Covered Porches & Pillars?
« on: June 12, 2013, 07:26:11 PM »
Hey all,

I've just recently gotten into building my own houses a little bit on TS3 (the console version) and am dying to figure out covered porches. I've mastered the wraparound porch, but not the covered wraparound.

I suppose my question is, how does one go about manually covering a porch, and, is there any way to work pillars into it?

Thanks!

It depends on the look you want.  First of all you pretty much have to use pillars/posts on the porch below where you want a roof.  Once in go up to the second story level and put down a floor on the squares the posts give you.  Then you can either use that as a deck/upper level porch or you can add a roof to it.  If it's not too big, you can take the pillars out but it looks better if there is some support for what is up above.

In this picture I have a small porch below.  I put in the posts then built a floor above and wound up with a nice porch off the upstairs bedroom.

This shows the lower level with the very small porch.  You can see the placement of the posts that gave me the ability to make the upper level porch.

Here you can see a long wrap around porch with a second one above.

Does this help?

There's a column I like to use that's actually called "Front Porch Column". Normally it has to be placed just inside the railing but if you have the moveObjects cheat turned on it can be placed right in the railing which looks much better in my opinion.

As far as covering said porch I think the easiest way is just to consider the porch part of the house you are roofing and roof the whole thing at once, porch and all. The columns will provide the necessary support for that provided there are enough of them and if there aren't just add more. You can always delete the extra columns after the roof is in place.

But like Joria pointed out it depends largely on the look you're going for.
Here's an example of one of my builds where the covered porch wraps all the way around the house. Shingle Style Victorian 40x40 residential lot

Here's my tip.  As you're building your house/structure, put up all the walls like you would.  This is all BEFORE doing the roofs.  Now, where you want the covered porches, also enclose those with walls.  Your house should now be all walled in.  Now, place your roofs (since it's all walled in, it's much easier).  After you're happy with your roofs, simply delete the walls where you'll place all the railings.  Then put up the fencing you'll be using for the railing and then using the MoveObjects on cheat, place the columns on the fencing.  Presto, a covered porch.  This method ensures you don't have to place extra columns just to get the upper floor tiles on.

Edit:  One more thing.  After you've put up the fences, place your stairs if you've built on a foundation.  Then place your columns.
