May the Ashen reign! I've actually made one or two by coincidence. One of them is Keira Jane. And also, #TeamLuther.

Chapter 18: Change

So time marched on in Aurora Skies. And as time does, it heals old wounds and softens change.

Oswin and Chin reconciled, and as Chin came to terms with his new form, his temper began to subside.

Leo, taking his new role to heart, grew into a handsome and formidable teenager, ready to take on the world and all the challenges that came with being his mother's heir.

And Oblique grew into an imaginative child with so much of his mother's Goodness it was practically worn on his chest like a badge.

His kind innocence was not so pleasing to all, however, and as soon as Oblique was old enough, his Aunt set a plan into motion. She did need to call in a few favors, but she would certainly not be stopped once her mind was made up. She was much like her mother that way.

"Jackie, dear. You are really so helpful. I couldn't have managed the task without you and your lack of a solid form. Walls and locked doors are certainly tricky for the living."

"Oh, Ms. Morgan... Ms. Knight? Ms..."

"Please, just call me Your Highness."

"It was my pleasure, Your Highness," Jackie said gently.

"I'll be in touch."

"Have a problem? There's really not much that can't be fix with a touch of magic."

It was later that evening that Solanine found Oblique in the hall sitting area. "I made a promise to you years ago, Obbie. And today I intend to keep it."

"What did you promise me, Auntie?"

"That I would help you find your place in this world. You don't let anyone tell  you that you're a spare."

"Who would say that?"

"No one again."

"What's that?" He asked with sudden concern, taking a step back.

The glass shattered at his feet, and as the purple smoke rose around his ankles, the Oblique Daye that had stood there mere moments before was no more.

"It's "Goth" now," the boy told his "Uncle" Luther when he returned home from work.

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Kid. You can't just call yourself Goth whenever you feel like it. At most, you're a Knight, and only at heart. But we can condition your mind to operate a little more efficiently as well."

Oblique smirked lightly as Luther took him upstairs to sharpen his mind. No Knight at heart was going to be as dull as Oswin was aiming to let Oblique grow up to be.

"Leo," Oblique said. "You're a star. A real winner, you know that? You're set to be King of this place, and you know, I totally support that. 100%. But there's one thing mom didn't tell you."

Leo frowned lightly, listening to his younger brother. "What is it? How do you know?"

"I heard her talking to dad. She said you can't take control unless you get a girl."

"Get a girl?"

"Yeah, yeah. You know. You need a Queen. How are you supposed to be King without a Queen? It's a real head-scratcher though."

Leo was just getting more and more confused. "It is? What is? How is it a head-scratcher."

"I mean, not to be rude or anything, but it's just that, at school and stuff, I think the good girls are all taken. So you might have to look else where."

"Like where?"

"You know, I think... no, I probably shouldn't say."

"No, come on, Obbie. You have to tell me."

"It's just that, there are a lot of great Ashen girls at West Hall. I hear they're kind of awesome. Not boring like the girls at our school."

"Oh,  you mean at Delilah's school?" Leo asked him.

"Yeah, you should head over there after school one day and see what's going on," the younger brother suggested.

"Yeah, I guess," he said, but  he had already had his eyes on someone else.

Meanwhile, Delilah was still hard at work, trying to hone her skills.

And it just wasn't getting any easier.

"Father. I don't understand why I'm not getting any better," Delilah said with a sigh, her heart heavy with her failures.

"Don't you worry, my love. I'm working on it."

Hahha, the Ashen are sneaking into all of the games, slowly. One accident at a time.

Ooooh, so many twists and turns in this one! It certainly was worth waiting for...Hm. Wonder what cutie pie Obbie became? Besides a Goth, lol. I really like Solanine's new act; much more gothy than before! She's truly behaving like the daughter of Grim. Oh, look. I sound like an evil coach or something.

Also, Delilah has me stumped. I'm anxious to find out what is going on with her.

Great update, Hearts!

Great update!  I noticed that most of our shots of Oblique (post-potion) are from the back or side so that we can't see his eyes.  I'm curious if that was mere coincidence or if you changed his eyes to reflect his new, evil nature.  Goth indeed  :=)

AWESOME CHAPTER!!!!!!!
I bet that Solanine threw  personality changer thingy at Obbie. (Can't remember the correct name for the thingies and I'm too lazy to look it up real quick.)  I'm very supportive of that. Also, I'm wondering/slightly worried about Leo going to the Ashen school for some reason. Mainly because I think that someone will eat him or something.

