfectly serviceable house."  The steel in her voice matched the blaze in her eyes.  "You can stop complaining about what you don't have and start appreciating what you do."  Her fingers flew as she captured his image on the canvas.  "Go and start meeting people while I finish this."  He looked at her with a startled kind of half smile, and then left silently.

"Whoa, Agnes!  You bite!"  Tia said in admiration.

"I'm playing for high stakes here, Tia.  I don't have time for his tantrums.  I'm surprised you put up with them at all."

"I like the argument," Tia admitted.  "You do good work, Agnes, that looks just like His Nibs."

Agnes finished the painting and wiped her hands absently on the rag.  "Isn't it about time for the makeover?" she asked.

"You want one?" Tia asked, astonished.  "I would have thought you'd had enough of them."

Agnes gave her a lopsided grin.  "I'm thinking of it as working clothes.  This," she gestured to her black dress, "belongs to my life, not my 'business deal'."

"If you say so," Tia said.  "You don't want to look twelve, do you?  I don't do all that corset stuff."

"Let's just start with a rinse and hairstyle, and see where we go from there."

"Okay, now for some comfortable working clothes..." Agnes said, opening the dresser.

"You've got to have something classy, Agnes.  Dinner parties, going out, that kind of stuff."

"Am I going to be going to a lot of dinner parties?" Agnes said, grinning.

"No, but you should have something classy."

"There.  Now, I'm off to gardening class," she said, changing back to every day wear.  "Tell Jareth to get his own dinner."

Jareth was home when she returned, and they spent some time in the warm summer twilight watching the stars come out.

"What's she like?"  Agnes asked.

"She knows nothing about architecture, I can tell you that..." he began.   Agnes giggled.

"Not Tia.  Your Sarah.  What's she like?"

Jareth's face softened in the shadows.  "She's stubborn, rash, given to speaking without thinking.  She's intelligent, creative, cares deeply for the people around her.  She never gives up, never turns back.  She fascinates me and torments me all at the same time."

"Sounds like quite a woman."  Agnes said.  "Do you think this will work to convince her you can finish what you start, using hard work instead of illusion?"

"I hope so," he sighed into the darkness.  "I really hope so."

I know!  He's being so sweet to Agnes!

Chapter Six - What's Said is Said

"Anges, my dear!" Jareth called, returning from the consignment store.  "Where are you?"

"In here," she called, "just resting for a moment."

The Goblin King swept into the room.  It amused Agnes that he always moved as if he were wearing an invisible cape, she could almost feel the swish of it behind him.  He knelt before her and took her hand.

"A present," he announced, waving his gloved hand over hers.  She looked down at her hand and then stood up in surprise.

"Jareth!  It's beautiful!"

"Just a token of my esteem, my dear Agnes.  A trifle to celebrate the birth of my heir."

Agnes looked down at him, his dancing eyes, the almost feral smile on his face.  "It's not been confirmed yet," she warned him.

He stood up and hugged her.  "It will be.  I have every confidence in you."

His enthusiasm was contagious and Agnes giggled as he swept her up into an impromptu waltz.

He was still humming the tune later as he painted.  He was cranking out art at an alarming rate.

"Good mood, Jareth?"  Tia asked.

"Things are progressing well.  I'm going to have everything completed before the deadline."

"Yes, Agnes is well on her way to ambrosia."

"Too bad she can't do her own dynasty." Jareth mused.  "She'd be excellent at it."

"She's excellent in this one." Tia told him.

"In fact, I don't understand what you and the elf were going on about.  Granted, the first days were a little disconcerting, but now, it's a piece of cake."

"JARETH!" Tia yelled.  He paled and dropped his paintbrush.  "I can't believe you said that."

"Neither can I," he said, eyes wide.  "You don't have to, I mean, really..."

"Said is said." Tia told him.  "I hope your memory is good.  I can't give you the next piece of information you need, and neither can Agnes."

Jareth began to mutter elegant curses in Goblin as he pulled out his cell phone.

***

Early the next morning, Agnes came into the studio, showing off her maternity clothes.

"It's official," she told him, beaming.  "But I can't remember what I'm supposed to eat for a boy.  Tia tells me you have to decide, you've incurred some kind of penalty."

"One of my own design, I'm afraid," he said, pulling out his phone.  "I'll just have to double check, my dear.  You run down to the spa and get yourself a manicure and massage, and I'll call you as soon as I know."

As soon as she was gone Jareth began dialing frantically.  It picked up on the third ring.

"Hello?"

