Help with cleaning up game please.
« on: June 14, 2013, 09:14:33 AM »
I asked for help as my game was very slow, and was pointed in the direction of the Technical Help which reading has blown my mind lol.

I've followed some of the step by steps and I'd just like to check a few things before I go deleting anything, if that's ok. I'm a complete technophobe so anything other than switching it on scares the life out of me.
K
Ok so firstly I checked my RAM it says Memory 4096MB RAM - Is that a lot/enough?

Also it said to do the following to clean out your files:-
1. go into your sims game folder. not the my documents folder but the actual game folder. Find a file called sims3.ini (path is The path is C:/Program Files (x86)/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Game/Bin.)

*When I follow this path I get to the Sims 3 bit and listed are all the expansion packs I have. When I go into each 1/game/bin I get the following
-These have MemoryUsageLimit = 20000000
   - Ambitions, Fast Lane & LateNight

-The others don't have Sims3.ini
   - Generations, Master Suite, Diesel Stuff, Seasons, Town Life

Then it said to change the MemoryUsageLimit to = 40000000 to help performance this related to the amount of RAM do I need to do anything with this?

Then I followed instructions found from a link by samoht04 under Performance Issues

So I've got to the file DCBackup and it has got a lot of files all named 0x (followed by a lot of numbers & letters) am I to select all of these and delete them all leaving just the ccmerged.package file in the DCBackup folder?

Is it ok to delete the following too?  compositorCache file, CASPartCache, scriptCache, and simCompositorCache file

Sorry this is a lot of information I  hope it all makes sense to someone technical. Many thanks in Advance.

Pam if you see this thank you for pointing in the direction of the Technical help.

This value alone don't tell us much. It's probably enough but it will vary if you are using Mac OS or diferent versions of Windows.

Then it said to change the MemoryUsageLimit to = 40000000 to help performance this related to the amount of RAM do I need to do anything with this?

This only help to few users. Other users experience marginal increase (less than 5%) and other users don't really notice any change in performance. Anyways, it will not harm your system, so if it works for you go ahead.

Yes, delete all inside any folder with a name with the word "Cache" on it. It may help or not, but will not harm your system.

The file ccmerged.package is where the game stores all your premium items so if you don't want to redownload and reinstall all your premium items, better leave it alone and don't delete it.

I just went through a major clean up on my PC (In anticipation of Island Paradise and all the great new stuff that will be available).  Over the years, the suggestions below are the ones I use when cleaning up my files and have had no problems at all.   Hope they help you.

FIRST and foremost:  Put a copy of your Game folder located in documents on your desktop or anywhere else you want to save.  If something goes wrong you can always restore your originals.
Tip:  I store all data on an external hard drive which keeps my drive on the PC free.
Tip:  This tool is no longer supported but I have been using TSRMerlin for a few years.  When this is installed package files will show with a Merlin icon and you have the ability to click on a package file and see a thumbnail of the object or lot.
Tip:  Not sure what the folders are?  See Folders Explained at Sims Wiki.

•   Delete Cache files:  Do this first.  I suggest using Delphy’s Dashboard.
•   Uninstall unwanted installed items using the Launcher.
•   Delete lots downloaded that you are no longer using but remember CC that came with the lots will more than likely be deleted (not always though). If you previously saved these downloaded lots you can always reinstall if you find you cannot live without something.
•   Go through your Mod’s folder.  I do this sorting by size and then determine what I really need.  Some of the CC package files are quite large.
•   Use Delphy’s Dashboard to scan for duplicates and conflicts.  Be careful however; you do not want to delete a .dcb or .ecb line as it will remove everything in the
        .dcb/.ecb package.
•   Delete DCBackup files BUT leave the comerged file in tact in the folder.  New back up files are created every time you install new downloads.
•   Delete the Featured Items folder.  This folder gets huge and is recreated every time you restart your game or work within Launcher.  Will load thousands of images
        before you know it.
Generally I block the internet before I play so these files do not stream in from the Store.  The folder is also known to cause other problems with the game.
•   Remove files you have installed in the Launcher from Downloads and put them where ever you store your downloaded items.
•   Game Saves:  Remove and store games you are not playing and also remove and store the back up’s of current games.
•   Go through your Saved Sims folder and delete the ones you are no longer using.  Or, you can uninstall via Launcher if you can find them there.
•   If you installed worlds and are not using them, uninstall.
•   Keep only the EP’s and SP’s you really want.  I uninstalled all my SP’s and currently only running EP’s through Showtime (cannot wait for Island Paradise!).
Keep in mind though, if you have CC that requires any of these EP’s or SP’s the CC will not show up in your game.
•   If there are objects in your game that you want to install but cannot find them in Launcher put the file back in the download folder and Launcher will indicate it is
installed and you can uninstall from that.

I would just like to point out. You do not need to download a program to delete your cache files.   This can be done by hand and the files are: scriptCache.package, compositorCache.package, CASPartCache.package, and simCompositorCache.package as you mentioned above.  The social Cache file is all the information regarding your badges, showtime sticker/stamp information so if you delete that you'll have to earn them all back.

Don't forget simple solutions as well that don't require external programs.

brappl, thank you so much for all that information. I will have a read though it and will follow your instructions. I'm quite new to all of this and a bit of a techno phobe, also I'm playing on a laptop will that make any difference to any of your steps?

Can you tell me where to find my Game folder and when I find it am I just saving it to desktop (click & drag)?

No External Hard drive.
So is TSRMerlin no longer available & what is it actually?

What is Delphy's Dashboard? And where are my cache files please?
What do you mean unwanted items? Downloads with CC? How do I uninstall?

I only have one MOD - Overwatch, do I need to do anything with this?

