Consignment a skill?
« on: July 31, 2010, 08:10:27 AM »
In the skill journal there is apparently a new skill. Title says it all. It is sort of like the collecting skill as there is no lifetime wish for the skill and you can't really level it up but there are however challenges associated with it.

You say apparently there is a new skill, does mean you haven't actually seen it yourself but just heard about it? I just checked and none of my sims have this so called skill and one is very experienced in selling through the consignment store. If you have experienced it yourself, what are the details of the sim with this skill?

Yeah, it's not a skill per se. Whoever actually does the consignment store selling in your Sim household will start accumulating the data necessary for that price tag icon to appear. Here's the interesting thing I was telling Carl yesterday because he's wrapping up a big consignment store article for the Guide — do any/all of those challenges have any bearing on future profits from the store? I think they do, but I just don't know to what degree. I'm quite certain that it's when you finally achieve the "Excellent" reputation (the first listed challenge) — that's when the store takes no cut at all from a sale and you keep everything.

Yeah I knew it wasn't a skill. I in fact said that it was not a skill before hand, saying that collecting isn't either but it's fun regardless.

Why would a store do that?

Maybe they owe your sim some money for taking it from you? I don't know!

Store should owe you money.  I don't like those negative moodlets you get when your sim has been "ripped off", so yes, I would say they owe our sims money.  :)

Because of your sim's great reputation, it brings in a lot more business for the store.

I moved this thread to Ambitions stuff....

Yeah but I have never seen other sims consign stuff...

Yeah, that's interesting isn't it? On the one hand you've got townies going in and out of the restaurants. But, with the consignment store it's different. It's open and you have to make a transaction, so if your Sim showed up and another townie was already making a transaction, who knows if that's even possible from a coding standpoint. The developers might have wanted it that way, but threw their arms up and said, "forget it, too tough." And it's not like the consignment shop needs more things that can go wrong.  ::)

One of my sims bought a painting by Geoffrey Landgrab, so he must have consigned it, right?  (he wasn't a very good painter  :D)

I guess the game just generates random pictures with random sims having made it. I don't think Sir Landgraab did really consign the painting. If he did, I would be surprised.

I'm working consigning a portion of the nectar my current Sim is making, just to see if my Sim sees any benefits from consigning a large number of items over a period of time. He's been selling at least 3 bottles of nectar and / or fruit/veggies a day ... the game doesn't report everything that was sold at 5:00 when the consignment store closes its books, just the "top three sellers." Short of checking daily (and keeping a list), it seems the most valuable / expensive stuff moves before the less-expensive things, but I've yet to have anything NOT sell.

I suspect consigning is a "hidden" or "secret" Skill (a lot like Dancing was in the Sims2 ... you got better at it over time, but you couldn't tell exactly how good the Sim the was except by watching him or her dance, or in this case, if profits go up significantly the more you sell stuff).

I don't think I've yet "testingcheatsenabled" in-game yet during play (I've tried a few times to fix a broken Sim or messed up save / town), but it's possible the value is there somewhere. Dunno. <shrug>

Traffic at the store is a bit strange ... it seems it opens around noon, and my Sim performs a song or two there every time he goes over (just to crank my "Number of Songs Performed" Value!). Sometimes it's very busy (at least for me), but most of the time it's deserted.

Like a lot of "real" consignment stores.   :)

And I've never seen another Sim attempting to interact with the shop owner, but then in the Sims3 I've never seen game-controlled Sims ever hit a register (unlike, for instance, in Open For Business in the Sims2).

I guess the game just generates random pictures with random sims having made it. I don't fing Sir Landgraab did really consign the painting. If he did, I would be surprised.

Illuminator, I'm sure that's what the game's doing, just populating the shop with random what-not with miscellaneous "created by" tags .... but one of the things I've always found fun in the Sims was to make up mental stories of WHY something I see happen in the game happened ... obviously Sir Landgraab's doing market research about the consignment store, wondering if him or his clan should buy the shop up! hehe  :D

Not in my present game (the da Vinci challenge).  My sim in charge of sales has just hit "excellent" reputation and the store took their usual commission, which I think was about 5%.
