Placing Ports
« on: June 30, 2013, 01:56:03 PM »
How do you place ports? Is it through edit town, or build/buy mode? I am asking because I discovered an island and would like to place a port there so I can dock my houseboat when I want to. Thanks!

It took me a while to figure this out.

You'll have to build one.

Plop down a lot, then make it commercial and categorize is as a Port.

Make a dock. To get the dock at the right level, start in the ocean and move the dock foundation towards the land. You'll also have to have a foundation leading to the dock with stairs, otherwise the Sim can't get off the dock, even though it might look level with the land.

Then at the end of the dock you need a Gangplank, an item available in the Commercial section of build.

That's the basics. You can fancy it up a bit with lights, benches, trees, etc. But the dock, foundation with stairs, and gangplank are all you need to make it work.

SimGuruGraham has a step by step instructional guide available on the official forums that has been linked to by me in another thread.   It's great info and with lots of instructions on how to get the ports.  Or remember you can always copy and place one of the ports already in town, too.

Here is the link to the guide by SimGuruGraham.

Ok, but what if I wanted the rest of the lot to be my sims land home. Will it still be only for my sims or will others be able to dock there, and live there. Thank you guys very much for them help!

I don't think you can put a dock that houseboats can sit at on a personal port.  Everywhere I've seen is Ports have to be commercial lots.

I placed a 50 x 25 lot next to my home lot, classed it as a commercial port lot.  Then I copied one of the 50 x 25 port lots to the library and plopped it down in the new lot I made so the houseboat is docked right next door to my home property.

Awesome tutorial...thank you.  Before seeing your link, I got as far as placing a lot, defining it as Community Port and went nuts looking in build for a port.  I was trying to do this in another town so could not copy and paste from an existing port.  Thanks again.

I've followed the tutorial but cannot get the gangway to work at all so I cannot have a port. Am I missing something?

I've done it on 64x64 lot over the water by no trouble atoll. There is plenty of depth for the houseboat etc. I just can't figure out why it won't work...

Never mind, was going from land to ocean instead of the other way round. Duh...