"Jamie!  Where's Erik?  Did he find the elf?"

Commodore James Norrington lazily stirred his tea and looked out the apartment window.  "Nice to hear from you too, Jareth," he said.  "What was that garbled message on the machine last night about?  Something about a piece of apple cake?"

"I need information!" Jareth sputtered at him.  "Stop smiling, Jamie, I can hear you grinning at me."

"Legolas is in hiding since Sweeney's having one of his days, poor chap.  Erik is on a retreat with his group, he left early this morning.  Can't you get him on the cell?"

"I don't think he's in range.  Is there a note or anything?"  Jareth sounded desperate.

"Hold on," Jamie told him, rummaging though the papers on the counter.  "I've got a take-away curry number, says they won't deliver here anymore, part of a schematic, something that looks like a paper towel with writing on it..." he held up the crumpled towel.  "If Erik wrote this he was in a hurry and spilled his coffee on it as well."

"What does it say?"

Jamie squinted.  "Tell...GK, I guess that's you," he laughed, "um, it looks like Wet...Marlin?  Some kind of fish?  It's signed with a squiggle that could be OG."

"Opera Ghost?  Okay, Jamie, that's what I need!"

"Always good talking to you, Jareth," Jamie smiled as he hung up the phone.  He tried very hard not to hear the laughter coming from the hall.

Jareth dialed again.  "Agnes? Where are you?"

"Just picking up the mail," she said, using the bluetooth.  "Do you know?"

"Start eating the mellons, my dear."

Agnes dutifully ate mellons constantly.  She didn't like them much, but it was part of her bargain.  She worked in the garden, improved her cooking and listened to fishing tabcasts.  When she took a break to relax, at Tia's insistence, she asked Jareth about Erik.

"He's a composer?"

"Yes, and a brilliant one at that."

"He's also your best friend?"

Jareth thought for a moment.  "I would have to call it a draw between him and Jamie.  Erik is moody and temperamental at times, I think it's a mark of the great artist.  Jamie has apparently decided to spend his life saving others."  He looked at Agnes.  "Perhaps you will be able to know both of them."

Agnes laughed.  "I would like that, but I'm not sure I want to be one of those sims who lives to be 118."

"Age is only a number," Jareth told her.  "I, for example, am older than you would ever credit, but I'm still as handsome and youthful as I ever was."

The next day they were discussing going out for lunch when the contractions started.

"Agnes! AGNES!" Jareth yelled.  "What's happening?"

"The baby is coming," Agnes told him.  "How did you think it was going to get here?"

"Usually the goblins bring one, and I go to see if the wisher wants it back or not.  This looks terribly painful."

"Hospital, Jareth," Tia broke in.  "Drive Agnes to the hospital."

"Driving Agnes to the hospital in the tacky motive mobile."  Jareth chanted.  "Driving Agnes...

"Actually," Tia broke in, "Agnes is driving herself to the hospital while you have hysterics in the motive mobile.  And what do you mean, tacky?"

"It needs a paint job.  Something tactful, like a van mural or flames." Jareth said.

"One of those chain mail bikini women with the huskies?  Not happening, GK, your taste in vans is so 1986".

"If you two don't knock it off, I'm kicking you out and having this baby right here!" Agnes shouted.  There was instant silence.

***

Agnes left the hospital first, carrying their beautiful baby daughter.  "Tia?" she asked.  "This doesn't break my side of the bargain, does it?"

"Not at all, love," Tia told her.  "He decided the fruit.  You provided the heir."

"She's adorable, isn't she?  I swear she winked at me as soon as they put her in my arms."

Jareth stormed out of the hospital, having had to sign papers, pay for the birth, fill out forms and fight off the advances of two doctors, the head nurse, and three orderlies.

"She's a gorgeous baby, Jareth.  Don't worry, Erik will be next, that's all."

"You don't understand," he spat, kicking at the curb while he flagged down a taxi.  "That's no baby.  They've sent me Gytha Ogg!"

I have never heard of this comic before, I am not especially familiar with the characters, but this story is just so beautifully done! The characters have a spark of life to them I just do not see often enough, and it's not only entertaining to read, but compelling to read! What's going to happen next, what's going to happen next? I'm so eager to see the next part!

He's a schemer, that Jareth!  I'm very happy you like it, Anna!

Thanks so much, Scalec!  I'm so pleased you can connect with the characters, it means I'm doing my job.  ;)  Wait no longer, the next part is here.

