Things I've learned so far.

Changing into a mermaid gives you an automatic level 10 in Diving skill.
The four channels for a mermaid's fins colors translate to one for most of the tail body and three for the actual fin.
Their lifespan seems to be normal.
Their scales hide under clothing.
Their needs are a dark blue.

If you change from a mermaid into a human, do you keep your skill?

I met a mermaid in Davy Jones's Locker. You need a level four diving skill to dive there. The mermaid was nice and I got pop-ups about how great her tail was or swiming. After I befriended her, she gave me the mermaid kelp. I haven't used it yet.

So, is Mermaid not a life state that you can start out with?  I just tried to make one in CAS, and the option isn't there... I know you can make a regular Sim eat magical kelp to get one.  Does that unlock it?  Just thought I'd ask.

No mermaids are not able to be made in CAS.    You can save one but I don't know if it will keep it's mermaid-ness just like a saved alien loses it's alienness.

Are there premade townie mermaids. Do they have a house or live in the water.

Yes there are some that you can meet while diving.  I showed a picture of one in the picture thread.   I'm still making the residents list so I won't know until I'm done if there are any hiding within the townies.

Do mermaids have an "outline" in the relationships panel? And does story prog create mermaids in towns along with other occults? Oh, and are there skill challenges for scuba?

Still waiting on my computer to come back, so living vicariously through you all right now the pictures are so cool!

One question is for this thread and the other is off topic and should have been on the other one.  There is not an outline and they won't randomly show in the populace I don't think and if they do it will be rare.

And thanks, I didn't think they'd get auto-created in other neighborhoods if EA/programmers didn't plan on having diving lots in the other worlds. Bummer, but there're always workarounds

About a week into the game my Sim met Alfonso Alto via an opportunity, and he was a merman. Whether he started out that way or if story progression turned him I do not know.

He is not a merman when you start with him.  I wonder if he got turned by knowing a mermaid.