I have downloaded a few things from the exchange, is there a way to check good content & corrupted content? How do I go through & delete these? Is there a way to look at each item downloaded?

Where are the DCback up files located?

- Remove and store games you are not playing and also remove and store the back up’s of current games. How do I do this?

- Go through your Saved Sims folder and delete the ones you are no longer using.  Or, you can uninstall via Launcher if you can find them there.
Is this in the game mode when you go to edit town and delete them?

How do I uninstall worlds that I am not using?

- Keep only the EP’s and SP’s you really want.  I uninstalled all my SP’s and currently only running EP’s through Showtime (cannot wait for Island Paradise!).
Keep in mind though, if you have CC that requires any of these EP’s or SP’s the CC will not show up in your game.
What are EPs & SPs?

- If there are objects in your game that you want to install but cannot find them in Launcher put the file back in the download folder and Launcher will indicate it is installed and you can uninstall from that.
How do I do this? Again is there a file with a list of downloaded content that I can go through and delete what I no longer want etc?

I'm sorry for all the questions, but as I said I am a newbie/technophone. I know how to switch these things on but then after that it's all foreign to me. A bit like driving a car, I can do that, but technical stuff - not a clue.

I've pre ordered my copy of Paradise Island too, so excited. I've even worked out that it should be due to arrive on the Friday so have kept that weekend free to play with it. So sad lol

Many thanks again for all your help.
Kind regards

Where do I find the scriptCache.package, compositorCache.package, CASPartCache.package, and simCompositorCache.package ? I'm sure I've done it before but I can't remember the path to fiind them.

MAny thanks again.

Gingerkid, I am going to be sending you a response to the questions you added to my post shortly but please also look to the fact that your game might be going slowly because your laptop needs to be cleaned up.  If you have a lot of programs running in the background when you are playing, this will slow you down. If you have a lot of Ad Ware, Spy Ware etc., that will cause problems.   Run a defrag and clean the registry if you haven't done that recently.  Get rid of unused programs and applications you do no longer need or use.  This is a whole different topic for another forum but you might want to consider looking into doing this also.  I’ll be back to you shortly.

Hello Gingerkid, I put my answers at the end of your questions:

Can you tell me where to find my Game folder and when I find it am I just saving it to desktop (click & drag)?  Game Folder in your Documents or My Documents Folder inside Electronic Arts.  Use copy and paste.  Dragging will remove from the game file.  I think if you open up this folder and look at the sub folders and files, the information below will become clearer.  Everything you are reviewing and/or cleaning is located within these folders.

No External Hard drive.  You don’t need one.  You can store where ever you like.  Before I got the external I backed up on discs.

So is TSRMerlin no longer available & what is it actually?  It’s a file manager and installer.  Best to leave that program aside for now.  I have the .msi file but believe it should not be sent via the forum and it’s not really a necessity.  Might just cause you future agony until you get better acquainted with your files.

What is Delphy's Dashboard? And where are my cache files please?  As Ricalynn pointed out (and thank you Ricalynn)  you do not need to download programs to accomplish clean up.  These have been so much a part of my clean up ritual I naturally shared them.  If you would like more detail and the free download it is located at ModTheSims3.  The main files cleared are scriptCache.package, compositorCache.package, CASPartCache.package, and simCompositorCache.package as Ricalynn mentioned but there are several other Cache files that can be cleaned (NOT the social cache)  You can choose which to clear.  I clear them all except Social cache and that is not included in Delphy’s  for clearing.  There is also a post on this site that provides an excellent overview with illustrations on Delphys Dashboard.  It is in Game Modifications – Tips for keeping your mods organized and avoiding conflicts.  Posted January 13, 2013 by NonaMena.

What do you mean unwanted items? Downloads with CC? How do I uninstall?  Yes, any CC you installed.  You can uninstall via the launcher.

I only have one MOD - Overwatch, do I need to do anything with this?  Twallan is amending the code so it will work with Island Paradise.  You will need to update your MOD.

I have downloaded a few things from the exchange, is there a way to check good content & corrupted content? How do I go through & delete these? Is there a way to look at each item downloaded?  Again, my rule of thumb for my personal process has been Delphy’s Dashboard.  It is worth looking into.  There are package editors available at MTS3 but I only use Merlin as all I want to see are the thumbnails of the packages.  Thumbnails also show up right in the Launcher if you still have the files you downloaded in the downloads folder.

Where are the DCback up files located?  In your game files folder.

- Remove and store games you are not playing and also remove and store the back up’s of current games. How do I do this?  Cut and paste them to a separate folder out of your game folder.  Store them on your desktop or where ever you choose.  Just not in the Electronic Arts/The Sims folders

- Go through your Saved Sims folder and delete the ones you are no longer using.  Or, you can uninstall via Launcher if you can find them there.
Is this in the game mode when you go to edit town and delete them?  No.  That will only delete them from CAS. .  You can uninstall lots and Sims you downloaded and installed via the Launcher.  You cannot uninstall Sims or lots/housing  that came with the game.

How do I uninstall worlds that I am not using?  You can only uninstall worlds you downloaded and installed.  Again, use the launcher.

What are EPs & SPs   Expansion Packs and Stuff Packs.

- If there are objects in your game that you want to install but cannot find them in Launcher put the file back in the download folder and Launcher will indicate it is installed and you can uninstall from that.
How do I do this? Again is there a file with a list of downloaded content that I can go through and delete what I no longer want etc?  Only if you kept a copy of your downloaded items.  Look in your down load folder located in your game files as identified above.

I’m afraid this post is getting a bit too long … may I suggest you go through the information and after trying what you can, send a new post with what you are stuck on.  Good luck and hope this has been helpful.