Chapter Seven - You Remind Me Of The Babe

"I don't understand you, Jareth!  Gytha is perfect.  I've never seen a baby smile and giggle so much."  Agnes started up the swing again.  "Just look at her, she's smiling right now!"

"She's smiling because she's going to play merry heck with my dynasty!" Jareth scowled, striding across the nursery floor.  "That infant is going to grow up to become the most hedonistic baggage you've ever seen!  How could this happen?"

"You're being overly dramatic again, Jareth," Agnes told him.  "She's such a loveable little thing.  It's not her fault you got the fruit wrong."

"I've my suspicions about that, as well."  He stopped, mid step, to peer into the baby's face.  Gytha winked at him.  "There!  Did you see that?"

"Calm down, Jareth," Agnes scolded.  "Gytha is here now, and you've got to make the best of it.  You told me you liked children!"

"I do, I do!" he said, trying to reassure her.  "But Gytha is not a normal child.  She's going to grow up to be Nanny Ogg!"

"Not for a few weeks at least, so stop this nonsense!  Why don't you take a few pictures of her for the museum?  I've got to check on the garden."  Agnes swept out and left the Goblin King and the baby witch to stare at each other.

"You and I are going to have a very long talk about this in a few days," he said, snapping photos.

Gytha laughed at him and went to sleep.

Jareth left Agnes to care for the baby during his daily trips to the consignment store to sell his paintings.  He found himself staying out longer and longer, introducing himself to the people who seemed to flock to the business.  News like Jareth gets around, and gossip was flying about the tall stranger with the outlandish hair and distinct eyes, who claimed to be Goblin Royalty.  Jareth found himself basking in the attention.

"It's like you're running for office," Tia said.  "I keep waiting for you to kiss the babies."

"It's a nice change," Jareth said, musingly.  "Most people hide their children from me.  Now everyone wants to be my friend."

"You've your own child at home.  Why don't you go back and kiss her?"  Tia asked.

The Goblin King shuddered.  "I still can't believe you did that to me," he hissed.

"Don't blame me," Tia said, holding up her hands.  "Legolas tried to warn you, these dynasties take on a life of their own."

Agnes, for her part, didn't mind the extra work that came with a baby in the house.

Gytha was extremely easy to care for, always in a good mood, always ready to be cuddled or rocked.  The three days of her infant-hood zipped by in the blink of an eye.

"Jareth!  It's time for the cake!" Agnes called.  "You get over here and stop being so ridiculous about this."

"Agnes, my dear, she's going to start talking after this.  Must we hurry it along?"

"Now, Jareth," Agnes said, in the quiet tone she reserved for the Goblin King in a snit.  "No wonder she teases you, if this is the reaction she gets."

"Oh, huzzah, today begins seven generations of having Gytha to converse with!  How ever shall I contain my joy?"

Agnes shook her head and blew out the candles.  Then she gently laid the baby on the floor.  "I can't wait for this," she whispered.

Giggling as the sparkles hit, Gytha transformed into a cute little girl with a head full of red hair.

"Go ahead, Jareth.  Go do her portraits, then you are teaching her to talk."  Agnes said.

"Gytha, she's scaring me," Jareth told the toddler.  "She sounds just like Sarah with that voice."

He took the child into the studio and dutifully began her portrait.  Gytha sat still until he had the image he wanted, then crawled off in search of Agnes and a snack.  Jareth carefully laid down the paint on the canvas, he eyes narrowing as he did so.  A frown formed on his thin lips and he scowled at it.  Finally he threw down the brush in disgust.

"It's just not right," he muttered.  "Something goes against the grain here."  He stood back and stared at the easel for a while.  Then he nodded and scrapped the picture.

"Wait, you could have sold it if you didn't like it!" Tia yelled.

"This is more important," he snapped.  "Agnes?  Where is the child?"

"I just put Gytha down for a nap," Agnes said.  "Have you finished already?"  She followed him into the nursery.  "What's going on?"

He lifted the little girl out of the crib and with long strides took her into the bedroom he shared with Agnes.  "Hold her for a moment, please," he told Agnes, giving her the child.  Agnes and Gytha looked at each other in puzzlement as he pulled the dresser drawers open and began searching for something.  He snorted as he found what he was looking for, and with a wave of his hand made a small change.  He took Gytha and after bouncing her on the bed for a second, quickly changed her outfit.

"I saw that, Jareth," Agnes said with a smile.  "You tickled her tummy!"

"Nonsense," Jareth said, with a lopsided grin.  "You must be imagining things.  There, now," he said to the baby, "that's much better, isn't it?"  He sat her in front of the mirror.

