Problems on Houseboats
« on: June 26, 2013, 01:06:14 AM »
I backed up my old Sims games, removed all my mods, installed Island Paradise, and began playing a completely new character. I moved her into the houseboat "You're On a Boat" at the Port Popular. I prefer to move into pre-built houses unfurnished, because I do have certain, ahem, unique preferences in my furnishings. ;-)

Anyway, when I moved in, all the furniture was gone except for the stove, fridge, shower, toilet and kitchen and bathroom sinks. That's totally normal for an "unfurnished" pre-built house. But then I noticed - the outside trash-can was gone too! I thought the mailbox and the outdoor trashcans were completely non-negotiable as far as residential lots go. Change a community lot to residential, and a mailbox and an outdoor trash can are placed automatically. Outdoor trashcans cannot be bought anywhere - can they? I have never found them.

So now what? Where will I empty my trash compactor or my kitchen garbage can when they get full?

I experimented with the newspaper. I tried to throw it overboard. No luck. I went into buydebug and placed one of those blue community trash cans on my boat, but my character just stomped her foot when I directed her to recycle the newspaper.

So I went into Edit Town and went into buy-build for the next-door-neighbor's houseboat, the Aquaholic at Port Prosperous. It has something called a "houseboat trashcan" on the front porch. I went to Buy Mode > Sort by Room > Kitchen > Disposal. Not there. I went to Buy Mode > Collections > Island Paradise. Not there either, as far as I can tell. I tried Buy > Sort by Room > Outdoors > Outdoor Activities.

Okay, this was a brand new character, I hadn't invested too much time or affection in her, I quit the game without saving and started over. Come to find out, the "You're on a Boat" houseboat at Port Popular does not have an outdoor trashcan even when it's fully furnished. So in the spirit of being complete. I grabbed a copy of "You're on a Boat" from the Library and placed it at Port Plenty. It has a trashcan!

So first of all, a warning - beware of "You're on a Boat" placed at Port Popular. And secondly, anyone know where I can get the stupid trashcan??

Thanks, sorry for being long-winded,
Bobbie

I believe outside trash cans can be found under buydebug. Hopefully, that includes the houseboat trashcans.

Can you place a big recycling trash can on the houseboat?  They will take their trash to that one.

This post from Simguru Graham may soved the trash can problem.
Quote
There's no large outdoor trash can on my
houseboat, what happens to my trash?

You may have noticed that all normal homes
come with a large trash can that can't be
deleted. This trash can does not exist on
houseboats. By default, a houseboat comes
with a small trash can that you're welcome
to delete if you want to. If there is no trash
can on a houseboat, trash will continue to
pile up. Any trash thrown into any trash can
on a houseboat will be automatically deleted
- there is no need to empty trash cans on
houseboats.
You can find houseboat related faqs in this link.

My witch magically upgraded the helm on my houseboat to autopilot, but when I try to do another upgrade, I only have the option to replace the existing upgrade, not add the other two.  Does anyone else have this problem?

I edited the title of this thread so it can be used for problems other than the trash can.

My problem/question is about cars and boats.  From what I can see, it's not possible to put a parking space for a car or a mooring cleat/post on a houseboat.  So, does this mean Sims living on a houseboat have to always use the taxi on land and their houseboat on water?

@Sims96fan - I moved my Life States Dynasty crew to Isla Paradiso, and my witch has the same - upgrade one of the three at a time, not all three. I simply treat it same as replacing Unbreakable with Self-Cleaning on plumbing stuff, or Improved Graphics with Unbreakable on computers. You can have either autopilot, a faster speed, or the obnoxious foghorn. :)

@Pam - Sims living on houseboats can keep the vehicle in their personal inventory, and will use those over the taxis and taxiboats.

Thanks, Shirin.  That's what I did in Bridgeport apartments.  I had to clear enough space to place a parking lot.  I'm not sure I even have enough space to clear on the houseboat.

For the personal watercraft (speedboat, jet ski), you can click on the mooring post that are scattered along the shores of the islands - usually next to piers/ports. You'll get an option to purchase a vehicle - whatever you purchase will go straight into the selected Sim's personal inventory. The same applies to parking spaces you find in the public parking lots.
