I love the name Galatea, it sounds so heroic :D; I think I probably read it in a book. Poor Kleio, we'll all miss Passie.

It's a great name :D
Yeah, RIP Passie... and she was so useful, too. Maxed out handiness... they have to call repair people now! Okay, but that's not why we'll miss her of course...

Aw, RIP Passie. We'll miss you.

You've got two good looking boys though. Tough choice for heir!

It is tough! I have more or less decided on one, but I sometimes waver because then the other one will look absolutely gorgeous... I stand by my choice for now, though, because I have his entire story planned out and it's much more interesting :P

*sniffle* Yeah, it IS hard to lose the first heir, it really is.  RIP Passie.  And I LOVE the direction you're taking the story in ^^  I truly do.  I love IF's, so this makes me ridiculous happy ^^

I'm just going to pretend Galatea is an Abarat reference, if you don't mind. And RIP Passie. I'm already terrified to lose Kath Mond and she's only a teen. First heirs are wonderful.

Yes... it is that much sadder because she was among the first babies too...
Oooh, I hope I don't disappoint then xD Eek!

You mean the books by Clive Barker? :P I read the first one so I'm okay with you pretending that (even if I don't recall any characters called Galatea xD)
Yeah, It's just generally so sad losing heirs - I'm going to miss Kleio so much! She's an adult in my game...

Aww, Passie. In the middle of all the crazy, you take your leave. Not very unlike you, I don't think. Beautiful writing, Louise. I'm always happy to come and read more.

Yep. They're my second favorite book series. And she only shows up in the second book. She doesn't have a lot of teeth, but still. Good book. And, no, Kleio will be immortal. SO I DECREE!

Ah, so that's why I don't know of her xD Explains a lot!
A lot like her dad then. Okay, Junior wasn't immortal, but he stayed alive for sooo long.

3.7. The Imaginary Friend
(Orestes)

I was the serious kid, the neurotic one, the one who would freak out and check the sink one extra time - when Orpheus and Galtea just wanted to go play. In retrospect, it’s not like they actually hated that, but try telling that to a kid. I mostly stayed inside back then, reading, playing to myself, anything I could do alone.

I probably should have stayed that way.

But when you thought that your brother and his imaginary friend turned real girl hated you, you were eager to redeem yourself in their eyes when they suddenly offered it. I’d been staring at them in the snow for a while and that’s when Galatea waved me out and asked me to come with them to the winter festival.

“I’ve never been,” she said, but then she’d never hardly ever tried anything. “But Orpheus says it’s amazing. We can get snow hot cocoa, and we can build a snowman.”

Something about her always made me happy – maybe it was they joy of someone seeing the world with new eyes, someone who got excited about everything that drew me in. I hardly thought about that as a kid. I just decided that I liked her and when she asked it was okay. Orpheus I could say no to but never Galatea.

Even then, it didn’t surprise me when we got to the festival and they basically forgot all about me. Galatea’s eyes lit up as Orpheus suggested they build a snowman and without another word, they ran over and did it while I was left behind.

I stood around for a while but when that started looking weird and people around me noticed, I skated, just for a while.

I gave it up fairly quickly. I’m clumsy, always have been, and after four falls, I took off the skates to sit on the ground, ignoring how cold I was getting in the snow. While I considered hopping on my bike to go home, a voice interrupted my line of thinking.

It was a woman, one I’d never seen in my life before, and she sat down next to me.

“All by your lonesome, huh? Bummer.”

I shrugged. “I don’t care.”

“Aaaw, now that’s not true. I can see that. It’s those two, right? Your brother and his friend. It’s typical, you know – forgetting his friends and family as soon as he gets a lady friend.”

“I’m going home.” I got up to leave but she sprang to her feet as well.

“Wait, wait, little boy. I have something for you.”

She held a white package with a red bow towards me and smiled.

“I’m not supposed to take things from strangers.”

“Well, I’m Minerva and now I’m not a stranger anymore.”

There was something about her name. I thought I’d heard whispers from my parents – I thought they’d said to stay away from her, to be careful…

“Who are you?”