"Seriously?" Tia asked.

Later that night, after Gytha's nap and portrait were done and Agnes had given Gytha her supper in the high chair, Jareth sat down to teach her how to talk.

"We're not going to fight for the next six generations, are we?" he asked her.

"Course we are, you silly man!" she told him.  "That's what family's about!  But not too often or too hard, as it'll upset Our Agnes.  She's a kind soul, she is.  You could've done lots worse than her."

"I know it."  He paused, then asked her what had been in his mind since he'd first seen her, nestled in Agnes' arms.  "You're not here to sabotage me, are you?"

"Me?" she laughed.  "Nah, I'm here to keep an eye on you and to have a bit of a kick up.  Been a long time since I was young."

Jareth felt the tension leave him in a rush.  Before he could stop himself, he'd stood up and tossed Gytha into the air, while the radio clicked itself on.

"You remind me of the babe!" he told her.

"What babe?" she giggled.

"The babe with the power.."

"What power..."

"The power of voodoo.."

"Who do?"

"You do!"

"Do what?"

"Remind me of the babe..."

Agnes came to the doorway and watched them for a moment, wiping her hands on a dishtowel.  "Jareth?" she interrupted as the inevitable happened, "you shouldn't really 'Dance, Magic Dance' with her right after she's eaten."

I'm laughing so hard that I'm crying Tia XD.  The Labyrinth has always been one of my favorite movies and that song is one of my favorite parts.  Plus, the way Agnes just says that last line with what I imagine to be a heroically straight face is keeping me in a giggle fit.  Bravo!

I feel like I missed some sort of great joke with the outfit, but you know what? I'm good. I am so good I am a Sim with a Good Trait. Who donated money. Simoleons. A thousand of them. Little moodlet and everything. What what.
Please excuse me, I am super tired and I'm enjoying this mental state.
Simply darling baby, really, though I have so much confusion over the red hair. It's just...so...red...where did it come from? Or did you dye it, perhaps?
Agnes, I like you very much today. Roll on, lady, roll on. With strength and crumpets, if you so desire.

Gytha's hair really did come out that red, I have no idea why.  It made me laugh when I saw it, though.  About the baby's outfit, in the movie Jareth is from, a teenage girl (Sarah) wishes her baby brother away to the Goblins.  The little brother is wearing a red and white striped sleeper, like that one.

Agnes is a great sim to play, I really love her.   ;D

Gosh, I really should have known that! I've never seen the movie, but I've seen the merchandise for it.

By the by, is there a place where I could find the David Bowie hair? I really want it now.

Ah, Labyrinth. I remembered watching that movie in my teen years. It was one of the creepiest movies I had ever seen, and the fact that a rock star played the main villian in it was pretty interesting. David Bowie did make a very creepy goblin king.

Anyways, I wish you and Jareth luck. I have never heard of this "Roommates" thing but it sounds intriguing.
I play The Sims 4 for fun, so I don't care if I never end up being interviewed for the Dynasty Hall of Fame; people who play for keeps burn out too easily and don't enjoy playing the games, so I am going to not sweat the details.

Thanks!  Roommates is a lot of fun!

Chapter Eight - Daddy, Daddy!

Despite his initial misgivings, Jareth found having Gytha around quite a bit of fun.  She was a happy, observant child, and he found in her a wide strip of mischievousness that matched his own.

"Since you needs my help, it would be best if I was allowed to do just what it is I want to, Kingy, my lad," she told him.

"Agnes!" Jareth called.  "She's trying to blackmail me again."

"Blackmail's a harsh word," Agnes called back from the kitchen.  "Think of it as creative bargaining instead."

"It's blackmail," he hissed to Gytha, who giggled.  "You're still a toddler, what on earth are you going to be like as an adult?"

"Fun," Gytha shrugged.  "Now do the claw again, I like that."

Agnes had adjusted to her odd child as well as could be expected.  It had been a little unnerving at first to have the baby crawl up into her lap while she watched Simprah and Dr Sim, and then begin giving her opinions on the various guests.

"That one in the pink," she'd told her mother, "she's just like Our Doreen back home.  Always has to be the center of attention.  And that baldy there, he don't know what he's about, any more than the rest of them."

To Agnes' horrified fascination, the child was right about the people on the show.  When it was over, she'd clicked the tv off and asked Agnes to play with her.  Now her birthday was upon them.  After the sparkles, Gytha ran for the dresser, not coming out until she'd found a style she liked.

