Possible to play without CD?
« on: June 18, 2013, 09:00:50 AM »
My girlfriend and I are travelling for 2 years in Australia and sometimes we get nights where we could do with some entertainment on my Mac. My only game though is The Sims 3 but because I have to pack as little as possible in my bag, I couldn't afford to bring the game CD. But now I want to play it! So what can I do to get it to work?
I'm using Mac Osx Mountain Lion running Sims 3 Version 1.0.631.00002

Also is it possible to update the game by downloading the patches directly? Our mobile internet connection is dodgy and keeps dropping the download meaning I have to start it over again (which isn't good because our data limit is 10GB)

Many thanks in advance.

I don't know how much use this will be to you, but I had to do a factory reset on my computer last week and lost everything  :'( I searched for my base game disc everywhere, but couldn't find it. I contacted customer support. They directed me to the Origin *program* (Not just the website, the actual program) and suggested I download the game from there (My games are all registered). I'm 3 minutes from finishing the download. They say I will NOT need the disc to play.

If that's not an option, try contacting customer support.

This link will give you options for actually contacting a person ;) I used the live chat and my adviser was very friendly and helpful. Best of luck!

If you install the game from Origin you don't need the cd but you would need internet connection.

If you are comfortable with adding mods and/or cc to your game, there is Nraas NoCD. Which basically does as it says. There is also a post here, with instructions on how to use it, and how to by-pass the launcher on mac.

If you have never installed CC or Mods on your game before, I found a video with visual directions on setting up your game to run mods, or you can follow these written instructions taken from that video:
Quote from: Youtube Video
Open Finder and click on applications, choose "The Sims 3" and right click, (or control click for a one-button mouse) and select "Open Enclosing Folder", right click again and select "show package contents" click on contents> resources> transgaming> c_drive> program files> Electronic Arts> The Sims 3>, click on "New Folder" and create one called Mods, create another folder inside called Packages. Inside there, you will store your mods. Only  .package files! Nothing else.

To get the game to see/use the files, you will need a resource.cfg file. There is a link to one in the description of the video, but to make it easier: here, and maybe here if you don't trust that one.
You will need Keka to extract the file, if you do not already have it or another extraction program.

As for downloading the patches directly, I found you a link to a super-patcher for mac, and instructions to do so after further reading. I hope this helps, and sorry for the slow reply!

If your don't mind using a mod, there are some that will let you run without the CD. twallan has one on his site here.

I can't never get the game to update from the launcher so I download the patch from Crinrict's and update that way.