“I told you, Minerva. We’re family, actually – but your daddy doesn’t like me anymore. I’m… you could say I’m the black sheep of the family. I’ve always been so alone and I just hope… that you’ll be my friend. That I could have someone, for once…”

I took the gift from her.

Safe back home, I opened it to find an elixir inside. It was glowing slightly and the label on the bottle said: ‘For lonely days’. I never told my mother about that elixir, not even years later – she would have killed me. It could have been dangerous, it could have been disastrous.

Lucky for me, it filled me with a sense of bliss. The loneliness vanished.

On Snowflake Day, Minerva came back. I found her building a snowman outside my parents’ house.

“Hello little guy,” she said. “Did you like the present?”

I nodded eagerly. “It was amazing, what was it?”

“Oh, just a little concoction I mixed up myself. I’m a witch, you know.”

“You’re an alchemist, too? My mum’s an alchemist, the best in the world, that’s what my dad says.”

“Yeah, I’m both – witch and alchemist. That’s kind of amazing, right? Hey, give me a hand here, it’s hard work building this fellow.”

I laughed and helped her roll the next ball for the snowman.

(Kleio)

We were all gathered on Snowflake Day, Penelope, Hebe, and Paris as well as the rest of us, but I soon noticed that someone was missing.

Donte noticed, too: “Where’s Orestes?”

It was right, while Hebe and Paris were sitting in the arm chairs, Orestes was nowhere to be seen. I got up. “I’ll find him.”

He was outside, waving at someone.

“Who are you waving at?” I asked, and he turned.

“Just a friend.”

And he walked past me, into the house, not looking like he was going to elaborate. A friend? I didn’t want to be cruel so I didn’t mention how he’d never spoken of any friend. How he’d hardly ever had anyone but Orpheus and Galatea. It had always bothered us. He was so isolated, a little shy. Now I was wondering if maybe it was my other son who had an imaginary friend.

However worried I was, he behaved like a normal kid when time came to open the presents. And everybody seemed pretty happy. It was nice to see Paris again, a teenager now, and for a moment it felt almost surreal that he was already so big, and same about my own sons. Sometimes I still forgot that they weren’t toddlers.

And it’s not like they stopped growing.

[Author’s note: Finally. You have no idea how difficult this one was to write. In the end I just had to finish it, whether I’m satisfied or not (I’m not, of course... but when am I ever?)]

I hope Minerva doesn't do anything to Orestes. At the moment he's my favorite twin, so I'm definitely rooting for things to work out for him.

Who knows what that Minerva is up to? Well, I do, but I'm not saying...
I'm glad you like Orestes, though!

That wasn't a personality change potion, was it? A simboo of mine got fed one of those from someone sneaky in my story, haha. So, if it is, I wonder what changed in Orestes! How do you keep these names straight, btw? Orpheus and Orestes are so similar!

It was just a vial of bliss :P I have way too many story ideas with his current traits to change them. (And Kleio's been making a huge amount of vials of bliss because of her LTW).
They are, yeah. I think it's because the characters (both mine and the mythological ones) are so distinct in my mind... Definitely won't give the next batch of kids so similar names, though.

3.8. The Ballad of Two Brothers
(Kleio)

It was getting obvious to everyone what Orpheus felt about his not-so-imaginary friend, and she didn’t seem to mind much. She was a social butterfly, always happy for the attention she got. She wasn’t unpleasant or demanding attention, but she sure didn’t mind the attention either.

It wouldn’t have bothered me so much with their obvious feelings, if it wasn’t like it bothered Orestes so much.

He and Orpheus were never very close – a fact that reminded me a lot of my own relationship with my twin – but now they hardly spoke and when they did, I sensed an edge to their words. It didn’t take a genius to put two and two together and figure out what the problem was.

And not just the two boys were on edge. Orestes and Galatea were having their issues as well, as I found out.

“… and you’re being horrible!” Galatea was so angry, I could see her visibly shaking, while Orestes kept his head down and was playing the piano as usual.

“I fail to see how I’m horrible.”

“You’re just mad because I’m going with Orpheus to the prom.”

“Please, I hardly care about-“

“Any problems here?” I asked, and Galatea froze. She gave me a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.