"You look lovely, dear," Agnes told her.  Gytha gave her a quick hug and followed Jareth to the studio where she posed for her photo and portrait.  Jareth had mastered painting and was desperately cranking out ice sculptures.

Agnes took a short break from her garden and Tia found her rocking steadily in the nursery.

"What is it, Agnes?"

"Don't get me wrong, I love Gytha, she's a wonderful person, under all that bluntness.  But tomorrow she's going to school!"

"Lookin' forward to it, actually," Gytha said, coming in and getting into her pyjamas.  She gave Agnes a quick peck on the cheek and crawled into her bed.  "Lots of new friends to make, things to try out."

"Agnes tells me the school called today."  Jareth said.

"Prolly to tell you what a good scholar I am." Gytha replied.

"It was more along the lines of what a good teacher you are." Jareth told her.  "Something regarding all the children singing about wizard's staffs."

"Oh, that!" she giggled.  "I didn't have time to teach them the one about the hedgehog."

Jareth shrugged.  "I don't know what the school has against singing, but it's upset Agnes terribly.  Perhaps you should go and apologize to her."

"Right then," she told him.  "You get back to those sculptures."  Gytha made her way quietly to the living room where Agnes sat, rocking, in that determined way she was developing.

"Cooee, Agnes?" Gytha called softly.  "Jareth told me you was upset with me."

Agnes held out her arms to the girl and despite her size and sturdiness, Gytha crawled right up into her lap.  "Not with you, so much, dear, as with this whole situation!  Gytha, you have to try to remember that right now you're a child!  Here at home it doesn't matter," she patted the girl's head gently, "but you must try to fit in at school."

"I do fit in, Agnes.  Wherever I go.  I can't help it."

"Then I want you to promise me not to teach any of your friends any more folk songs.  At least until high school."

Gytha nodded.  "Alright, I can promise you that.  Now, I can see this has given you quite a turn.  Why don't you go have a bit of a lie down.  I can get supper for me and Our Jareth."

Agnes stood up, Gytha scrambling out of the chair with her.  She gave Agnes a hard hug.

"Don't you worry, Agnes.  I'm here to help you all I can."  Agnes went to her room.

"I'll be glad when I can use the real stove." Gytha muttered.  "All I can make is muffins."

"That's probably a good thing," Tia told her.  "You're still only nine years old."

She finished the muffins, set the plate on the kitchen table and went to get the Goblin King.

Two days later, the family sat down for dinner together.

"The school called again." Agnes said.

"If it's about the apples, I can explain," Gytha mumbled around her dinner.

"I'm beginning to think the teacher has something against our girl," Jareth said, frowning.  "I may have to go down there and set her straight."

"Actually, Gytha's made the honor roll." Agnes grinned.  Jareth and Gytha swung their heads around to stare at her.  Then Jareth turned to his daughter.

"Well done!" he told her.  "I shall have to think of a suitable reward for you."

"I already did," Agnes said.  "Go on, Gytha, it's in your room."  Gytha left the table, her booted feet stomping as she ran to the nursery.

"Whoopee!" she cried, and there was a crash.

"What have you done, my dear?" Jareth asked.

Agnes stood up and started to clear the dishes.  "Well, you remember how upset she was that she had no magic when she was a toddler?  I picked up a little something at the alchemy shop for her."

"I'm a proper witch again, I am," Gytha yelled.  "Lookit what I can do, Jareth, Agnes!"  She came running back into the kitchen, waving her wand.

Jareth stared at her in horror, then swung around to stare at Agnes.  "I thought we agreed to wait until she was a teenager."

Agnes smiled.  "It meant so much to her, Jareth."

"Gonna get a proper broomstick and all now," Gytha was dancing around the table now.

"Bath, then bed, young lady," Agnes said, in the tone of mothers everywhere.  "Tomorrow Jareth will get you a nice broomstick."

"I will?" Jareth asked, stunned.

"You will."

Gytha came to Jareth for her bedtime story that night.  He pulled out her favorite cookbook and began reading the recipes to her.

"And then, fold in three eggs and beat gently," he said soothingly.

"Y'know, Jareth, my lad, you're getting very good at this family thing."  Gytha told him.

"Was there ever any doubt?" he asked her.

She yawned.  "You'd have less troubles with Sarah if you showed this side more often."

"Gytha, I've told you before, we are not having this conversation."  He returned to his reading, and her eyes closed.

"Jareth!" Tia whispered.  "You just kissed Gytha goodnight!  I can't believe it!"

"I can't believe it either!  And I think I liked it!"