Thanks, Dolls! The next update (coming soon) will explain a little bit more about what's going on with Delilah. Not too much, but it's setting it up pretty heavily.

I didn't even notice I'd done that! But you know, I do know a good idea when I hear one. ;)

Thank you, Dexie! And you're spot on. Which means your concern about the school being dangerous is probably pretty well-founded. Since the old Oblique would never willing send his older brother into danger, this new one might not be too opposed to it.

Huh. Me being worried about the crown prince being eaten alive by teenage girls is because a heart throb came to their school is right. ;D
It's that or Delilah has a weird magic spaz that (almost) kills Leo. And then if he doesn't die, they fall in love for reasons unknown.... (AKA Love Charm.)
At least, that's how I would write it. (And seeing how I've guessed major plot twists in a few stories before by asking that question, I'm having high hopes for this.)

Chapter 19: Hidden

It turned out that Oswin was becoming something of a local celebrity in Aurora Skies. Her name had hit papers and news reports, and it was becoming clear to many that this was truly the missing Daye girl from all those years ago.

Oswin was reaching such heights of this fame that she couldn't even tend to her garden without being swarmed by reporters and photographers.

"We're dying to get the scoop, Oswin. Please, tell us about what you're up to. I've heard you have children. Are you planning to take your throne back and piece together this kingdom?"

"Yes, I plan to do that. I know it will be a lot of work, but my family and I are willing to take it on. A Daye will be back in power soon, and we hope to bring peace back to our home."

However, not all the attention was good attention. Delilah's frustration with her abilities had taken another outlet. She was constantly causing trouble within the town, pulling pranks at the East Hall school, lighting things on fire, and getting into fights. It wasn't unheard of that she would find her way home thanks to the helpful hand of a police officer.

Oswin had spoken with her subordinate officers and made them promise not to file charges against Delilah. Just to bring her home, safely, without any marks on her record. They agreed, but also said that they couldn't do that forever.

But Oswin wasn't the only Daye who had a soft spot for Delilah.

"Hey, Dee. What are you up to?" Leo asked her, trying to sound casual.

"Painting. Isn't that obvious?" She didn't look away from the canvas.

"Yeah, well, of course. I just mean, you know, what kind of thing are you painting?"

"Can't you tell?"

"Yeah, sure. It's a tree."

"No. It's a criticism of the rampant state of decay that is our current society."

"Oh, right. Of course. I see it now."

Unfortunately for Leo, his wooing skills weren't quite up to par. But Niro Pagan was an entirely different story.

They went to school together, and Niro understood where she came from. And most importantly, her father approved.

"I hear your parents are pretty big in the Underground community, Kid."

"Oh, yeah. They'd love to meet you. You should come to the next party. It's on saturday."

"Oh, I'll be there."

Luther had never seen so many Ashen in one place before. It was fantastic. There, he met Talia Algo, the premier member of Aurora Skies' Ashen circuit.

She was incredibly sharp and incredibly powerful, both politically and magically. Naturally, Luther spent much of his time at the party speaking with her. He knew very well the usefulness of powerful allies.

"Perhaps we could go somewhere a bit more private to discuss matters," Luther suggested, his hand to her arm.

"I wouldn't be opposed," Talia replied.

"So, uh, making dinner. Need any help?" Leo asked.

"Well, I'm using a food processor, so unless you think I need help pressing the buttons, I'm pretty much good."

"Oh, I could do a side or something."

"Why don't you clean up those dishes," she said, nodding to the pile of dirty dishes in the corner. "They're starting to stink."

"Oh, uh, sure. I can do that," he said, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Delilah," Luther called from outside the kitchen window. "Come here for a moment."

"Well, I guess you can finish dinner up for me," she said to Leo before heading out the back door.

"Dee, this is Talia Algo, leader of the Aurora Skies Ashen," Luther said, introducing Delilah to his new friend.

"And she's going to fix that magic problem of yours."

I like the look of Luther's new lady friend. Let's see if she's brave enough to deal with Mr. Knight!

Poor Leo. It never ends well for those types... :(

And the ashen uprising will soon absorb little Leo and Delilah will take her rightful place as queen...assuming her uncontrollable magic doesn't turn out to be more than ashen lady thought it would be...