“No, of course not. I’d better do my homework.”

She walked out of there so fast, I didn’t get a chance to talk to her. I spun to try and talk to Orestes but he was off, too, mumbling something about also having homework to do.

(Orestes)

I woke in the middle of the night to a strange glow that came from under my bed. Under there was a bottle, much like the one Minerva had given me, and even before I read the label, I knew that it was another elixir from her.

Galatea and Orpheus were both sleeping soundly in the other end of the room, and I soundlessly slipped out of bed to look at the bottle. The label said: “A little icebreaker. Throw at desired target. Don’t forget to sweep up the glass, there’s a good boy.”

I smiled to myself.

I wouldn’t have thrown the elixir at Galatea if I hadn’t recognised it – I wasn’t that foolhardy, even in my arrogant teens – but it was one I knew my mum had made at one point. She’d called it an “icebreaker” herself.

So I did exactly as Minerva’s label suggested. I threw it at her. At first she looked shocked, but when nothing happened, other than, I assumed, a feeling of serenity and pleasantness, she smiled at me.

“Orie, that wasn’t necessary,” she said. “It’s one of those friendship elixirs, right?”

I nodded shyly, but I couldn’t help but note that her smile was friendlier. At least more so than it had been for a while.

“We already were friends, you know.”

She kissed my cheek and danced off, leaving me to blush deeply.

Even if Galatea didn’t feel like the elixir was necessary, I felt the difference. These days, I’m not sure if that was actually because of the elixir, or if it was because she was touched that I would care enough to “cheat” like that. Back then I was convinced of the former, and whatever the reason, Galatea and I became closer friends.

Orpheus noticed, too. “You’re awfully chummy, you two,” he said, as we all sat doing our homework.

None of us commented on that. I was happy enough to be a friend of Galatea that I didn’t care to argue with my brother.

I even felt okay when we all went off to prom and I was on my own. I had a splendid evening, met some more people than I had most of my life and at the end of the evening I headed home, feeling like I was walking on clouds. I hardly noticed Minerva, sitting in our living room, when I entered, but then she spoke: “Here comes the prom king.”

“Minerva, hey. I’m not… really prom king.”

“Nah, I know.” She sighed deeply and she seemed depressed. “You got a moment?”

“How did you get in here?”

“Oh, does it really matter? Look I really need to talk to you, kid.”

She stood up and I noticed that she looked terrible, worn out, and she was visibly dragging a foot. Only a very brief glint of pain showed in her eyes, and then she was all Minerva again.

“Where have you been?” I asked. She had been absent for long, now that I thought of it. She had appeared more when I was a kid but after our birthdays, she’d been strangely absent.

“I’ve been out of the country, in Egypt actually. But that doesn’t matter. What matters is I need a favour from you.”

“What kind of favour?”

“Your dad, I’m going to bring over another elixir and I want you to throw it at him, understood?”

“What kind of elixir?”

“Questions, questions, questions!” It burst out of her and I backed away involuntarily. “Right, right, sorry. Look, I can’t tell you right now. Just meet me down at the lake next Monday and I’ll give it to you.”

“I’ll… think about it.”

She sighed. “Your loyalty is stunning. Really, I’m deeply touched. Say, how are things with the little lady? That doll lady?”

For some reason it was another lady that sprung to mind. Ester Luck. She was a friend of Galatea’s and very… forward. She was nice. I wasn’t sure if I was actually in love with her, but she was nice. Minerva looked at me.

“So?”

“Galatea is my brother’s girlfriend.”

“Ah, I see, you’re letting petty things get in the way.”

“It’s not like that. I met another girl. She’s really nice. I mean, I guess…”

Minerva snorted. “Oh, bless. That’s cute. I guess I should have known you wouldn’t have the guts to go for what you really want.”

For the first time since I met her, there was something disturbing about her; she rolled her eyes at me and I couldn’t help but ask: “What’s up with you today?”

“Please, just meet me on Monday.”

She left me to ponder her somewhat harsh words. There was Esther. She was nice.

And then, did it matter that I couldn’t honestly say to myself that I liked her better than Galatea?
